    From my perspective as a composer, the extra range it provides is the big one for me. More range = more possibilities.

    I just changed my Uke to Low-G ... It sound so lively and nice. I can play more notes. Yet as the new string is so smooth and soft, I can move between segment easily.

    I've been playing the tenor uke for about 10 years. Always low G, or what's called linear tuning. (Guitar finger picker since the late 60s.) The transition was very easy. I like 'bass" on my thumb, as I finger pick my uke too. I think re-entrant strings, or high G, is great for strumming chords. I always thought the wound low G had a different tone. I'm looking forward to trying a plain G low G set, based on this video. Thanx!

    That was some BOSS playing!! I went to an unwound having only had wound. There is a sound difference. Deeper tone and it seems to be greater sustain in the unwound. I have a few Ukuleles and enjoy the different sound from each one.

    I just got my tenor low G out again after not playing it for a while and I forgot how much I love it! I can't put it down now! It's an unwound string, actually a classical guitar string. (It works!) I'm playing a Kala ebony ukulele.

    I have a tenor with a high G for the occasional times I prefer it, but my absolute go to is on my KTM-25 and KTM-00 with the unwound low G for the richer tones and more versatile play.

    The extra range is a huge advantage. Another huge advantage is a low-G ukulele can be played to sound similar to a high-G instrument by playing on the C, E, and A string. A high-G ukulele cannot be played to sound similar to a low-g ukulele.

    Hi Terry, Yes, yes. Low G is great, but so is high g. It is not one or the other it is both. Thanks for all those awesome examples. Your 5 reasons were great, however I was disappointed that you didn't mention the differences between wound an unwound. I would also prefer less 'fluff' and 'hype' talk and more useful technique and theory instruction. Just my preference/opinion. Thanks Terry - Outstanding playing - much appreciated.

    I’m a premium member for over 2 years. You convinced me to switch to wound low G on my Kala tenor over a year ago and I haven’t looked back. I don’t know if the unwound LG will fit on my nut without modifications. I really liked your Spanish finger style with the LG. Keep up the energy Terry.

    For those who were wondering (like me) why you repeatedly emphasize "unwound, not wound."
    There is a video from 3 yrs ago. th-cam.com/video/R5Nwf0g3w74/w-d-xo.html
    If you jump to the 5:59 mark, the summary was that wound is a bit brighter, unwound is a bit softer.
    I'm still not clear on why any of the five magical reasons (which definitely are cool, btw) hinge on playing w/ an unwound low G.
    It's been a year, people are still wondering, is there something else about wound low G that we should be worried about?

    It all comes down to extended range. Unwound low G doesn’t work, IMO, on a concert size, though, where a wound one is okay. I like a low G better on a tenor, though.

    • @stanleysokolow
      @stanleysokolow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put an Aquila Red Low G string on a concert and it works fine. It has about the same tension and volume as the C string.

    • @kithg
      @kithg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stanleysokolow Whichever low G I had sounded floppy and had pitch, but it didn’t ring. Put a wound one and it’s much better.

    • @stanleysokolow
      @stanleysokolow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kithg I tried a Fremont Soloist Wound Low G on my concert, but rejected it because it was too floppy. Even though the package says it is for "Soprano - Concert - Tenor", don't believe it. The Aquila Red Low G for concert sounds comparable to the C string (which is white so I think it's an Aquila nylgut variety), with similar sustain.

    • @kithg
      @kithg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stanleysokolow Interesting. I think mine is a Thomastic (sp?). I like it pretty well.

    • @stanleysokolow
      @stanleysokolow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kithg I guess it comes down to finding the string you like. Personally, I don't like the squeaks of wound strings. On my solid-body electromagnetic-pickup tenor ukes, I chose flat-wound or polished (half-flat) steel strings to avoid the squeaks.

  • @TPITEOTG

    “High G” was just “workaround” for small size instruments not resonating well to low G. Including Koaloha from this video LOL ;) frankly, I am not impressed with sound quality of “power chords”. Take guitar for power chords. Or play duet.
