well it isnt caustic, and it isnt toxic, and it isnt lethal, at least not any more than any other item we are exposed to every day. i suggest you read the data sheets for acetone.
You'll notice the acetone simply softens the foam so that it collapses into something like chewed bubblegum. Try putting it into lacquer thinner instead, and you'll truly liquefy the foam into a clear liquid that can be used to coat porous materials to waterproof them. I call it "Styro-Kote", but I doubt that I'm the original inventor.
Terry Sheehan Nothing to stop someone from trademarking it the idea. Otherwise just spread the word and the context as far and wide as you can to make the term generic.

since the people in this comment section are experts pls help i have in my freezer a ceramic dish with 1M HCl, acetone, h2o2. do i do something with it? i did research as much as i can but i just couldnt fucking find anything about how to make this stuff.
For anyone wanting to do this Gasoline does the same thing but a tip is to add the liquid to the Styrofoam that way you can control how thick it is. Just add a little bit of acetone/gasoline at a time and let it dissolve and once it quits eating add a little more and so on.
I have just purchased a field with an old fridge lorry back in it. The styofoam out of it is 30ft long over a foot thick and five foot wide will try to melt it into smaller bits to take down the tip.
I was just thinking the same thing. All I can think of when seeing this was the napalm bombing in Vietnam by USA and how it would look like if it was to get it on your skin. All she would need to add is gasoline and then a fire. Cool video though.
You should also inform that you should wear face mask, because I work with acetone alot and the vapors you have created with this combination and really cause some damage. Cheers.
Acetone exposure on a once-off basis like this is very unlikely to cause any damage, it is always best to take precautions even with this very low risk but I think its worth being aware the risk is low. There are few chemicals you can buy over the counter that are seriously dangerous from short term exposure. Working with the stuff is a different story of course and every precaution must be taken.
Really. Read the back label of acetone. Better, read the label on styrine. Read the caution label on gel coat. Its all dangerous even with low exposure.
+Juelz J And polymer thickened gasoline is JUST THAT! Seriously, Thickened gasoline is basically napalm. There are two different types of many variations of napalm, theres WW2 and Korean war era type A and then there's Vietnam type B, Polymer mixed into gasoline is similar to type B napalm, but not evenly processed, so it's thicker, and stickier, but not as much as gel-type Vietnam napalm, same effect and similar composition so it might as well be napalm.
Anon archist Burns releasing heat over 3000 degrees Celsius, sticks to pretty much everything it touches and can burn for hours on end if a lump of it is large enough. That's type B Napalm... or as i like to call it 'Nampalm.
regular paint thinner works well to dissolve Styrofoam and it turns the Styrofoam into a clear plastic resin which works well for pouring into cracked concrete flooring, or to coat plywood with as a sealer like fiberglass resin, and you can use it just like fiberglass resin as well, it can be poured into a mold to make your own RC car or truck bodies and when dry it can be painted, it dries clear.
in the late 60s when i used to do a lot of competition model making i used this idea and also melted sprue from kits in to acetone or liquid polystyrene cement this made the paste you have made however you had to keep liquid in the bottle and air out it was a great filler for models also great for coating rough areas and easy to sand down..
if you use gasoline/petrol you have a cheap napalm i just made some today its real easy look up my vid on it i burned a little bit of it and it burns fairly well
Petrol will leave an oily residue in the mixture, which isn't a problem if you are going to burn it, but will be a problem if you try to use it for something else.
I used to use different liquids on polystyrene when making brick or stone walls for movie and theatre sets. Petrol, diesel, paint thinner and acetone produce different surfaces from their different volatility and using a large paint brush to flick the fluid onto the surface works well. Hexane safe contact adhesive can be used to glue poly bricks together.
Much more fun to melt it in gasoline, then use it as a type of sticky napalm. It will stick to anything and is hard to put out. Even dumping water on it wont do the trick.
Thinners and styrophome is what I've been using for a couple of years now!! I use it to waterproof my paper machee projects, I love the stuff, (But word of warning, it's highly flammable ) The acetone mix will be better as a glue, i think!! 🧚♀️🩷
I saw a video where a guy was building prosthetic legs in a 3rd world country. To save money he started using plastic yogurt and milk cartons as the resin (melting them with lacquer thinner) and polyester as the reinforcement cloth.Using a wooden foot with tire tread on the bottom. Dropping the cost from thousands to a few dollars. Local people make them now that they know how.
I too have experimented with this: There's another solvent - I don't know what it's called in english, though in danish it's called 'cellulose thinner' - that'll dissolve styrofoam too, but the result is much more liquid (less viscous) than with acetone. - And it will dry up as transparent hard plastic, as the solvent evaporates.. (So will the acetone jelly too, but it takes longer because the partially dried surface forms kindofa 'shell' that to some extent seal it and slow down evaporation).. The less viscous, 'cellulose thinner' based solution can to some extent be used to make a thin plastic coating on stuff, but may tend to peal off in flakes, if the layer is too thin.
Use more acetone, it stays wet long enough for the air bubbles to escape. You wind up with clear polystyrene. You can mould it, and you can dip things in it.
Yeah I keep tripping over the can so was wanting to just use the rest up and throw it away. I got a lot of other paint cans I should prolly throw away too. They are just sitting in the opening of my shed and makes it tricky to walk without hitting one.
SadamFlu oh you mean like a drug? lol acetone doesnt do much to you. when i was cleaning the paint off the toaster with acetone i had like 3/4 of the can evaporated into the air in my bathroom. i felt light headed and weird, but it didnt feel enjoyable.
yeah thats what I was meaning, hehe. I think you can get high on it, not sure though. We used to melt polystyrene with petrol, then stick it on a big soup spoon, light it on fire and then throw it onto brick walls and shit. hehe. Have fun Rinoa.
+jake mcintyre you dont know how you can trip on something? acetone cans are one of those things that are always laying on the floor in the shed so i always end up accidentally kicking it on the way out of the shed.
Acetone splashing like you were doing is a great way to make foam look like stone if you water it down a bit. Acetone + styrene is also great replacement for bondo. Once it hardens up due to the lack of air pockets in the styrene it's very hard and great for putting together plastic armor (if you are careful anyway).
+Benjamin King Excellent reply...but yeah people with acrylic nails soak their fingers in pure acetone.....a woman I worked with once shut her hand in the door, the false nail smashed into her nailbed and to get it off she had to soak the wounded finger in acetone!
You guys are missing the point, it's not the acetone that bothers me, it's the melted styrofoam. Styrofoam is extremely carcinogenic when it starts to melt.
I watched this years ago and wow your voice has changed it messes with my head and im sure it messes with yours even more sorry if i didnt word this very well
+Lauren J. I doubt it.. think of the lost wax casting by the Egyptians millennias ago. that sh!ts dense.. best tip for a smooth finish is to dip the shape to be casted in plaster, let it drip dry, forms a smooth tough skin like drywall.. alum will be smooth as silk when set..
When we were kids, we used to melt polystyrene with petrol, turning it into a kind of flammable putty. This could be moulded into a golf ball sized blob, and projected using a pug stick, after igniting it. We thought the sound it made as it flew through the air was what an asteroid or meteorite would make.
+MrSparklystuff Jesus Christ dude! I don't think I've ever seen that joke on a non food related video. Like if he was dissolving food into acetone, then it would be unoriginal. But I thought it was funny. And you're really telling someone to kill themselves over it? Wow, maybe the person who encourages people to commit suicide just because they made a bad joke shouldn't be allowed to live.
Interesting. I knew acetone could dissolve it, but I never thought about using just enough to turn it into a putty. I wonder how well this would work as a cheap way to make filler for EPS foam terrain in wargaming. Thanks for the vid!
You could try melting down hdpe plastic which is what milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles and many other types of containers are made of there are many videos on youtube of how to melt hdpe and use it for machining or creating plastic ingots
Well instead of talkshitting your viewers because of what they said about your video, why don't you just apologize to your wrong part? What an unprofessional youtuber, immature!
You sure you did nothing? You are so boastful to your viewers. Just go delete your account and learn how to be a good person first. And make some friends.
KREGGA GROWTOPIA no i will not take down my channel because of a whiny idiot, i enjoy uploading videos and they make me a good amount of money. i find it funny how you seem to think you have some amount of control or say over the internet. you must be new here. i'm definitly not well-known but im known by more people here than you are, so i dont get your point. so in the end you are upset that i created something that didnt please you, yet you didnt bother to create anything yourself. just fuck off already. lol :p BTW its "shittalking" not "talkshitting", you might want to change that if your ever to be taken seriously. hahahaha
You can't make a perfect hole in a piece of styrofoam by putting a piece of pipe on the foam then pour in a small amount of acetone and just hold it and push it through as the hole dissolves. I have done this for craft projects.
Loved the video and that stuff would probably be pretty awesome for some different applications. But the acetone thing, the biggest issue with that isn't the fumes or getting high on it, its the fact that it can absorb right through the skin and cause damage to the nervous system. But something fun of you get into it is get some calcium carbide and make some acetylene with it.
I took the end solution and put it on my face so I could make a mask... After 30 mins it showed no signs of hardening.... didnt work out as I had planned.
Jarod Morris “Men and women are happier and healthier when they acknowledge and celebrate their respective gender differences.” It makes for a more enjoyable video, Knowing someones gender also gives a mental image along with sound so its more like there talking directly to you. I feel its more enjoyable when people talk to you (in theory) not at you :)
Zealous Valkyrie ColdFloe is an insult to trolls, in order to troll you have to make the other person care, and he fell flat on his face with that. maybe he'll grow up to be a troll, but thats a long way off.
:) The musical accompaniment lends well to this charming petro-jelly instructional. Fond recollections of 3:48, "the plank-of-poly plops into it's spirits like the drunken gutterpup into his bottle".
Gasoline can dissolve Styrofoam too and it is the same as rugby contact cement... Dissolved Styrofoam on acetone have many uses... Good for handyman's DIY tool...
The Acetone is safe to touch, its even great to get tar or paint of your hands. But I'm thinking about the plastic possioning from the freshly dissolved plastic. The Acetone would be helping the toxins from the plastic break through your protective layer (skin) easy. just means your balls may not work now lol
Acetone de-fats the skin and can have central nervous system effects via skin absorption. Check the Material Safety Data Sheet. Not to mention the fact that it is extremely flammable. I'd recommend finding another toy.
He doesn't realize that goo can be poured into a mold and create very hard plastic pieces. He also doesn't realize that acetone is now swimming through his veins.
I wonder why yours is more like a syrupy viscosity and mine is more like that of silly putty even though its been soaking in gasoline in a jar since I made it.
?? Um not sure if this acetone is different than nail acetone but I use that to clean off my nail polish and it just kinda melts away and also melts my styrofoam bowls but nothing rlly happens if you touch it or spill it all over you you just lose moisture so moisturize
This stuff is really handy. Ive used it in a home made injector to injection mold clone parts for old toys or to clone figures and models completely. Ive also used gasoline to do this back pre highschool so 20+ years but that was used for a different experiment entirely😅
Luv the vid. TYVM. I'm working on a water craft from 95% recycled/PURPOSED Plastic containers, PVC Pipe, & a few other things . I am going to try this as a Joint & Bevel Putty adding a bit of Fiberglass shavings. Never know till ya try. Thanks again. P.S. gr8 advice . ty

Awesome! Does using lacquer thinner cause it to totally solidify and become rigid?
I think I know how they did the dissolving floor scene in Alien.
That actually is exactly how they did it
Use painted styrofoam and drops of acetone on the painted styrofoam
I always thought it was nice how you'd add this type of calming music to your videos.
Time to make a dark joke ready to be deleted. Kids in Vietnam could have eaten that napalm.
Interesting to watch. I wonder if that stuff could be used to make a mold for resin casting. I am going to have to try that.

I have just purchased a field with an old fridge lorry back in it. The styofoam out of it is 30ft long over a foot thick and five foot wide will try to melt it into smaller bits to take down the tip.
You know you are just making a crude form of napalm.
I was just thinking the same thing. All I can think of when seeing this was the napalm bombing in Vietnam by USA and how it would look like if it was to get it on your skin. All she would need to add is gasoline and then a fire. Cool video though.
Cyborgslayer404d Yo, I think I saw you comment on a random 'ball lightning' video about an hour ago. Weird.
This isn't really napalm. If you dissolve it in petrol it would be
+duMaurier15 actually you dont need gasoline acetone is flammable by itself so yeah crude napalm
+patrick Tighe That's noting like actual napalm tho. Napalm has oxidizers and other substances to make it burn a lot hotter than some styrofoam puddy.
You should also inform that you should wear face mask, because I work with acetone alot and the vapors you have created with this combination and really cause some damage.

An Acetone label carries a '1' for 'slight' risk to health.
have. and use it everyday. whats your point.
replace the acetone with diesel fuel and you've got napalm.
+Anon archist i believe acetone makes napalm too but he waited for it to evaporate.
+Anon archist That already is what all the casuals call "napalm". Real napalm is more like a jell that sprays and sticks to everything after impact.
+Juelz J And polymer thickened gasoline is JUST THAT! Seriously, Thickened gasoline is basically napalm. Rinoa Super-Genius what to do if it harden

add more acetone

in the late 60s when i used to do a lot of competition model making i used this idea and also melted sprue from kits in to acetone or liquid polystyrene cement this made the paste you have made however you had to keep liquid in the bottle and air out it was a great filler for models also great for coating rough areas and easy to sand down..
Can use as a glue, can use petrol instead of acetone
if you use gasoline/petrol you have a cheap napalm i just made some today its real easy look up my vid on it i burned a little bit of it and it burns fairly well
found that out all by myself

Petrol will leave an oily residue in the mixture, which isn't a problem if you are going to burn it, but will be a problem if you try to use it for something else.
I don't think it's a good idea to use napalm as glue

What is puddy? I know what putty is, but not puddy.
+Eric H same thing
It's not spelled "puddy"
Eric H
words dont have to have only one spelling, and you mean that you dont spell it puddy.
Try looking up "puddy" in the dictionary. What do you get?
Eric H
sorry but a dictionary doesnt have any control over the english language, it only reports what it's writer's observe in the english language.
I'm asking because i want to use this technique to make a specific shape. And it must be pretty strong.
I'm going to give this to my mother-in-law and say it's marshmallow fluff.
Frosty Fire OMG, I laughed out loud like a lunatic!!!
Model glue can dissolve styrofoam as well although it takes longer than with acetone.
I'm I the only one while the first piece of being Dissolved thought it looked like the Titanic
You can use that for a binder for soild rocket motors.

It dries clear and is very hard. great sealer...It also works better with paint thinner.
acetone isnt that bad to touch people, just dont breathe the fumes too much.
thats why he did it outside, i guess
It allows your body to absorb many chemicals quickly. It's bad to mix chemistry with acetone on your hands
Acetone goes straight through your skin into your bloodstream.
Thank you! I was just going to mention Nail Polish Remover... Lol
I watched this years ago and wow your voice has changed it messes with my head and im sure it messes with yours even more sorry if i didnt word this very well
does it cure firm? it could be used to get some interesting shapes instead of calving a block for a diy aluminium foundry
good idea
I wonder if the extra density would affect the final product in any way.

I used my stuff on my boards in my barn.made it look special
I recognize this voice... David Spade, is that you!?
Steven Miner now I hear Spade too....at first I thought he sounded like RimStar's channel that does a great amount of cool hacks and cheap builds.
I was thinking pee wee Herman.... 🤔
Loved the video and that stuff would probably be pretty awesome for some different applications. But the acetone thing, the biggest issue with that isn't the fumes or getting high on it, its the fact that it can absorb right through the skin and cause damage to the nervous system. But something fun of you get into it is get some calcium carbide and make some acetylene with it.
you do realize acetone is found naturaly in the human body and there isnt any good amount of evidence to show it harms the body right?

For SAFETY use some gloves and don't make it look like the pot is being HEATED over a stove.
your comment makes no sense.
the fizzing is caused by the air escaping the styrene foam, so that's why it looks like it's boiling.
OP delete your comment
Light Yagami kek
What kind of stove do you have that looks like that?
I took the end solution and put it on my face so I could make a mask...
After 30 mins it showed no signs of hardening.... didnt work out as I
had planned.
Are you a guy or a girl? you sound like a girl at some parts but a guy at others
tubtub561 transgender
oh ok :)
tubtub561 Why ask? It doesn't matter.
Jarod Morris “Men and women are happier and healthier when
they acknowledge and celebrate their respective
gender differences.”
It makes for a more enjoyable video, Knowing someones gender also gives a mental image along with sound so its more like there talking directly to you. I feel its more enjoyable when people talk to you (in theory) not at you :)
***** i love how sarcastic that comment is.
If i remember rightly you can use gasoline too but that can be used as napalm because the styrofoam kinda acts like hot liquid caramel does.
yeah , using gasoline is better because is usefull to make fire
yeah , using gasoline is better because is usefull to make fire
I thought he was gonna make something!!! I just wasted 8 minutes of my life
You could possibly use it to mould some sort of battery pack for your bike.
use gloves
Charlie Antolin And a respirator
Reminded me while it was still squishy of cornstarch and water.
Hey look, it's Hilary Clinton
+Jamie Avery that jokes a stretch
:P

Trolls can be obvious at times
Zealous Valkyrie
ColdFloe is an insult to trolls, in order to troll you have to make the other person care, and he fell flat on his face with that. maybe he'll grow up to be a troll, but thats a long way off.
I didn't thought that styrofoam dissolve only with acetone very good idea thanks for sharing it:)
:) The musical accompaniment lends well to this charming petro-jelly instructional.
Fond recollections of 3:48, "the plank-of-poly plops into it's spirits like the drunken gutterpup into his bottle".
Can you possibly use that puddy to mold something? Will be fun to do
the result is a useful Glue, not just for play.
we use this styrofoam and kerosene to make glue for shoes and other stuff.
WONDERING IF IT BECAME COMPLETELY HARD OR THROWN OUT
That's even cooler than watching paint dry
its the same when you do liquid glue under or in water with the right mixtue
Ify you add (depending on how much you made)
A teaspoon to 5 tablespoons of cornflour then it becomes less sticky and keeps its shape abit more
Well now, this sure is neat. Does it eventually cure solid?
Gasoline can dissolve Styrofoam too and it is the same as rugby contact cement...
Dissolved Styrofoam on acetone have many uses...
Good for handyman's DIY tool...
The Acetone is safe to touch, its even great to get tar or paint of your hands. But I'm thinking about the plastic possioning from the freshly dissolved plastic. The Acetone would be helping the toxins from the plastic break through your protective layer (skin) easy. just means your balls may not work now lol
if u take styrafome and spray paint it with rustoleum it will desolve
Handling organic solvents without safety gear is 'BAD BANANAS DUDE'!!
You got balls showing that yard to the world lol
Acetone de-fats the skin and can have central nervous system effects via skin absorption. Check the Material Safety Data Sheet. Not to mention the fact that it is extremely flammable. I'd recommend finding another toy.
He doesn't realize that goo can be poured into a mold and create very hard plastic pieces. He also doesn't realize that acetone is now swimming through his veins.
thats not how acetone works, but yes i know you can mold it but its not very useful given how long it takes to evaporate
This would be good to use in a mold for figurines and more.
Can you make Glue that stays sticky when its dry ? looking for a homemade re positionable glue help if you can..
This stuff is really handy. Ive used it in a home made injector to injection mold clone parts for old toys or to clone figures and models completely. Ive also used gasoline to do this back pre highschool so 20+ years but that was used for a different experiment entirely😅
You can make temporary slime out of that
Weird, definitely weird, but oh so fascinating.
the sound track sounds like an old video game.. love it haha
Ok what can I put it on and how long does it take to harden back up
you have to light it during its liquid. it burns like napalm
P.S. My Motto has been " KEEP IT OUT OF THE DIRT " from as far back as I can remember ? about 8 ?. I just made 40 yrs. of being 29. ALOHA.
