The silhouette of the Van is the synonymous with family trips and vacations in India. A true, cost-effective and comfortable people mover. This design lives upto this day in India. Herr Heiliger should be proud that his design has touched so many people around the world.

I drove this with the diesel as a company car in college in the 90's. Had 700,000 kilometers on it and still had the same drivetrain and even clutch on it. It also wasn't slow on the top speed. It is superbly built. Three years later I asked a friend that still worked there about it and he said that it still hasn't needed anything other than regular maintenance, now at 850,000km.

When I was a little kid in the mid 90s, our local bus company got one of those and used them on my way to school several times a week. I remember that sitting in this minibus was an absolute treat compared to all other buses that were running around. I lovedthe "efficient" form factor made an impression on me, just like the high quality of the interior, and oh, the beautiful driver's dashboard. I was always looking forward to getting to school in this.
In India, company named Force motors collaborated with Daimler and produced and sold under the name Force TempoTraveller.. Still leading its class with this same design..

I own Mercedes Benz 208D (1989, L2H1), still my favorite van off all vans that we owned during the years. Simply a van that will not let you down, it just keeps going. It has done 630 000km during the time we used it as a daily work horse, and still engine is as good as it was on day 1 we bought it, yeah rust took a toll on its looks but it has been retired for a while, still enjoy driving it around farm from time to time just to keep it in working order. My second favorite is Mercedes Sprinter 211CDI (2005, L2H2), it has done 517 000km and still going strong when called upon to do the work, but retired also. These new Sprinters simply don't have a "soul" it's tech and lots of electronic gizmos that makes your driving experience much better, but they lack personality. Still great vans, now own 316CDI (2016 L2H2) as a daily work horse. But those older ones are like a family members to me, by the sound they made you know what "mood" they are in, you feel connected to it and know exactly how much you can push them, and they will never let you down or leave stranded on the side of the road. Now I treat them as monuments, they helped our business grow and will never be sold. But would like to upgrade to an E-Sprinter once the range of EV commercial cars becomes better
best van in this era! strong engines, suspension and gearing system. i my opinion very underrated these days.. but i know these well. the sprinter 1gen is also a hit. i like these videos. on one day its priceless to have. the person itself side by side. love it
I also had two for my job as a plant mechanic in the 80s/90s you are right they were the best van ever made, a solid front beam axle with king pins and a leaf spring at each corner, built like a truck also comfortable, I had a 308d then a 310d, I loved them and now I have an old 208d autotrail campervan which has a turbo, good luck in finding a campervan.

Т1 это настоящий железный Мерседес, простой и надёжный. За внешний вид 10 из 10 "тёплый ламповый". Отсутствие на фиг ненужных электронных "помошников", рессорная подвеска, а поворот передних колёс на 54 градуса позволяет парковать в очень маленькие места. OM 602.940 очень бодро таскает длиннобазный с высокой крышей бус и прицеп. Спринтер, это пластмассовый ширпотреб по сравнению с Т1. Увидеть создателя и сказать ему спасибо было давней мечтой, дядечке и другим создателям всех благ. 310D автобус со мной с 2005 года, расставаться не собираемся.
In India when diesel was subsidized, these things were cheap as chips to run. They were built under license and were all over the place. what a timeless elegant design.
We used to have one but it was the 409D model, year 1983, equipped with 5cylinder 300d engine and a big body. My dad and I drove it for 13 years and it never let us down even in the worst roads and overweight!

Great memories. I loved sitting in the middle seat as a kid. I placed the fingernails of my left hand very lightly on the black ball of the gearshift lever so that they were made to dance by its vibrations… Still a nice, elegant and appropriate design.

This paved the way for the larger T2 which in later years morphed into the Vario, the best chassis to be ever used for building 24-33 seater buses. Such a reliable motor, you could throw them anywhere. A pleasure to drive, these Atego built buses don’t hold a candle to the Vario. They’re far too big. Mercedes should never have ceased the production of the Vario, I’m sure there would’ve been a way to produce it with cleaner emissions
even tho merc did not make it in india the force vans over here were still so incredible. brings me many memories especially when i see one today, even if its the new generation.
