I don’t think I’ve ever seen him brimming with that much excitement after a HR, no matter how spectacular. Not even after his 40/40 grand slam. This man is a pitcher before he’s a slugger. He just happens to be amazing in both. He’s going to pitch next year, because that’s what he lives for.

50/50 is 10x harder. These “HR” only people would only be singing a different tone if Sho isn’t Asian. “Rule change makes it easy”…yet nobody is doing it.
Theoretically base stealing should be increasing with the new rules. But it isn’t. No one is stealing 100+ bases like up to the 60s. Reason? Pitchers are better at quick pitching. Better pick off moves. Catchers “pop up” quicker. All mechanics measures in modern baseball.
@-.TS.- Also replay. If Henderson or Brock attempted to steal a base, the umps would probably side with the baserunner on a bang-bang play. But now replay can overturn it if the runner was out by 0.2 seconds. Overall, this meant teams would attempt fewer steals.

People were wondering what if Shohei could only either pitch or hit, would he be the best at that one thing. We got half of that answer this season. Now if he could just be a pitcher next season, will he win a Cy Young. As far as MVP, he'll probably be getting tire of getting them every season.

It's not that he'll have a fit if someone tells him otherwise, he'll listen to anybody with respect, but he's not going to change his mind. That's why he's the only 2 way player in existence. If he had listened to people around him, he'd long be a 1 way player by now. Look at Skenes, look at Caglianone, look at Eldridge. I had high hopes for them to become the next great 2 way player but it took them less than a year to become 1 way. They pretty much listened to their coaches' advice, I guess.
I can see him pitch till he gets till he gets a 100 wins, playing with the dodgers winning 90 games a season plus. That should be no problem if healthy. Then the end of the contract. I can see him become a closer. Think about it. 500 hrs, 100 wins, 100 saves.
Can't blame him... Ohtani has a 3.01 ERA and a 38 and 19 record (lets not mention the 4 or 5 saves per season the Halos blew for him) as he was on a team that was routinely 12 to 18 games under 500
He's gotta pitch at least a couple of years. He's a top 5 pitcher in the NL. He can easily win 20 games and strike out 250. 2 years ago on a terrible hitting Angels club, he had a 2.33 ERA, Won 15 games (7 games he had a no decision or loss where he gave up 2 or less runs). Yes, his stolen bases will go down, but I think L.A. would love a 20 game winner who hits 45 home runs and "only" 25 steals. Absolutely 100%.
He’s not missing 20-30 games because of pitching. When he was healthy it was 155 and 157. They made a new rule because of him. When he’s pitching and comes out he can remain batting.
Commentators keep suggesting that pitching lowers Ohtani's offensive output and shutting him down as a pitcher would make him a more productive hitter. Ohtani was a full-time DH and starting pitcher last season - when he was shut down for surgery in mid-September he had 44 home runs and a .304 batting average - one less home run and 12 points higher average than this 2024 season on the same date. Ergo, the assertion that having him pitch interferes with his hitting has no basis whatsoever - it's pure conjecture. What it would have SOME effect on is stealing bases on days he is pitching - he would probably be less aggressive on the bases when he is pitching to conserve his energy. So, they should throw away an elite starter who could be the ace of the staff in the HOPES that it might result in him hitting a few more home runs? That's why these people are commentators and not MLB managers. Aside from all that - what Shohei wants, Shohei gets, - and Shohei wants to fulfill his dream of being a 2-way star and 99.9% of baseball fans want to see him do it! No manager is going to tell him he can't pitch if he's able - he would kill the golden goose and Shohei would demand out.
He will pitch no doubt. He has so much pride in pitching than we think. I think next personal challenge in his mind now is winning Cy Young and I think he’ll get it done. He’s ridiculous.
Gotta say as a Mets fan it’s rough luck for them and Lindor that he had to share a league with Ohtani this year because he would’ve had MVP locked up otherwise. Guess he’ll continue to be one of the most slept on stars in the league. Ohtani is unbelievably talented.
I said this before this season, Shohei is THE greatest baseball player ever. When his arm is right, he's one of the best pitchers in the game. He has off the chart numbers and feats like how Chamberlain had in basketball.

I think Ohtani could always steal bases, but the Angels tried to overprotect him and keep him healthy since he was also their most important pitcher. He certainly practiced and improved things this year but he's always been fast.
Good thing to point out is in terms of speed, ohtani is not even one of the fastest players in he field. He just studies enemy pitchers and pick apart their mechanics so that he can steal bases.
The reason Ohtani didn't steal as much with the Angels is because he pitched and hit in the same games. Running takes a lot of energy, and he needed his legs to pitch. That's the real reason he didn't steal as much. The Angels weren't holding him back for fear he would injure his leg while stealing. In the previous years, he was a quick runner who stole bases. This year, he is a great base stealer who is fast. It has as much to do with his studying pitchers as he is improving his take off time.

Not a Dodgers fan (go Dbacks), but there is no denying that Ohtani is pure talent....I honestly would be surprised if he makes 60/60. My only gripe is MLB themselves .aking him out to be the only story...even in games where Dodgers lose he's still the one they show on social media, not the other team that beat them. I hate when people -- fans, press, clubs, etc. -- want to take away something that makes someone special just 'cause "they're already special enough" ... Stop asking the question. If he decides he shouldn't pitch anymore, fine. But asking the question isn't just way too early, it's rude to him. And it's rude to the fans that have to pay the ridiculous prices in part 'cause of how much he's being paid, and he didn't sign a contract that's going to pay him the rest of his natural life to just be a hitter, no matter how good a hitter he is.

Theres no question in my mind that Shohei will want to add a Cy Young award to his career achievements. Since high school Shohei was always best known for his dominant pitching performances. Lets face it, he is establishing benchmarks that could stand for the next century, so he may as well rewrite the pitching standard as well. Having seen the joy that he gets from winning games with his arm, I know that he will insist on taking two or three shots at a Cy Young before he is willing to talk about a permanent move to DH.

Dont get me wrong Ohtani's 50/50 season is incredible and yesterdays game may have been the best single game performance by a batter in MLB history but I believe Acuna's 40/70 is more impressive. It wasnt a 40/40 season. It was 40/70! 41 HR and 73 SB to be exact which is combined total of 114 combined. Ohtani's combined total is currently 102. He has 9 games to surpass 114 and until he does it baffles me that anyone would think that Ohtani's season this year was better than Acuna's last season.
I think 50/50 is harder than 40/70. Think about it. If you need a stolen base or a HR in a game, what’s easier? You get about 4ABs to hit a HR. Singles are easier (let alone you can walk). And once you get on, you can steal two bases if you’re highly skilled. Even in Ohtani’s pursuit, the 50 SBs were never in doubt (except the other day when it looked like he may have hurt his ankle). The 50 HRs were gonna be a problem. Pitchers can also pitch around you and intentionally walk you as a HR hitter. Don’t get me wrong. Acuna’s season was remarkable. But if Acuna wagers Ohtani a million bucks, Acuna has to hit 50 HR, Ohtani has to steal 70 SB, who would you bet on?
50-50 is way more harder with bigger bases and pitcher limits, and young pitchers coming out bullpen with 102+ mph pitches. Also a HR is a sure run while a steal does not guarantee any in return. Only two players in the MLB hit over 50 HRs (Judge 56, Ohtani 53) while 5 players stole over 40 steals but also only two over 50, De La Cruz and Ohtani. Both impressive but 50-50 will not be repeated in our lifetime.

I think the solution is to pitch him relief no more than every other game. His best pitch is an arm stresser. If he pitches relief, he only throws that pitch maybe twice. Starting he has to throw it several times to keep hitters honest. Just something to think about.

The true “Shohei” experience that will sustain the influx of casual interest will always need the dual pitching/hitting phenomenon. Dodgers would be making a mistake and would likely piss Sho off if they stopped him from pitching. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Let’s see if he can do it.

You can watch him raise his glove to let him take the bag both times. And his last to homers were off 60 mph pitches from position players. Literally giving him “home run derby” pitches. Sad really. He could have done it on his own without the league cheating for him.

Ohtani is an amazing player. But no matter what he personally achieves, all that matters is if he can lead the Dodgers to titles. I’m sure he would say the same thing. As a Yankees fan, I wish Aaron Judge would try to steal more bases.

People keep talking about the rule changes, but how much "easier" is it to steal bases, really? One, while the bases are several inches longer (larger) they were positioned in such a way that they are STILL 90 feet from each other. Two, while the disengagement rule seemingly makes it easier to steal bases, we are also currently in an era where teams/managers are far more reluctant to give players the go ahead to stealing a base out of the fear of potentially running them out of an inning. The focus for a long while now is launch angle and swinging for the fences almost no matter what. Running the bases hasn't been a thing for a long while now. Considering the above, an argument can be made that it's actually harder to rack up stolen bases. The volume of opportunities just isn't the same as in years and decades past. It's not like we have a dozen players with 50+ stolen bases or even a single player approaching 100 steals. The moment we start seeing a few players threaten Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock or even Vince Coleman's single-season numbers -- then I'll start to buy into it being easier. Until then I'm nowhere near convinced.
Brodie, you got the definition of “contract value” all wrong. The true quantification of “contract value” is how much dollars a contracted player can bring to a franchise who is paying him ? It’s a pure ROI situation at the end the day. Baseball is one of the great sports, but it’s also business at the end of the day. In this sense Dodgers made the greatest investment by signing Ohtani to a 20-year contract in which 97% of its value will be paid in the latter decade of the contract, which brings a great positive cash flow for the first part of the decade for Dodgers. As far as your point of longevity by keeping Ohtani as a fielder instead of two-way player is that I would say that Ohtani’s intangible value is imbedded in rarity of two-way player, and thus he needs to stay as a two-way player as long as he thinks he can.
IMHO the Dodger’s pitching group is shallow at best. Unless Ohtani can pitch 9 innings every 2-3 days they would be better served acquiring strong pitchers during the off season and let Ohtani do whatever he wants.

What’s the explanation for something like this? And how is a 50/50 season not be impressive if that’s your thinking? Here are the facts. There are 1,213 active MLB players. Out of all those players only 4 players manage to steal 40+ bases as of September 19, 2024. That means more than 99% of players couldn’t steal 40 bases. Heck, as of September 19, 2024 about 90% of MLB players couldn’t even manage to steal 10 bases. Looking at it from this FACTUAL perspective and what Shohei Ohtani is achieving now at 51/51 is even more impressive. And to those saying because of the rule change it’s easier or so easy to steal bases what do you have to say to the fact that about 90% of MLB players couldn’t even manage to steal 10 bases? I mean the bases are all the same and they all have the same opportunity as Ohtani. So why?
I think the Dodgers and Ohtani should have a serious conversation about making him their closer. That way he can DH every day and still get to contribute as a pitcher.
Don’t be ridiculous. He is recovering from his surgery. Even if he can pitch, he would still need rehab en plenty of warm up games to get back into form. This is also why there is spring training. You can’t just expect him to suddenly pitch on a high level this late into the season. It has a high chance of causing injuries and worsen his arm which is still recovering. If the Dodger truly care, they would never risk his future for this.
Ohtani couldn't pitch and hit at the same time if he wasn't pitching right and hitting left. If he had to torque his body in the same direction doing both it would be impossible. I wonder if he thought about that when he started at a kid. Maybe his father started him swinging lefty. Just wondering.

Theoretically base stealing should be increasing with the new rules. But it isn’t. No one is stealing 100+ bases like up to the 60s. Reason? Pitchers are better at quick pitching. Better pick off moves. Catchers “pop up” quicker. All mechanics measures in modern baseball.

It's not that he'll have a fit if someone tells him otherwise, he'll listen to anybody with respect, but he's not going to change his mind. That's why he's the only 2 way player in existence. If he had listened to people around him, he'd long be a 1 way player by now. Look at Skenes, look at Caglianone, look at Eldridge. I had high hopes for them to become the next great 2 way player but it took them less than a year to become 1 way. They pretty much listened to their coaches' advice, I guess.

I can see him pitch till he gets till he gets a 100 wins, playing with the dodgers winning 90 games a season plus. That should be no problem if healthy. Then the end of the contract. I can see him become a closer. Think about it. 500 hrs, 100 wins, 100 saves.

He's gotta pitch at least a couple of years. He's a top 5 pitcher in the NL. He can easily win 20 games and strike out 250. 2 years ago on a terrible hitting Angels club, he had a 2.33 ERA, Won 15 games (7 games he had a no decision or loss where he gave up 2 or less runs). Yes, his stolen bases will go down, but I think L.A. would love a 20 game winner who hits 45 home runs and "only" 25 steals. Absolutely 100%.

He’s not missing 20-30 games because of pitching. When he was healthy it was 155 and 157. They made a new rule because of him. When he’s pitching and comes out he can remain batting.
Commentators keep suggesting that pitching lowers Ohtani's offensive output and shutting him down as a pitcher would make him a more productive hitter. Ohtani was a full-time DH and starting pitcher last season - when he was shut down for surgery in mid-September he had 44 home runs and a .304 batting average - one less home run and 12 points higher average than this 2024 season on the same date. Ergo, the assertion that having him pitch interferes with his hitting has no basis whatsoever - it's pure conjecture. What it would have SOME effect on is stealing bases on days he is pitching - he would probably be less aggressive on the bases when he is pitching to conserve his energy. So, they should throw away an elite starter who could be the ace of the staff in the HOPES that it might result in him hitting a few more home runs? That's why these people are commentators and not MLB managers. Aside from all that - what Shohei wants, Shohei gets, - and Shohei wants to fulfill his dream of being a 2-way star and 99.9% of baseball fans want to see him do it! No manager is going to tell him he can't pitch if he's able - he would kill the golden goose and Shohei would demand out.

I think Ohtani could always steal bases, but the Angels tried to overprotect him and keep him healthy since he was also their most important pitcher. He certainly practiced and improved things this year but he's always been fast.
Good thing to point out is in terms of speed, ohtani is not even one of the fastest players in he field. He just studies enemy pitchers and pick apart their mechanics so that he can steal bases.
The reason Ohtani didn't steal as much with the Angels is because he pitched and hit in the same games. Running takes a lot of energy, and he needed his legs to pitch. That's the real reason he didn't steal as much. The Angels weren't holding him back for fear he would injure his leg while stealing. In the previous years, he was a quick runner who stole bases. This year, he is a great base stealer who is fast. It has as much to do with his studying pitchers as he is improving his take off time.

My only gripe is MLB themselves .aking him out to be the only story...even in games where Dodgers lose he's still the one they show on social media, not the other team that beat them.

The story goes, after his 99 season, where he saw his numbers decline with old age, and his buddies Sosa and McGwire getting all the attention BC of the HR chase, he got jealous and started using PED. I hate when people -- fans, press, clubs, etc. -- want to take away something that makes someone special just 'cause "they're already special enough" ... Stop asking the question. If he decides he shouldn't pitch anymore, fine. But asking the question isn't just way too early, it's rude to him. And it's rude to the fans that have to pay the ridiculous prices in part 'cause of how much he's being paid, and he didn't sign a contract that's going to pay him the rest of his natural life to just be a hitter, no matter how good a hitter he is.

Theres no question in my mind that Shohei will want to add a Cy Young award to his career achievements. Since high school Shohei was always best known for his dominant pitching performances. Lets face it, he is establishing benchmarks that could stand for the next century, so he may as well rewrite the pitching standard as well.
Having seen the joy that he gets from winning games with his arm, I know that he will insist on taking two or three shots at a Cy Young before he is willing to talk about a permanent move to DH.
Just get Roki Sasaki and let Shohei be the reliever or closer and he won't need to start. 💀

By all rights he should be at home recuperating from Tommy John surgery but instead, he starts the 50-50 club.
Dont get me wrong Ohtani's 50/50 season is incredible and yesterdays game may have been the best single game performance by a batter in MLB history but I believe Acuna's 40/70 is more impressive. It wasnt a 40/40 season. It was 40/70! 41 HR and 73 SB to be exact which is combined total of 114 combined. Ohtani's combined total is currently 102. He has 9 games to surpass 114 and until he does it baffles me that anyone would think that Ohtani's season this year was better than Acuna's last season.
I think 50/50 is harder than 40/70. Think about it. If you need a stolen base or a HR in a game, what’s easier? You get about 4ABs to hit a HR. Singles are easier (let alone you can walk). And once you get on, you can steal two bases if you’re highly skilled. Even in Ohtani’s pursuit, the 50 SBs were never in doubt (except the other day when it looked like he may have hurt his ankle). The 50 HRs were gonna be a problem. Pitchers can also pitch around you and intentionally walk you as a HR hitter. Don’t get me wrong. Acuna’s season was remarkable. But if Acuna wagers Ohtani a million bucks, Acuna has to hit 50 HR, Ohtani has to steal 70 SB, who would you bet on?
50-50 is way more harder with bigger bases and pitcher limits, and young pitchers coming out bullpen with 102+ mph pitches. Also a HR is a sure run while a steal does not guarantee any in return. Only two players in the MLB hit over 50 HRs (Judge 56, Ohtani 53) while 5 players stole over 40 steals but also only two over 50, De La Cruz and Ohtani. Both impressive but 50-50 will not be repeated in our lifetime.

I think the solution is to pitch him relief no more than every other game. His best pitch is an arm stresser. If he pitches relief, he only throws that pitch maybe twice. Starting he has to throw it several times to keep hitters honest. Just something to think about.

My first reaction was, “Wow, he did it.” Then I watched the game and saw a lot of suspicious activity. The 3rd baseman GAVE him his 2 stolen bases. You can watch him raise his glove to let him take the bag both times. And his last to homers were off 60 mph pitches from position players. Literally giving him “home run derby” pitches. Sad really. He could have done it on his own without the league cheating for him.

I remember being ridiculed for saying Ohtani would be successful in MLB 5 years ago.
People keep talking about the rule changes, but how much "easier" is it to steal bases, really?
One, while the bases are several inches longer (larger) they were positioned in such a way that they are STILL 90 feet from each other.
Two, while the disengagement rule seemingly makes it easier to steal bases, we are also currently in an era where teams/managers are far more reluctant to give players the go ahead to stealing a base out of the fear of potentially running them out of an inning. The focus for a long while now is launch angle and swinging for the fences almost no matter what. Running the bases hasn't been a thing for a long while now.
Considering the above, an argument can be made that it's actually harder to rack up stolen bases. The volume of opportunities just isn't the same as in years and decades past. It's not like we have a dozen players with 50+ stolen bases or even a single player approaching 100 steals.
The moment we start seeing a few players threaten Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock or even Vince Coleman's single-season numbers -- then I'll start to buy into it being easier. Until then I'm nowhere near convinced.
It was easier to do with the new rules, stealing bases is easier when the pitcher can’t keep a runner on base.
Brodie, you got the definition of “contract value” all wrong. The true quantification of “contract value” is how much dollars a contracted player can bring to a franchise who is paying him ? It’s a pure ROI situation at the end the day. Baseball is one of the great sports, but it’s also business at the end of the day. In this sense Dodgers made the greatest investment by signing Ohtani to a 20-year contract in which 97% of its value will be paid in the latter decade of the contract, which brings a great positive cash flow for the first part of the decade for Dodgers. As far as your point of longevity by keeping Ohtani as a fielder instead of two-way player is that I would say that Ohtani’s intangible value is imbedded in rarity of two-way player, and thus he needs to stay as a two-way player as long as he thinks he can.
Maybe Elly de la Cruz one day? But I doubt it.
IMHO the Dodger’s pitching group is shallow at best. Unless Ohtani can pitch 9 innings every 2-3 days they would be better served acquiring strong pitchers during the off season and let Ohtani do whatever he wants.
9 games left in normal season and he’s 52/52… could he go 60/60 before playoffs?

Judge, Santander, Soto, and Ozuna combined for a total of 18 stolen bases compare to Ohtani’s 51 all by himself. What’s the explanation for something like this? And how is a 50/50 season not be impressive if that’s your thinking?
Here are the facts. There are 1,213 active MLB players. Out of all those players only 4 players manage to steal 40+ bases as of September 19, 2024. That means more than 99% of players couldn’t steal 40 bases.
Heck, as of September 19, 2024 about 90% of MLB players couldn’t even manage to steal 10 bases. Looking at it from this FACTUAL perspective and what Shohei Ohtani is achieving now at 51/51 is even more impressive.
And to those saying because of the rule change it’s easier or so easy to steal bases what do you have to say to the fact that about 90% of MLB players couldn’t even manage to steal 10 bases? I mean the bases are all the same and they all have the same opportunity as Ohtani. So why?
I think the Dodgers and Ohtani should have a serious conversation about making him their closer. That way he can DH every day and still get to contribute as a pitcher.
No way. He’s too dominant as a starter and they need as much pitching as they can get.
Don’t be ridiculous. He is recovering from his surgery. Even if he can pitch, he would still need rehab en plenty of warm up games to get back into form. This is also why there is spring training. You can’t just expect him to suddenly pitch on a high level this late into the season. It has a high chance of causing injuries and worsen his arm which is still recovering.
If the Dodger truly care, they would never risk his future for this.

Maybe in 4 years, he might volunteer to pitch in the bullpen as a high-leverage reliever, setup guy or closer. So many possibilities for Ohtani.

Ohtani couldn't pitch and hit at the same time if he wasn't pitching right and hitting left. If he had to torque his body in the same direction doing both it would be impossible. I wonder if he thought about that when he started at a kid. Maybe his father started him swinging lefty. Just wondering.
let's see...if shohei can maintain this rate of 3 hr and 2 stolen bases per game...he will have 87 hrs and 75 stolen bases for the regular season...that's pretty good.
