    The bass, Geoff, arranged this one! He and the beatboxer, Layne, take turns.
    And yeah, Geoff is definitely my favourite bass singer, his voice always sounds so rich and full. He can go stupid low.

      My rule of thumb if I don't have time to look is the more Geoff is showing off, the more likely it is Layne arranged it.

    The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, was the arranger for this piece. 99% of the time, either he or Layne Stein (the vocal percussionist) are the arrangers for VoicePlay's music. Whoever does the arrangement also directs and edits the video, and does the initial mix before sending the track off to Ed Boyer (who does the final mix for pretty much all the big a cappella groups). Eli (ryhmes with 'jelly') Jacobson, the bald tenor, does the lighting work for the videos.
    Every one of the guys in this group has a remarkable range, and vocal skills for days, but Geoff does tend to attract a lot of attention. Possibly because of his ridiculous low notes, as well as his highs (his range is roughly 5 octaves), but just as possibly because he also has a solo channel where he produces his own covers, filling in all the vocal lines himself. Those are also worth checking out, as you can more clearly get a grasp of his astonishing range. Believe it or not, Layne's range is actually pretty similar to Geoff's, although you seldom get to hear him singing since he's generally going nuts with the percussion.

    I believe that Tim of Home Free and Geoff have a very similar range. Where Geoff stands out is in the rich smooth tone he has. It sets him apart. Their latest, The Dragonborn Comes, from the video game Skyrim, is stunning. Geoff opens with his outstanding bass. Their arrnagements are outstanding, always. They don't always use these theatrical styles but when they do, it's always amazing.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Their ranges are identical (B0-A5). Geoff just uses a lot more subharmonics, which tend to be a bit fuller... and, Geoff's voice has a bit more resonance, to begin with.

    • @gabrielwoolf1037
      @gabrielwoolf1037 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This, yes! We need Dragonborne Comes on here.. not only for Goeff, but its an amazing song from Voiceplay

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Vince Mcmahon, a lot of professional bass singers discount the use of subharmonics, too... I am not one of them. So, we're splitting hairs here. Geoff hits fry F1's all the time. He hits them with subharmonics, as well; Geoff is only good in full chest to F#1... still a low bass, no matter how you slice it. I prefer Geoff's voice, but I will play the devil's advocate, from time-to-time.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Vince Mcmahon, I am all for subharmonics. I can hit C1 in chest and just learned how to use subharmonics. Now, I am trying to control them to do a C0 without any fry. When you get that low, it's very difficult. Oh, Geoff's resonance is even stronger than mine, even though I have a lower voice. His power below C2 is incredible.

      I just watched an "updated" video of Tim Foust's lowest notes and the showed him doing an AO. I don't know much about these but I understand that that is on of the lowest notes? Correct me if I am wrong. But that is now Tim's lowest note.

  • @huldradraco
    @huldradraco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

    Geoff and Tim basically have the same range. the difference between them is the timbre and techniques used. Tim has a growly bass, Avi has a smooth breathier bass, while Geoff has a rich and resonant bass. it makes Geoff's low range seemingly sound deeper than the others, but his just has a richer resonance down low. Avi's low range isn't quite as low as Geoff and Tim.

    • @nikelodeon6852

    Ooggie Boogie and My Mother Told Me are both great Voice Play songs. Geoff (Jeff) is an extreme bass. You can hear his low tones on display in 16 Tons and Misty Mountains, two of his solo acts. Love watching your reactions!

    Tim Foust, Geoff Castellucci, and Avi Kaplan all have very similar ranges. They each have their own personal styles and sounds. I think they are so close in range that it probably comes down to how well they're singing on any given day.

  • @snappy6132
    @snappy6132 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I'm glad you like this. It was arranged by the bass, Geoff. Most of their songs are arranged by him and the beatboxer, Layne. They also do almost everything around recording the music videos themselves, sets, costumes, lightning etc. You can read about it in the video descriptions. I really suggest checking out more of their stuff, like the last one they did, Dragonborn comes from Skyrim, My mother told me, The Wicked medley are really epic. Or try The little mermaid medley for something fun. Some members changed over the time and they often have guest singers join them. In this one you saw the current members, except Jose (bearded guy in the middle).

    Actually... Peter Barber of The Bass Gang has said that Geoff holds one of the lowest recorded notes. So much talent in this group. Geoff and Layne do most of the arranging duties. Eli has a flair for creating backdrops.

    Cesar's first line at the beginning wasn't actually falsetto. He was letting a lot more air escape with the sound which leads to that softer, breathier sound. And you're correct, falsetto does tend to be a thinner sound without the richness he had in that line.

    2. Open your eyes during visuals these great. You missed the iconic sword capture, dude.
    3. Geoff Castellucci (pronounced "Jeff", the bass singer, lower right) did the vocal arrangement, video, collaborated with Eli Jacobson (pronounced "Ellie", the bald guy) on lighting.
    4. Geoff has his own channel of just him singing (plus other non-singing videos), often layering several 'Geoffs' both vocally and visually in his videos, which are usually accompanied, not acapella. Quite the treat for a bass enthusiast like yourself!

    Oooh, I'm excited for this one! Voiceplay is one of my fav acapella groups, I was really hoping you'd react to them some day. Highly recommend checking out more of their covers, it's all good, tho my fav will prob always be the Oogie Boogie song. Since you're a Home Free fan you might also enjoy the sing-off they had with that group to the song Survivor.
    If you do check out more of their stuff you'll see members switch a few times. They've had some members come and go. Layne, Geoff, and Eli are the most consistent in all of it. They do also get a lot of guest singers, so there's a lot of vocal variety.

    Thanks for finally reacting to Voice Play! I enjoyed your reaction a lot and look foward to more reactions to Voice Play from you. As others have already given you great information about them in the comments I will tell you that they are a group from Orlando Florida that worked at Universal or Disney while they attended college in Orlando. They have a very different style and approach to acapella than Pentatonix or Home Free and are frequently called the theater kids of the acapella world. As already stated in other comments, they do all of their own production, costumes, lighting, and all of the arrangements are done by Layne (the beatboxer) and Geoff (the deep bass singer arranged this one). Geoff and Layne have been friends performing together since they were in junior high school and they have known Eli (bald high tenor-- name pronounced like "belly") for a long time too. They have had a few staff changes and were down to just the three of them recently (Cesar with the bad eye here is their newest member). They have recently worked with many guest singers (Jose Rosario in this one) as they are friends with some of them since their college days of working at the theme parks and are friends with the members of Pentatonix and Home Free as well. They appeared on the 4th season of "The Sing Off' competing against Home Free and unfortunately were eliminated after the 4th or 5th episode and Home Free went on to win season 4 of "The Sing Off" (Voice Play was very rough in the beginning and their lead singer "Honey" was not good for them as an acapella group so Home Free really did deserve the win at the time). They did a Sing Off tour with the other groups after the 4th season and there is a silly video of them having some fun with Home Free on You Tube "Survivor- Zombies vs Hillbillies". Voice Play has improved so much in the past 10 years and are absolutely amazing now. Geoff Castellucci has his own solo channel on You Tube that you may want to check out for more of his insane bass notes and incredible vocal range. He has a different technique for his bass singing than Tim or Avi using subharmonics for a different kind of sound ( I agree with you about his bass and he is my favorite of all the bass singers too). Some of my favorites that they have done are "My Mother Told Me" and "The Little Mermaid Medley" featuring Rachael Potter (long time Ariel/Little Mermaid at Disney World and features Geoff as Ursula). Enjoy this journey!!

    Voiceplay is based in Orlando and most of the guys have worked at the theme parks, so that has a lot to do with their theatrically. They also do quite a few Disney, movie and musical theater songs as well as pop. As to the difference between Tim Foust and Geoff Castellucci, it has to do with the techniques they use to produce those lows. Tim tends to utilize growl and fry, and Geoff uses subharmonics.

It's kind of a master class in how to build energy in an acapella song, and build it bigger, and build it bigger in a headlong rush to the ending. It doesn't leave reactors a lot to grab a hold of. The song is from Pirates of the Carribean II. Its the story of Davey Jones and Calypso. You should watch the movie and it will make sense. The king is Davey Jones and the Queen is Calypso. (bound her in her bones. made her human and took away her power.) The rest of the story unfolds with the song. Fiddlers Green is the pirate home..

    Thanks for your reaction, I enjoyed it. For me, what makes Geoff (bass) superior is the fullness, resonance and beauty of his tone. Layne (beatbox) can go lower, but he's the first to say "but it doesn't sound as good." He uses it powerfully in his beatboxing, though, which is always creative and interesting. Do check out the newest one, Dragonborn, you're going to love Geoff's opening.

    Geoff and Tim Foust do have similar ranges, but completely different tones. Both are great. Tim's really low notes are more growl and breathy or covered, Geoff's have a little more edge that makes them a little more resonant and stand out more.

    Hoist the Colors is a song from Pirates of the Caribbean and the song self is about calypso; the goddess of the sea. So the song itself is basically about the Pirates taking Calypso from the sea and binding her into human form thus the lines the king and his men stole the queen from her bed and bound her in her bones. So when they bound Calypso in her human form they were able to control her and rule over the Seas

    Geoff(Jeff) has a 5 octave range. This isn't even his lowest. Listen to his cover of the Beatles "Blackbird". His solo stuff will slay you.
    5 star rating for your reaction.

    Geoff readily admits he is not a base singer and is more comfortable as a baritone. I thinks this sets him apart because he works to get the low base right. Also, I think he is the only acapella base that can seriously belt out in the tenor range giving him a 5 octave range.

    Oh. It's a five star. So is their cover of Bang! VP takes on many different genres of covers. IMHO Geoff outdoes himself on If I were a Rich Man, in the last measure of so, going high to low. It's one thing sing a range across a phrase. It's another to do it within 3 notes.

    Home Free is my overall favorite group. And I (try to) sing some Tim Foust songs in karaoke. But I agree with you Geoff is the best bass. And its honestly not even close. The other bass singers can get as low as him but they don't sound as clear as he does at those extremely low registers. But with that being said, Tim Foust is by FAR the most versatile bass. Watch his video "Will you love me tomorrow". It will blow your mind what he can do.

    To begin with you have GOT to go and listen to their new release the dragon born comes. The base also arranged this one and it is phenomenal.
    For fun you might want to check out Qofy’s reaction to this piece. He was so blown away he got up and walked away for a moment forgetting he was still in his boxers!
    Jose (center rear) was a last minute substitution but you would think they had sing together for years. He is currently in Hamilton and also a member of Rockapella. He also appeared in the Norse Saga My Mother Told Me. Geoff has some sustained low notes ( maybe E1 ) that sounds like the Gjallershorn and Eli rocks out channeling his inner Berserker.
    For a totally different vibe check out Boy Bands in 5 Minutes. It starts out with N Sync, segues into the Jackson 5, the Beatles, through the 90s Boy bands and finishes up with BTS. A lot of fun. Can’t Help Falling in Love With You and Bridge Over Troubled Water are both gorgeous.

    Suggest you react to Voice Play's Halo Theme and The Dragonborn Comes (from Skyrim). I think you'll love them and Geoff goes totally subterranean on both of them. Geoff (the bass) arranged both the Halo Theme and The Dragonborn Comes. I'm not sure whether Geoff or Layne arranged this one. Whoever did it, it's fabulous. And definitely check out Geoff's solo work. I recommend Blackbird and 16 Tons.

    In my opinion, the difference between Voiceplay, Home Free, and PTX is the position in the group of the person arranging the songs. Geoff is the only bass in any of the groups that is one of the main arrangers. Geoff knows his range and allows himself to go all over the place. His solo stuff really shows off his vocal range.
    The other groups seem to keep their bass locked down in the low range a lot more.
    I kind of wonder if that may be another reason why Avi left PTX. He can use more of his range by himself without stepping on any toes in the middle range.
    Like I said this is just my opinion.

    Geoff Castelucci is their bass. While he has a really deep and rich tone, don't let that fool you into thinking he's a one-trick pony. The guy has a 5-octave range from B0 to A4-ish. Voiceplay are definitely the "theater kids" of acapella. You should definitely check out their Disney medley covers of Moana and The Little Mermaid. Eli (pronounced El-ee) is their high tenor, and you're spot on in your assessment of his own talent. The guy is just a phenomenal tenor, and you can tell from his style that he could easily sing anything from Opera to Metal. As far as arrangements go, it's usually Geoff (pronounced Jeff) and/or Layne (the beatboxer), although Eli sometimes contributes as well. If you want to spotlight Geoff's solo talent you should check out his cover of the Beattles classic "Blackbird". The 5-part harmony he produces and the range on display will leave you speechless.

    Tim has gone lower on video but only in his growl. Geoff has mastered the subharmonic tone. I think Avi has the lowest pure chest voice. They each excel in different areas and styles. Geoff actually has arranged some of Home Free's covers. All three are just astounding.

  • @kellywilliams364
    @kellywilliams364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another reason Geoff sounds lower is because he uses subharmonics where the other guys mentioned usually don't.

    Check out "Go Rest High on the Mountain" By Home Free. Basic Theory here, but Geoff Hits F-1 Here and growls it. Tim Hits a D-1 and Is pushing more air through it. I Absolutely love Geoff's arrangements, more than Tim's honestly, but Tim's voice can push more than Geoff's. Geoff even kinda admits this in his tutorial on how to sing that low.
