If you want a good comparison of VP live vs VP in video, scroll down to the bottom of their YT page to find this same lineup singing Grimm Grinning Ghosts just sitting down in front of a camera. They recorded it after a live performance, and it's amazing.

The Grim Grinning Ghosts are featured at the beginning of the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney
Earl Elkins Jr was their high tenor for 23 years. He is the bald ghost. Eli was hard to spot because he’s got hair and it looks a lot like Colonel Sanders. Tony Wakim is the baritone and he came in when Layne decided to switch from baritone to beatboxer and was with them from 2009 to 2016.
The set for Hide and Seek is a a room at the Mansion and they are all characters from the ride.
Lauren is called the Stairwell Siren because she likes to sing this in her stairwell and scare the crap out of her neighbors. She did a phenomenal job. She has several TikTok duets, one is on VoicePlay’s mini channel where they provide the background vocals. (The Bass Gang will be releasing the same song with Lauren in a week or so. )
This is the same set that is used in the PattyCake Productions piece Villains at the Haunted Mansion. (Well worth viewing, as are their Hocus Pocus themed videos and original series Villains Lair based on Disney villains trying to regain power.)
    Lot of tiny details:
Lauren: her demented eyes turn red just before the banshee. She is semitransparent- you can see embers through her
-Layne’s crazy makeup! A LOT of people had he and Geoff mixed up. Lots of black food color in some sort of gel for his teeth. When he laughs, the inside of his mouth is black. Rick Underwood usually does their makeup on these. He is a genius. Layne did NOT like the airbrushing (tickles😂)
-Grim Grinning Ghost busts appear in the bookshelf behind Geoff (who had to crouch the whole time)
-Eli is unstable Alexander NITROkoff on a keg of TNT/nitroglycerin (BOOM!) (“stretching” portrait behind him)
-Cesar is the medium Madam Leota at the seance table. Was he singing in his head voice?😂
-Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice) provided background eerie tones.

I think what I have read about the song Hide and Seek (Ding Dong), its a Korean song about Devil's tag. There is a spirit that would try to find you and if it caught you, you were dead. It's a really creepy song, when you know the backstory. I honestly don't remember where I read this though and I may have some of the details incorrect but it is the general gist.

08:29 Lauren Paley's high "scream" note is an E♭6, which is hella high for a non-opera singer!

As has been mentioned Lauren Paley is the Stairwell Siren, who loves singing scary songs in her apartment blocks stairwell to frighten her neighbours, in fact she did a tik tok of this song which went viral in which one of her neighbours screamed in the vid.
The ghosts flitting around in the background towards the end were voiced by Elizabeth Zarhof (The Charismatic Voice).

Fun fact a lot of people don't notice: this lively version (of Grim Grinning Ghosts) is similar to the original as sung by the graveyard stone busts and various ghosts at Haunted Mansion, but a very slow, spooky version plays throughout the ride, very ominously on organ.

Tony on the far left co-owns pattycake studios with Layne where this was filmed. These days he’s involved in the costuming and production rather than singing but he has an amazing voice I can’t remember if you’ve watched their phantom of the opera cover but he takes the main part in that. Earl who did the little bit at the end of the ghosts was in the group for a long time but left for personal reasons he had an incredibly high voice. We all still miss him much as we love the urgent lineup🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️.

I love the double features! I had no clue about Hide and Seek because I don't do Tik Tok, but Lauren did this in her stairwell and gave the whole world the creeps. I did seek her out and watch it. Voiceplay contacted her to see if she was interested in a collaboration and she jumped on it.
I watched Earl speaking at the end of Grim Grinning Ghosts and realized that his last line was also Hurry Back! He didn't sound as creepy as Lauren did.
This was great, and you know I will always be here for Geoff and Voiceplay!

“Hide and Seek” isn’t from the Haunted Mansion; Voiceplay just used the Haunted Manion visuals to sell the creepiness. “Hide and Seek” was originally a Korean song performed by the vocaloid (computer-generated singer) SeeU. About 4 years ago Liz Robinette performed an English translation of the song. Earlier this year, Lauren Paley sang it in her apartment complex’s stairwell and became a viral hit. Voiceplay saw that and asked her to collaborate with them on this version. There is one other guest vocalist on “Hide and Seek.” Elizabeth Zarhoff, the Charismatic Voice, provided the voices of all the ghosts there at the end of the song.

The singers here are Geoff, Layne, Eli, Earl, and Tony. The easiest way to identify them is by their _voices_ because the make-up and/or video animation (I'm honestly not sure where one leaves off and the other takes up) are just so extensive. In particular you can't go by hair or lack thereof here, that's all changed. If you want a better look at Tony, he plays the male lead in Phantom of the Opera, which is probably the best thing they did while he was with them, although this one is also good, and First Noel is not bad. These days, Tony can sometimes be seen in intros and outros for Pattycake Productions videos. Earl you probably know from more recent material (he only left the group a year or so ago), and the other three are still current.

  • @Debs_Badger
    @Debs_Badger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

When "Grim Grinning Ghosts" starts, the lineup from L to R is Layne, Earl Elkins Jr. (former Tenor 1), Geoff, Eli and Tony Wakim (former Baritone). The singing busts are actual characters in the Disney attraction The Haunted Mansion, and they sing this song in said attraction. Geoff also plays the host character in this video as well.
"Hide and Seek" is a song that was created by a vocal synthesizer called Vocaloid, and originally in (I think) Korean. It was translated into English, and Lauren Paley had a viral Tik Tok video of her scaring her neighbors performing it in a stairwell. VoicePlay's video is set in The Haunted Mansion universe, with them all playing characters from it, but the song itself is not *from* the attraction.

It didn’t help that Geoff had short hair here.
You can tell how old the VP vid is by how long Geoff’s hair is. Or isn’t. 😏

    Rewriting comment which somehow disappeared.
BOTH songs are set in the Haunted Mansion
Geoff, Layne, Eli, Earl Elkins tenor 1 and Tony Wakim baritone at that time, before JNone.
Nowadays Tony runs Pattycake Production together with Layne, where most videos are shot.
Hide and Seek is set in their Haunted Mansion set. They asked Lauren aka The Stairwell Siren to collaborate. The has made this song hugh on Tiktok.
They are all characters from HM, Geoff the caretajer, Layne the Hatbox Ghost, Cesar Madam Leota, Eli Alexander Nitrikoff on his barrel of nitroglycerin, Lauren being the Ghost Bride. At the end voiceover by the Charismatic Voice doing the flitting ghosts.

Wow, Cole, you picked two great ones- thanks for your reaction! Lots of great info from the other Voice Players in the comments. Hard to recognize them in their costumes here but "Grim Grinning Ghosts" has the lineup from the "Sing Off" days that include Earl and Tony Wakim. Eli looks strange with hair (a wig) and Geoff wore his hair short back in that time period ( still hoping that you will react to "Road Trip" as you still have not been able to see what that lineup really looked like yet). Yes, Cesar is so animated and great with the character voices that I was not sure what his voice and range was like when he first joined Voice Play. Cesar takes more of a lead in Voice Play's cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" and Geoff stated that Cesar's part brought tears to his eyes while he was editing it (that cover is stunning and very different for Voice Play).

A good idea to react to these two songs together. Not just for the background imagery but also for the line "Hurry back!" so prominent at the end of Hide and Seek (Ding, Dong). It's also in Grim Grinning Ghosts. Can you find it? I don't mean Earl saying the line in his little speech. They do sing it.

Lauren aka the Stairwell Siren lives in Nashville and goes into the apartment stairwell to sing creepy songs for her neighbors to hear. She recorded it on TikTok and it went viral. VoicePlay contacted her, and she agreed to do the song with 4 guys. Layne flew to Nashville, recorded her (sounds like she was in the stairwell), then flew back just in front of Hurricane Ian. Elizabeth of The Charismatic Voice does the zippy ghosts background vocals toward the end.

So, I have to say this because everyone keeps saying Hide and Seek is from the Haunted Mansion, it is not. They are using the Haunted Mansion as the backdrop for the song. There's a whole fandom around a series of musical voice synthesizers called Vocaloids and people make songs using this software program and music videos, they're really amazing. Originally Hide and Seek wasn't in English, Voiceplay has given credit to Lizz Robinett's English version of the song. Here's Lizz's version:
    th-cam.com/video/G-YNNJIe2Vk/w-d-xo.html
And here is the Korean version which I'm told is the original, this isn't the original poster I couldn't find it, and it could be just the original poster didn't put it on TH-cam:

This is the Haunted Mansion set at Layne & Tony's PattyCake Productions studio. Layne flew to Nashville to film Lauren's part green screen and back to Orlando before hurricane Ian hit. They still released it in time for Halloween.

The theme is The Haunted Mansion in Disney World and Disneyland. They are ghosts in the mansion.
Lauren made this song famous on tiktok singing it in her apartment building stairwell to scare her neighbors. Voiceplay saw it and asked her to collaborate with them. This the result. Before this they did a mini duet with her tiktok video.
    Characters...
Geoff - Graveyard Caretaker Silas Crump.
Layne - Hatbox Ghost holding a Hatbox for his head.
Cesar - Madame Leota in a crystal ball.
    Lauren - Constance Hathaway/Corpse Bride.
Eli - Alexander Nitrokoff standing on a barrel of dynamite. Alexander portrait is on the wall behind him.
This is my favorite Voiceplay video so far. But they keep using their game with each video.
Geoff's Halloween video is really good but my favorite of his is still
The Rains of Castamere. From Game of Thrones it is absolutely awesome..

I think the beat boxers for VP, HF, and PTX are all world class overall. That said, they each have their strengths, where they shine above the others even more. Adam Rupp I think has the best straight drum kit of the three. Kevin surpasses on other instrument sounds (synth, horns, etc). Layne is the master of sound effects. I don't think this is a coincidence, but rather a reflection on the music styles that each band tends toward.
