All the 80s music had a greater impact as we witnessed it. Later generations may appreciate the music, but will never experience it like those that lived it. The transitions from 1977 to 1982 was perhaps the most dramatic change in music history. Much of this was due to changing technologies.
I think the 60's transition was even more extreme. Early 60's was still a continuation of the 50's sounds until the Beatles/British invasion hit...and then by 66/67, psychedelic and hard rock became significant.
I would extend that to 1984. And I agree. There so many great bands coming out during that time and each one would take us in a new direction. It was such a fun time for music.
Human League started out as a synth band created by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. They wanted Glenn Gregory as the vocalist but he was in another band. So they hired this cool looking dude from school. Philip Oakey. Their first two albums was totally different from the later releases. Ware and Marsh left to do Heaven 17 with Glenn Gregory. Oakey got the rights to the name and brought in the girls, Ian Burden and Jo Callis. The style changed to a more commercial style and success. Check out early Human League songs as Being Boiled and Empire State Human. An early song from the new formation are Sound Of The Crowd.
This is quintessential synth pop. Go to any retro 80's party and this will be played multiple times during the night. The Human League had some other great tunes as well - "Keep Feeling Fascination", "Mirror Man" and "Human" for starters.
I was a freshman in college when this came out. Like what other commenters here have said - the first few times I heard this it dawned on me - music has changed. We're in a new era.
According to the Who Sampled website, this song has been sampled in 41 different songs and has 53 versions. I've never found anything robotic about it, but I soon realized that it might be one of the first songs to show the female version of a male breakup story: a cool and surprising twist for new listeners. In Europe it is one of the most recognizable songs of the 80's along with 'Blue Monday' by New Order and 'Enola Gay' by OMD. Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder made an album in 1985 for the fil "Together In Electric Dreams".
Still have the 45!! Late 70's and early 80's had so many music transitions......disco to new wave to this and hair bands.....wow! And that was just the first few years!!
This album was so futuristic when it was released. Check out *THINGS THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF* and *SOUND OF THE CROWD* and *LOVE ACTION* from the same album
For a lot of people, myself included, hearing this song was like a mallet coming down hard on a gavel as if to say the 80's have begun! I remember listening to Drivers Seat and feeling like that had come out at least a decade before, and not just three years prior. 😂
This song is so full of memories for me. It came out my first year of university. Never saw the video before. It was.....special. ;) Classic synth dance song. Love it! Thanks, Guys. You come up with some great stuff!
To appreciate the nuances of Philip Oakey's voice you need to check out their last big hit called Human. It was produced by Janet Jackson's production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. His stoic delivery barely conceals masked emotions that really deliver. Must be seen with the iconic video. Also worth a look-see is Mirror Man.
This album was my favorite at the time when it was huge, and the whole thing is great. It wasn't until later on that I realized this song was actually pretty creepy and stalkerish. I still love it despite that!
Original Donkey Kong and Tempest. And yes they played this at the Arcade😂. And Agave and Rye is awesome. There is one in Liberty Township, Ohio we eat at.
This song came out when I was in middle school and the big activities back then for us was rollerskating and arcades. They played this song all the time at the skating rink and there was also a small arcade inside the rink. Ah the memories! ❤
Ok cool. I wish you were reacting to “Human” or “(Keep Feeling) Fascination” instead but with DYWMB you should get a high view count (it’s their biggest hit). 👌🏾
Definitely 80’s, my favorite genre. I suggest you guys listen to some Depeche Mode or Pet Shop Boys they are both major synth-pop. You guys will love it!! 😊
When this came out, i never stopped to think about the synth or how different the sound was, just knew it was a great song. There were no rules, bands tried sll kinds of sounds and made great music.
Yes this song got played at my arcade (because they just played whatever came up on the radio or whatever was selected by folks on their huge jukebox.) Played pinball, Gauntlet, Galaga, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger.
I'm sure I probably heard this song in one of the arcades I used to go to back in the early '80s. This song came-out in 1982 which was the year I turned 15 years old. Back then, I was still playing Pac-Man and even more so Ms Pac-Man, so those references Nick made were great and spot-on. It's so funny how that, for so many years, I always thought the first line of each verse was, "You/I were/was working as a waitress in a *coattail* bar..." but I guess it is *"cocktail* bar," after all. 🤔 Hmmm. 🤔 So, of course, this is the most appropriate song by The Human League to start-out with, as it was their first, their biggest and their signature hit. You should also definitely listen and react to, "Mirror Man," "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," "The Lebanon" and their last big hit, the appropriately-titled "Human," which was finally the only song The Human League had with part of their name in the title. I think you will love each and every single one of these songs. They always did keep their smoothness and the vocals got less robotic and more emotional over time.
Human League is underrated with the exception of about 3 songs. Give the following a try: ☆Louise (said to be a follow up song to Don't You Want Me set 10 years later. Has cool keyboard solo that goes hard too) ☆Love Action (also off of Dare) ☆Human (great song with hopeful message and very rich and thick 80s sound) ☆The Lebanon (another great one about conflict in Lebanon in the early 80s)
I was 11 years old when I first heard this one. I remember really liking it, but I think the song "Human" left more of an impression on me. As for arcades, I don't remember ever going to one. My parents didn't have the money to spare. I didn't start playing video games until my cousin got his Atari.
If you like the sound, the released an album under the name of The League Unlimited Orchestra, with extended plays and lots of music. Its worth a listen.

The videos for "Take On Me" and "Billie Jean" have each garnered over 1 billion views on TH-cam. Barron also directed several films, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Coneheads (1993), and The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996).
Heard this when it first came out. Months before it was hit. I was sleeping through my alarm clock until the female vocals came in. I immediately woke up and knew it was going to be huge.
Their first album is much different from the rest. It's dark and industrial, and actually sounds newer and more modern than their 80s hits. Had they stayed like that, they wouldve had a huge cult following, but wouldnt have transitioned to radio till the late 80s, when that kind of music was making headway
Love the Synth! Ryan's Robot brought to mind the Robot Scene from the movie "Eurotrip." Speaking of, would you consider reacting to the song "Scotty Doesn't Know" from Eurotrip? Totally different from today's. It's strange how the mind works in making segues, or in my case, how it DOESN'T work 😛
80s were awesome. Arcade games were everywhere, I remember playing Rally-X at the Grocery Store while my mother shopped. It was right beside the Electric Chicken that layed the plastic eggs with the toy in them.
I do love the song, but the video really makes it. It was hugely innovative for the time, and it still looks great. Y'all really have to do Blue Monday. It's the grandaddy of synth dance tracks.

Mouse Trap was a fun 1980s arcade game. It was a version of "Whack-a-Mole" with a paddle and a fairly large table. The local arcade would run weekly high score contests with the winner getting the t-shirt of their choice. I won for Mouse Trap and got Twisted Sister...those were the days! 😂
They were big for a time. They are great! The guy portrayed in the song is a creep but when you hear the song it is so upbeat and fun. (Like a lot of songs). So fun to sing along with. Love the girl's part (karaoke). I was in 2nd or 3rd grade when this came out and it reminds me of summer and going to the pool everyday. I am sure they played this at the arcade. I loved Pac man, and Mrs Pac man, Frogger, and Space Invaders. At home I would play Tetris for hours. They cut a lot out of the song and video. This is a song you are in the car and turn it up! A fun song!!!
Classic Christmas No1.. every Brit of a certain age KNOWS this by heart. From a fantastic album.. DARE.. one of the very first I ever bought for myself. Every track is a classic. And given the drama of how it came together it's even more remarkable.
This is really THE classic synth-pop song. It's too bad people think 80's music was predominantly synth-pop when it was actually just a tiny niche style of the era. Most of the 80's groups and artists from Prince, Michael Jackson, Michael McDonald, Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Journey, Foreigner, The Go-Go's, Tears for Fears, Simply Red, and hundreds of others were NOT synth-pop. Thank God.
@@matthewashman1406 Yes, synth-pop was really a British invention that turned into the "second British invasion" in the U.S. in the early 80's. In fact, most of the synth-pop groups were British. Because of that they all had a sound-alike quality. Personally, I never cared for any of it. My early 80's (80-82) was Ambrosia, Paul Davis, Robbie Dupree, Michael McDonald, Little River Band, Frankie and the Knockouts, George Benson, Hall & Oates, Dan Fogelberg, Sheena Easton, etc.

Early 80s British pop was exciting at the time.
@@matthewashman1406 I'm not trying to be a music snob. I was just sharing the direction in which my musical tastes naturally flowed. Even so, I have to admit the synth-pop group Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" was definitely a guilty pleasure! For me, the best music of the 80's was from 80 to 82/83. Once Michael Jackson and Madonna hit in 83/84, music styles started to change again.
It's a great song...but if you did have a time machine and when back to late '81 and '82, certainly UK eighties, you would soon get sick of it was it was EVERYWHERE! Still good to hear in a nostalgic way.
Had forgotten about this, but that evocative 80's synth pulls you right back in time. Can't say for certain if I personally heard this one played at an arcade, but I'd put good money on it. The "New Romantic" pop songs were definitely in heavy rotation.
This chorus couldn’t leave your mind if you tried, I remember as a kid when this came out after the repetition of “Don’t you want me baby” we would answer back Nooooooooo. Lol 😂
Personally i love synth pop. I was a child in the 80s when this came out and i loved the music. I think synth pop was only very popular in the early 80s, 1980 to 1983. Can i recommend Kraftwerk' The Model and Yazoo- Nobody's Diary. Also i have to say, excellent channel, i love your reaction videos.

The song is about Dorothy Stratten and her estranged husband, Paul Snider. Paul murdered Dorothy, aged 20 as she was developing her movie career. He then committed suicide.
Arcade besides pac man /ms Pac-Man and its sequels pac man jr, super Pac-Man and baby Pac-Man , really liked frogger, pitfall, burger time, rampage, and q Bert as well if we are going really old school.
Possibly my least favourite of theirs. Generally I was fond of their stuff: Love Action (I Believe In Love), Open Your Heart, Human, Mirror Man .... I liked those all much more. Mind you, The Lebanon had one of the clunkiest lines I've ever heard in a pop song ... ."And where there used to be some shops ..."
Phil Oakey didn't like this song. His favorite song on this album is "Seconds." A song about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. A musical snapshot of a dramatic event.
Music became more unserious in the eighties. A little more corny. It was too serious sometimes in the seventies. This song was kinda' disco but not bad.
All the 80s music had a greater impact as we witnessed it. Later generations may appreciate the music, but will never experience it like those that lived it. The transitions from 1977 to 1982 was perhaps the most dramatic change in music history. Much of this was due to changing technologies.
And it ruined music as we know it, more specifically as the 80's wore on and they took it too far
I think the 60's transition was even more extreme. Early 60's was still a continuation of the 50's sounds until the Beatles/British invasion hit...and then by 66/67, psychedelic and hard rock became significant.

This chorus couldn’t leave your mind if you tried, I remember as a kid when this came out after the repetition of “Don’t you want me baby” we would answer back Nooooooooo. Lol 😂
My favorite guys❤
Whenever someone says “I was working as a waitress” this song plays in my head 😂
You guys should play some Johnny Mathis only the best voice EVER
RAM JAM BLACK BETTY!!
My favorite video game was Space Ace.
The only memorable thing about this song is how creepy it is.
Whoo hoo! 🎉
I'm there too. Talk about it ❤
Keep Feeling Fascination! Post Haste!

The song is about Dorothy Stratten and her estranged husband, Paul Snider.
Paul murdered Dorothy, aged 20 as she was developing her movie career.
He then committed suicide.
Did not know that. Not a clue, actually. That story is seriously disturbing -- she had it all. What a whack job he was
Great fact. Didnt know that either

Another song about Dorothy Stratten.
@@BrimHawktwo movies were made about Dorothy Stratton too .. Star 80 and Diary of a Centerfold ( with Jamie Leigh Curtis as Dorothy)
Still have the LP.
Arcade besides pac man /ms Pac-Man and its sequels pac man jr, super Pac-Man and baby Pac-Man , really liked frogger, pitfall, burger time, rampage, and q Bert as well if we are going really old school.
Always enjoy watching you guys process these -- not my favorite Human League tune though.....like "Fascination" better.
Mine is one that rarely gets played……Life On Your Own….
This wasn't so much an arcade song; it was a roller skating rink song.
The Promise - When In Rome. You should review this song.
We had pinball machines, we didn't need no stinkin' video games, lol.
Please reaction to Dimash songs: Stranger, Ave Maria
Music became more unserious in the eighties. A little more corny. It was too serious sometimes in the seventies. This song was kinda' disco but not bad.
