MOLTO EBENE, EH! This has to be the finest performance of this quartet on video or sound file anywhere. The sound is so great, the blend, the phrasing! WOW! I love the violist!! I love them all!

Magnificent Quatuor Ebène! The quartet is the player that makes Fanny Mendelssohn melody resonate with the majestic sound of clarity and ripe sonority, The vibrant rhythm gives the magical charm to this composition. The Quatuor Ebène plays flawless and the tonality is awe - inspiring in quality.

She replied to her brother, as we would hope, with a similar criticism of a recent work of his! This is a fine piece. What wonderful music she could have written, given the proper opportunity! Best wishes, Philip Thonemann

Première fois que j´entends de la musique de Fany M. Quelle trempe! Il faut vraiment des artistes comme ceux-ci, avec du muscle au coeur et aux bras pour nous la transmettre avec tant de beautés. Merci à tous.

7:48 I love the violin 'duet' - they play it so well, that it just just sounds like one line...!

To think that Felix M. criticised his sister saying she was allowing herself freedoms in the Quartet which you could permit yourself if you were a completely accomplished composer. Her freer treatment of Sonata Form is one of the charms of this Quartet. It is completely coherent.

Perhaps, but Felix was also one of her most ardent supporters. He was absolutely devastated by her death. Criticism is not always negative. Mendolssohn would often consult with his sister over his works. I really love both Felix and and Fanny. I think you do him a disservice.

@@psycholinguist1 Totally agreeing with you ! And you can really feel that in his quartet op.80 in F minor, informally dedicated to his sister after she died : he abandons all pudeur and plunges in really dark feelings he almost never explores otherwise (at least not in the previous quartets).

@@RenardTaquin I listened to his Quartett in f minor and cried, it has such dark and sad emotions, and by that time I didn't know he wrote it after the death of his sister, so now it all makes sense, this masterpiece describes exactly the same feelings I had when my grandparents died. He must have liked her very much and composing this was probably his way to cope with it.

After having proved herself for years, she was granted the freedom to function as a professionel composer - only a couple of years before her premature death. One can but wonder what she would have accomplished if her life had been longer. Her talent was as strong - maybe stronger than that of her guardian brother.

@@psycholinguist1 - Yes, but he is definitely to be blamed for suppressing her profession as a musician, composer and public pianist. He often expresses love of her compositions but remains opposed to their publication to the bitter end. I can't remember everything, buit I think it was only after her death that he published some of her works. He was jealous and abided by his fathers absurd but rigorous rule that a woman's place is in the family. Read the biography of Fanny by Fraçoise Tillard; rhe damage that family did to Fanny is horrifying.
