- A German view after half a century on the military events at Stalingrad. German officers Witzland, Reiser and Rohleder, after successfully conducting operations in North Africa, enjoy the peace and beauty of Italy. At the end of their vacation, they are sent to the army under the command of Paulus and transferred to Stalingrad. After the silence and warmth of Italy, finding yourself in the hell of battle surrounded by Soviet troops is the most terrible thing you can imagine. The endless cold, the tightening ring of encirclement, the lack of basic living conditions did their job. Once brave German soldiers turn into an embittered rabble, ready to kill their own for a crust of bread. To try to escape from this nightmare, Reiser suggests pretending to be wounded and leaving the city on a medical plane...

The German soldier getting split in half by the T-34 at 22:58 haunted me for years. It was so horrific that my opa turned it off immediately when he saw it, he just couldn't bear it anymore. He was not at Stalingrad, but was in several major battles like Smolensk, the 3rd Battle of Kharkov, Kursk, and Caen. That was his final battle as he was wounded by air attack in July 1944 and surrendered to the Americans from his hospital bed in Munich at the end of the war.
What was his branch? Heer? Waffen SS? Or other?
@@imperialguardsman9867 He was an unteroffizier or Sergeant in a panzergrenadier regiment of the 2nd SS Panzer Division DasReich. When he had first joined the division in September 1940 he had considered it an honor to serve with such an elite unit, but as time went on he found himself very disillusioned with both the horrific combat he saw as well as the brutality in which it was fought. He wrote in his diary as early as April 1943 that he no longer believed in the war or that it could be won. Kursk was the proof, which he took part in just a few months later.

Both my Grandparents, 2 Cousins and 15 great Uncles (from both sides of my family), (my Paternal Grandmother was 1 of 16) fought in one branch or another. My Mothers Father who was in the Somerset light Infantry, fought under Montgomery in El Alamein, (mentioned in this film) against Rommel. At the end of the conflict my Fathers Father who served in the REME was a guard at Neremburg, he had nothing good to say about those prosecuted for war crimes, obviously, but the German soldier, he said was just like us. I wish i had recorded my familys exploits during both world wars when most were still alive, all fascinating and some sad and quite horrific. Knowing him as well as i did, my Grandfather would have liked to have met your Opa, He could seem brusque to those who didn't know him, and to many who did, he had no time for fools. Good Men on all sides paid a huge price for a War most did not want. God Bless them all. And in these times, us as well. Peace and love.
Both of my grandfathers fought in WW2 in the Wehrmacht. Both returned totally disillusioned. They spoke very little about the war, but if questioned they talked. A little. Gruesome stories.
But their clear message was strict and they repeated it time and time again: "Never again!"
Our todays politicians on both side of all these conflicts should watch this video and then being put into a single room without food until they hammer out a proper peace-deal. Be it Ukraine/Russia, PR China/Taiwan, Palestinians/Israelis.
Now, for anyone trying to tell me that "his" side is the "good" side - no, I do not believe you a single bit. All of todays military conflicts are/were avoidable.
The arrogancy because of someone's own religion, nationality, skin colour or whatever is never a reason to fight or to go to war. I am sick and tired of it.
I served in the East-German armed forces as a tank commander from 1983-1986 when the cold war was at its peak being fuelled by both sides. In 1990 me, a tank lieutenant i.R., resigned from ANY military service, being an absolute convinced pacifist ever since. The propaganda on both sides during the cold war was absolutely equal with the same thing happens now again in 2024. For me, the only heroes are the young men on any war side, who are trying to escape draft or military service in any conflict. They are the only ones who understood, that war is not right and WILL NOT resolve anything.
The bad Russians, the evil Ukrainians, the fascist Israel, violence-loving Palestinians, nasty Chinese Commies and traitorous renegade Taiwanese.... I cannot listen to this primitive indeed evil labelling of people and nations any longer.
This permanent demonizing of people just because they are on the "other" side makes me so angry and that people time and time still fall for this crazy bullshit again.
I travelled all continents for 30years in my job as a German engineer, I know most of the regions I mentioned, I even lived in some for a longer period of time.
There are no bad peoples or nations. There are only lousy government wanting us all to hate each other. War is never the answer!

You're correct. I trained in the infantry for 2.5 years and I'm convinced that surviving is in great part a matter of luck. Shrapnel or automatic fire are not personal. And you've to deal with officers' stupid decision.

I agree with you. I was a cold-war soldier on the other side of the fence in 1983-86, being a T55-tank commander in East-Germany. Although and thankfully I never went into combat, I realized later that all the propaganda to make us hate each other on both sides were almost 100% identical. What is the difference between "For peace and freedom!" or "For peace and socialism!"? What f..g hollow words, going to war for peace?
In 1990, now being a tank-lieutenant i.R., I resigned from any military service and since then I am a convinced pacifist. I have friends in the PR China and Taiwan, I have friends in Russia and the US (incl. Vietnam-veterans). I have veteran friends of the NVA (East-German army) and veteran friends from the Bundeswehr. I lost a Russian friend, my age, who burnt in his military truck in Afghanistan.
My grandfathers fought the Red Army and Western allies in WW2, I lost my grand-grandfather on the 3rd day of WW1 in France and I myself wasted probably the best 3 years of my life for this military BS instead of getting myself a nice education, a few beers too much and chasing girls.
Both of my grandfathers, the Wehrmacht-veterans, told me precisely the same thing as you wrote: there is no glory in battle. Just screams, blood, shit, fear, pissed trousers and senseless blind brutality on both sides. Which is why they reminded me time and time again: NEVER AGAIN!
We, the now veterans of these meaningless hot and nasty cold wars must remind our politicians relentlessly to do anything in their power to avoid and end war immediately.
I do not want to fight Americans or Russians or Chinese or Taiwanese or Israelis or Palestinians or .... and you know why? Because the vast majority of these people are kind, open-hearted and basically nice human beings.
Furthermore and besides the still increasingly more "efficiency" of modern weaponry, there are no more gains in military fighting, only losers, dead people, suffering and destruction is left, plus democracy was never established as a result as well.
Time to do better! Diplomacy now!

PS: The one friend of mine in the US served as a commander of one of these little armed boats doing patrolling on Vietnamese rivers. He lost a few comrades ("buddies" in his language). Sometimes we discussed it, but he never told anything being somewhat "glory". But I do not know which unit he was. For you: I served in the PB1 (first tank battalion) of the MSR28 (infantry regiment No. 28) in Rostock on the Baltic coastline, a "Close-Border-Unit" with permanent high combat readiness level, knowing we would be the first ones to die if the cold war would get hot.
One of the most cruel things in the full movie is that our main characters' unit was posted in beautiful Italy before being sent to the "ass end of the world" as the Germans liked to refer to russia.
Hilarious not - and of course just the sort of 'piss on all Russians' stuff people seem to love these days. Bound to make reconciliation after Putin's sick war in Ukraine just that bit easier you think? But maybe that's not on your radar as something we might all benefit from.

This movie is a masterpiece. It shows what war really is. A total nightmare. On the Frontlines, it doesn't matter if you are standing at the right or left side. You are just a piece of meat.

An essential remake of "Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben", 1959, but up-to-date cinematics and glorious gore make it even more despondent by the end.
I saw this before finding the older one; both are pretty intense, but this is superb in the ugliness of war.

Фильм о войне - человеческой трагедии, о том, как выживают и гибнут. Без цензуры. О том, что нельзя было допустить её повторения спустя 100 лет !!!
Так же и с паровозами в фильмах,едут по путям с железобетонными шпалами.

In Mont Cassino, and to defend Italy the germans had two divisions. In USSR they had 200! This defines how diferent were the west and east campaigns.
Red army ddfeated 507 german divisions and over 100 germain allies in the eastern front. Film is full rubbish.
I don't know how true this information is. I know one thing, that the Americans and the English confronted 10 divisions of Germans with their whole army. The Russians confronted 200 divisions of Germans Can you imagine what 1 division is? A division is several regiments. Numbering from 4,500 to 22,000. A division has: tank artillery infantry regiments, sometimes aviation. The division commander is a major general. Several divisions are a corps. Can consist of at least 40,000+ people and equipment.

The Russians never confronted 200 german divisions. Russians has 176 divisions in the 1st strategic echelon and about 46 in the second one. About 4 million total. Each Russian division was about 12,000 men. Its commander could be a Major General or a Colonel.
Divisions were DIFFERENT between armies, operations and the time of the war.

В этом отрывке известного фильма показаны Т-34/85 чешского производства послевоенного выпуска. Но на качество самого фильма, это конечно не влияет, фильм не плох, лучше чем одноименный фильм Ф. Бондарчука.

Если в фильме Бондарчука солдаты отчаяния бились и погибали за защиту своей родины, что вызывает уважение их подвигу, то в этом фильме непонятно за что убивают и гибнут эти агрессоры и их совсем не жаль, а хочется, чтобы их всех раскатали. Но это не по их сценарию. Их зачем-то пытаются показать героями, но выглядит это противно. И сюжет и съёмки так себе, ничего такого-то, набор штампов😏

My Grandmother, my Mom (2) and my auntie (7th Birthday) were running for their lives in spring 1945 losing everything they possessed due to the collapsing and burning of the apartment block in Friedrichstadt, a suburb of Dresden. It was the last bombing of my hometown by Anglo-American air forces before the Nazis surrendered to the Red Army and the Western allies.
Today we have friends in the USA, the UK, Russia, the Netherlands, from Poland, the Czech Republic and many more countries and even some French I am considering friends.
In 1990 me and my brother visited an old Russian retiree lady who invited us to stay and be hosted at her small apartment house in Moscow for two weeks. She was taking care of us like we would have been her own sons. Buying grocery even in Moscow was a nightmare during this period already but when we came to her apartment in the evening after the sightseeing tours, the table was bending. Same for the breakfast.
On the very last day we gathered all our courage and asked her about the small b/-photo in her living room displaying a small Red-Army uniformed petite young lady waving two flags in front of some heavy artillery pieces. It was her, commanding an artillery platoon in WW2, virtually fighting our grandfather at the same time at the gates of Moscow. She would not have said a single word if we would not have asked her.
Every sincere German knows, who was responsible for this war and who started the extreme brutalisation of it through air, on land and sea and by the means of "special police" and camps in occupied territories.
I raised my kids to clearly understand that the people who were responsible for these atrocities were no one else than the German Nazis.
So, we here needed to forgive our ex-enemies for three important reasons: First, it was OUR national leadership who brainwashed MY grandparents generation. Second, it is necessary to cut this stupid cycle of handing down hatred, nationalistic or religious or whatever arrogancy into the next generation; otherwise the same stupid brutality cycle keeps continuing throughout our lives. We all certainly have better thing to do than to take revenge. Third: we Germans still appreciate that the other nations gave us a second chance after WW2, particular after "all what WE did to the OTHERS" as my grandfather, an ex-Wehrmacht-fighter, told his grandchild - me.
Today we need to be aware of any hate-speech, which is creeping up everywhere again, regardless of the language.

T34 didn't get destroyed that way, with Molotov cocktail. Finns destroy much T 26 and others with Molotov Cocktail, but it should throw bacside - not frontside.

Don't miss also "The thin red Line" about the battle of Guadalcanal.

I know books aren’t usually mentioned here, but if you come across a copy of Janusz Piekalkiewicz’ “Moscow 1941- The Frozen Offensive”, c1981 it depicts what the German and Russian forces had already experienced a year earlier. There are several comparisons made to Napoleon’s 1812 campaign.

Einer der besten Antikriegsfilme über den 2. Weltkrieg (- für mich direkt nacht Das Boot), den ich damals im Kino gesehen habe und unzählige Male danach.
Irgendwann Nachts lief auf Arte oder 3Sat mal eine längere und (noch) brutalere Fassung, von der ich weder davor, noch danach je wieder etwas gehört oder gesehen habe. (Man merkte den nachträglich eingefügten Szenen an, dass sie nicht so professionell herausgearbeitet waren, wie der Rest des Films.)
Ich denke, es ist immer noch sehenswert🤝🫡

Сталинградской битвы не было бы если бы Сталин не располагал столько резервов под Москвой, так как он предполагал что новый удар будет снова на Москву! тем самым юг России был менее защищён, теперь представьте юг России, а это бескайние просторы степи... танками очень просто прорваться оборону и быстро продвигатся до естественной преграды, в данном случае великая река Волга!... после стягиванихя резервов и снятия армии с востока всё перешло в инициативу русских...
If Paulus had an inch of sense or real command ability the battle would never have happened the tanks reached Stalingrad when there was no defence if Paulus had ordered the tanks to advance through the city and over the bridges to the other side of the Volga that would have been it. Instead he kept the tanks out of the city waiting for enough infantry to catch up and only then a whole week later did 6th army enter Stalingrad as Russian troops were entering the city and the rest is history, Paulus was a good administrative officer and a very poor combat commander.

Немцы не пальцем были сделаны и маскировку своих планов делали и дезу засылали...так что рекомендую - Изучите более углублённо эту тему, а заодно и контр наступление РККА зимы-весны 1941-42 годов + битвы за Ржев, конечно про Блау, Сталинград и Кавказ... Очень хорошо всё разбирает историк Алексей Исаев, наверное лучшие лекции о данных событиях...

He was a very good administrative officer but lacked the instinct for combat which was noted by many officers who served under him he wouldn't take a chance always delaying until everything was in place which is okay if your being routinely resupplied but after the 6th army was encircled it accelerated the defeat and prevented him from attempting to breakout a fatal decision.
