Chained Echoes Is More Than Just an Homage (JRPG Review)

- Chained Echoes is the most enjoyable JRPG I've played in years. It's more than just an homage to 90s JRPGs; it's genuinely great.
Even with my nitpicking, I had a ton of fun with this game. It's definitely on my list to replay in a few years, possibly before the sequel, if that happens. I'd like to do a deeper analysis of this game and its systems.

One of my top 5 JRPGs period
I still can't believe how good this game is. It eliminated basically every friction point I have with JRPGs and kept just about everything I like.

This game was almost perfect, one thing I didn't like was the number of characters and when they were introduced. You could have two teams of four, so having more than 8 characters was a misstep. I think it would have been better if some of the worse character were dropped and that time given to developing the remaining characters more.
The other thing I didn't like was the weapon upgrading and crystal system. By the time you upgraded a weapon you would just get a new one making the old one obsolete, but you couldn't just remove the crystals you have and slot them in the new weapon and keep going because that was locked to specific smithing stations. I think that upgrading weapons so they are equal to the next "better weapon" while making it impossible to swap crystals immediately turned discovering a new weapon a chore instead of an exciting gameplay moment. It would have been nice if the weapons got more and more crystal slots.
Other than that I cannot deny this game was truly special.
I agree with you on character count. In almost all RPGs, I'd rather have fewer characters with more development time and plot events for each one. The unique elements battle-wise did help here, but 3 of the last 4 characters I got didn't really have time to shine or build a really crucial role in my team. I'm not even against optional characters, I'd just have more members of the main cast die or leave the party.
Still, I can understand the thrill of making your first big project and just throwing it all in there. This game had way more content than I thought it would for a largely one-man project and he did stick the landing on most excessive things.
I do wish the weapon upgrades had more to them than just, same-thing-with-higher-numbers. Each tier's stat numbers just go in straightforward order for the most part. That probably made the game easy to balance, but it really dampened the excitement over finding a new weapon.
I'm excited for the DLC and may do a new game plus before I play it.
So when is a crosscode video coming??
In recent years crosscode and chained echoes have been amazing
i wish i could say the same about sea of stars but it was not something as spectacular as these two
Crosscode and chained echoes are genre defining imo
*Crosscode is high in my pipeline.*
Funny enough, I bought Crosscode a few months back after really enjoying the demo and took Sea of Stars off my wishlist after its demo didn't hold my attention outside of its artstyle. So we may have overlapping taste.
I'm also gearing up for a video on Triangle Strategy after a new game plus, but no idea when I'll start that.
@@DiurMulapu Always excited for new crosscode content!! subbed so i dont miss it.
