    I met Dick Best back in the 90’s. He was the second dauntless dive bomber pilot on the Akagi. What an incredible moment to be in his presence. He spoke like it had happen the day before. His mind was so sharp. At that time he was in his mid 80’s.....

      Wow, what an honor! So few of my heroes from WW2 are still alive. I met the navigator from the B-25 that landed in Russia after the Doolittle raid at an air show 20 years ago. I also got to take a ride on the B-17 Nine O' Nine that day, unforgettable experience. I was saddened by its crashing in Connecticut.

    Akagi, originally designed as Amagi class battlecruiser. But due to Washington naval treaty She was halted and converted into a standart aircraft carrier. The most notable characteristic from her original design is the hull. Same goes to Kaga whence She was also originally designed to be the Tosa class battleship

    One interesting thing about Japanese carriers like the Akagi is they were not designed as aircraft carriers from the keel up, but rather cruisers which were converted with the flat top design to accommodate flight operations at sea. The Akagi itself was laid down as an Amagi-class cruiser.

    Beautiful model. Well done. The one thing that really stands out looking at the detailed 3d model, is how little Anti-Aircraft defenses she had, and how poorly positioned they were. No wonder high angle of attack dive bombers were able to so savage the Japanese Carriers, while the low Torpedo planes got picked off. It looks like there is a broad AA blind spot that is directly over the ship. So many of her heavier higher altitude guns were obscured from upward firing angles by being below and partially under the flight deck.

    Why does it look like that because almost 35 years ago a friend needed a favor .
    He brought me a car load of 1:720 th scale ships . Well by the time I was done I had pretty much rebuilt the entire Imperial Japanese Navy over 134 ships altogether from the I -19 class that shelled the coastline oilfields in California to the aircraft carriers that bombed Pearl Harbor .
    This guy latter informed me that all of the ships were scanned into a Imaging computer .
    I don't know what they were used for but I was asked to put as much detail that I could .
    That's why I think this is a 1:350 th scale model that was scanned that and there's a lot of under deck detail that matches the model .

    So jetzt mal hier zum gezeigten Modell. Das ist echt Wahnsinn. Die Details sind atemberaubend. Hier sieht man auch deutlich warum der Schornstein zur Seite geneigt ist und ca 45 Grad gebogen. Das diente dazu um die Abgase nach unten und neben dem Schiff abzuleiten und durch den Sog der entstand erst wieder hinter dem Schiff aufsteigen zu lassen. Zudem war es eine Quelle weniger für evtl Kollisionen beim Landen. Dann diese Musik dazu.... Gänsehaut!!

    The flaw i noticed on this design is by having cannons built all along the side of the aircraft carrier and the ammo needed for these weapons added tremendous weight to her, weight that could've been better added to armor deck pleating or more airplanes. The use of these cannons were insignificant as by these times the aircraft were doing all the damage at such close and far range, you wouldn't be able to get within range to use those cannons without the aircraft getting at you first.

      Mark Solarz Yes it is. The Japanese Navy knows as first Nation the Potential of Aircraft Carriers. Here you see the Result. The Akagi was first build as an Oil Tanker. But then they build an Aircraft Carrier from that Ship. Next Generation was the Hiryu and Soryu. And the Shokaku and the Zuikaku was the Best Carriers in the Japanese Navy

    • @Slicksterzz
      @Slicksterzz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Akagi was originally laid down as a battlecruiser, not a tanker. A tanker wouldn't have had her speed, nor been that large.

    • @nogisonoko5409
      @nogisonoko5409 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) Catapult is not needed for an aircraft carrier.
      2)She is literally a converted battlecruiser,so she got some armour on it. Also, putting an armoured deck will just violated the Washington Naval Treaty at that time.
      3) Radar is developed in 1941 by British, and it just mastered after the end of 1943. So it is impossible for Japanese to installed radar on pre-WW2 build.

      It was the Royal Navy that pioneered just about every advance in aircraft carriers - the first carrier from a converted hull, the first purpose built carrier, hangar lifts, armoured flight decks, landing mirrors, angled flight decks, steam catapults (I think) and the so called "ski jump" for VTOL jump jets.

    • @milky55way2012
      @milky55way2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually nice try......when did Japan use angled flight decks? Steam catapults were invented by the British. Japan has no jump jets that I know of. @@maconescotland8996

    Fly United or ANA and watch "Eternal Zero" it's a better CG Akagi than the Yamato battleship movie. The "hero" is a expert Zero pilot who survives Pearl Harbor and Midway, ends up tasked with escorting kamikaze who get shot down before they can score a hit, frustrated the *spoiler* is that volunteers because he has the skill to evade AA fire and the 5 American's in the credits are the voices of sailors who spot the incoming Zero and swearing like crazy as it's about to hit.
