I met Dick Best back in the 90’s. He was the second dauntless dive bomber pilot on the Akagi. What an incredible moment to be in his presence. He spoke like it had happen the day before. His mind was so sharp. At that time he was in his mid 80’s.....

Wow, what an honor! So few of my heroes from WW2 are still alive. I met the navigator from the B-25 that landed in Russia after the Doolittle raid at an air show 20 years ago. I also got to take a ride on the B-17 Nine O' Nine that day, unforgettable experience. I was saddened by its crashing in Connecticut.

Akagi, originally designed as Amagi class battlecruiser. But due to Washington naval treaty She was halted and converted into a standart aircraft carrier. The most notable characteristic from her original design is the hull. Same goes to Kaga whence She was also originally designed to be the Tosa class battleship

Beautiful model. Well done. The one thing that really stands out looking at the detailed 3d model, is how little Anti-Aircraft defenses she had, and how poorly positioned they were. No wonder high angle of attack dive bombers were able to so savage the Japanese Carriers, while the low Torpedo planes got picked off. It looks like there is a broad AA blind spot that is directly over the ship. So many of her heavier higher altitude guns were obscured from upward firing angles by being below and partially under the flight deck.

Wait why does Akagis hull looks like a cruiser?

Originally she was supposed to be an Amagi class Battlecruiser, but was turned into an Aircraft Carrier instead.

She was originally planned as a battlecruiser but due to Washington Naval Treaty she was converted to an aircraft carrier

    This looks like a 1/350 scale model that's been scanned into a 3 - D app.
Why does it look like that because almost 35 years ago a friend needed a favor .
He brought me a car load of 1:720 th scale ships . Well by the time I was done I had pretty much rebuilt the entire Imperial Japanese Navy over 134 ships altogether from the I -19 class that shelled the coastline oilfields in California to the aircraft carriers that bombed Pearl Harbor .
This guy latter informed me that all of the ships were scanned into a Imaging computer .
I don't know what they were used for but I was asked to put as much detail that I could .
That's why I think this is a 1:350 th scale model that was scanned that and there's a lot of under deck detail that matches the model .

With that funnel hanging over the side it must have sucked having your GQ station in one of the after gun mount stations.

I am a big fan of Akagi, Kaga my favorite, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku. Odd looking, but interesting to know the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy are the only 2 Navys in military history to have fought 5 Naval Air Battles without the opposing fleets ever having sighted each other.

beautiful rendering. she was an historically important ship, though the Steel of which she was made knew no malice of any man, putting aside the horrible capability she (and other weapons of war) are built for, she has lovely lines to her hull, and a stout resolute structure made for her task. a great ship of a seafaring people, she met her end with honor, lying on the seabed in proximity to the Yorktown. she with her sisters dead along with those of our Yorktown im sure create some great discussions on the Elysian Fields. a drink in their collective honor now and i will post...

I hope you plan to do this with the other three carriers lost at Midway, then the Yamato and Musashi.
