    I watched this video a year and a half ago after I got my first button put in. I was so nervous because it was really uncomfortable and didn't feel like it was fitting right. Within a month, it started to adjust and feel way better. I had a new one put in today because I'm losing my health insurance and I want to start fresh. For anybody who is watching this and freaking out-- please know it IS scary but it will be OKAY! It hurt so bad for the first week or two, so badly I wanted to take it out. My ENT convinced me to wait a couple more weeks and I'm so glad I did. It's not for everybody, but it has made my breathing and nose so much more comfortable. They come in several sizes now. Make sure you get the right size! Just relax, and know that if you don't like it, you can take it out. But don't stress yourself out over whether or not it's going to work for you before you try it.

    Glad to have found this video - so sorry it didn't help! I just wanted you to know that I got a septum button inserted over 1 month ago and like you I have decided to take it out. My perforation was also small and it didn't bother me too much but thought if I could cover the hole it would have to be better. Well my button is a tight fight and in the day time it feels great and I have no issues but once I lie down to sleep my nose gets totally congested and I wake up all night long from snoring (which I didn't do before the button). My ENT gave me a nose spray to help at night which I started almost 2 weeks ago and that seems to make it worse and has really dried out my nose. So I made an appointment to have mine taken out as well. I long to sleep again through the night. Sorry it didn't work for you but glad to have found someone else that has decided to take out the button as well! :)

    Thanks for the video. The ENT wanted to put one in but I was afraid it would block up my nose that was already giving me issues feeling like it was plugged constantly. I left it. I actually ended up making it bigger by picking the crust and blood clots out. Thankfully, I haven't had any issues with bleeding. I used to have nose bleeds at least a couple of times a week before the hole was created. They weren't as severe as yours, thankfully. They would stop after a few min. Now, I barely get any blood on the tissue when I blow my nose. It's actually gotten to the size that I can breath clearly now. Sometimes it gets a little painful, like a brain freeze in really cold weather but other than that, I can finally breathe clearly with the hole better than I ever could without it. It also stays clear instead of plugging right up after clearing it out. I have had a constant post-nasal drip for many, many years. Way before the hole. The allergist stated that it's called Non-Allergenic Chronic Sinusitis where my sinuses are inflamed even when there is no allergen causing it. It could be what's keeping my nose moistened so that it doesn't bleed. So, I guess it's a good thing to have it, even though the constant drainage is annoying.
    Your experience and others I've seen tells me that I made the right decision to not put one in. I hope things continue to be manageable for you and you can at least have some comfort.
    There are surgeries to graft a piece of cartilage into the hole to plug it but you have to find a surgeon that has done that kind of work before as it's extremely delicate work in an extremely small space. That might be something that might help you though. It's not for me since, like I mentioned, I breathe better with it than without it. I hope you stay healthy and safe, with this CoViD-19 issue going on.

    Thanks for the useful video and comments. I have had a septal button since 2005. I often get horrible obstructive crusting emerging from under it which I have to pick out. I have saline douche which helps soften it up to get it out but sometimes its not available and I'm too lazy to get it before picking it out. Now I have a long lasting cough & cold that's taking ages to pass and I wonder if its all infected behind the button resulting in a constant load on my immune system and why the cold and endless mucous just takes ages and ages to pass. It happened 7 years ago too and developed into fever and hypoxia and I was hospitalised for 3 days with broad spectrum antibiotics then the cough, cold and fever finally passed. I don't think I told them about the button. My button fits well unlike yours but now I'm wondering if I should get it removed and sterilised and the perforation cleaned up before re-insertion of it (or a new one) (to cure the infection which I believe may be under it). I have read there's an alternative of grafting new cartilage to repair the perforation and that of course has the advantage that it becomes incorporated into the body and blood supply and immune system so no foreign body in your nose which can get infected under it and mucous crusting emerge from under it. I shall go to the national health here in the UK (free) but I may end up having to go for private treatment for a timely solution. Thanks again for taking the time & trouble to record the video.

    On March 11th - 2020, I saw my doctor because I'd been having problems breathing. There was a small hole in my septum. The next day I woke up feeling sick. A week later I was diagnosed with COVID-19. Over a year later and I'm still feeling very ill. By July, when I finally was given an appointment with an ENT, my septum was completely gone. I saw her again in December 2020. A follow-up to the July appointment. Things had gotten worse as it was now going into the bone. I was offered the button surgery. I met with a surgeon who explained to 2 types offered here. The end result, no surgery due to the problems I would have after. There is a surgeon in Orange County, Los Angeles who has performed incredible septum surgeries. I wish I had the money to go to the States and have him take care of mine. I am 64 years old and scared that I will end up in the hospital unable to communicate the problems I have with my nose. Plus, keeping it clean is freaking gross!! I hope you are doing better now. Thank you for posting this.

    I had a magnetic septum button installed three years ago after a hole in my septum caused many issues to include crusting, problems sleeping , whistling sounds, constant bleeding. I tried a regular septum button and continued to have issues so had it removed. Since I had the magnetic septum button installed, symptoms have been reduced greatly. I would recommend it! Note that with a magnetic septum button, you need to have the button removed if you have an MRI. I hope this helps.

    I had surgery for a deviated septum over 20 years ago and it was a bit of a hack job (I've been subsequently examined by other ENT surgeons and, although they try to be discrete it's pretty obvious they're not impressed with the job) Instead of going under the surface and removing the cartilage underneath as I have seen done on TH-cam he just removed everything on the surface of the right nostril, including the cilia, tiny hairs that push mucus back to the throat - basically bored a hole! A recent examination showed that I have also developed a perforation in the septum which I have to say doesn't really bother me.
    I am very sensitive to dryness and have had frequent bleeding ever since the surgery. I frequently snort water up that nostril and that helps (I can do that without the usual discomfort because the nerves, cells or whatever that register the discomfort are no longer there).
    Recently I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and got a CPAP machine which has a mask that fits over your nose and it pumps air to keep the nasal passages open. The machine has a small reservoir where you put fresh distilled water every night so the air is cool and moist. It has really helped.

    Sorry it was a bad experience for you. I had surgery over a year ago and it caused a septal perforation. I have had problems ever since the surgery. I have read that a perforation can cause a this, but I also know that they operated on my turbinates and that can also cause a loss of sensation where the person cannot sense air flow through their nose. It's called empty nose syndrome. Whatever other problems you have with your nose, I would warn you to never let them operate on your turbinates.

    I can’t have a button put in my nose because the hole in my nose is the size of a quarter! I’m devastated! Not due to the fact I can’t have the surgery but because I can’t breathe, my nose bleeds often, it hurts to wear my glasses, my ears hurt and I have migraines. My ENT said to flush my nose 3 times a day, I due it once, and insert a pearl size of Vaseline into my nose twice daily. I bought a humidifier and run it 24/7. My nose is on the verge of collapsing and that scares the hell out of me.
    There are things that can cause this perforated septum none of which I’ve entertained except for prescription steroids nose spray, I stopped using them then this hole was discovered. Approximately 1 and an half years ago.
    I’d appreciate any feedback that is constructive. Thank you

    • @ShannonLandsberger

      Diana Bucher: I would start by getting a second opinion. Your doctor or ENT may be good, but may not be up on the most recent practices in the field. They do have methods of surgery to try to patch the area and I believe that depending on the specific location of the hole that even a quarter-size hole is a possibility for a button still.

    • @mariahtarna3502
      @mariahtarna3502 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diana I am so sorry about what you’re going through. I have a perforated septum as well, and an appointment coming up to take care of it. In the meantime, I found a way to ease the whistling sound. I use “blemish patches.” They’re used for blemishes/pimples, but I’ve placed it over the hole on my septum and so far it’s been incredibly relieving. I hope this tip helps a bit.

    • @ShannonLandsberger
      @ShannonLandsberger  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe another user had commented that there is now a magnetic version of this which can be cut to a more custom sized peace and likely be a better fit. As for my own solution, I run two humidifiers in the house during the winter to keep the house humid enough that it is not really a problem overall, and I generally try to take a steamy shower twice a day. that generally takes care of most of my issues. If it does get kind of bad I will occasionally use Vaseline or something similar to moisten the area for a day or two so that it can heal. I have accepted that this will be what I end up living with. It doesn't really bother me a much in the summer spring or fall, the winter is the main problem. Adapting to things in life is just part of getting older. I have low back issues and neck issues which caused me more problems than this does, so in terms of life affecting things, this is fairly low on the list.

    Sorry you had so much trouble! I have a large perforation that was was causing horrible problems and decided to try a button. Mine is made of two silicon pieces that have magnets in them to hold them together. The fit is tight and there is very little discomfort (which I suspect will disappear once I get used to something foreign being in there). My breathing improved immediately upon insertion and my dryness is improving as well. I don’t know if maybe you’ve heard of the magnetic button since you filmed this, but if not, it might be something to consider.

      The ENT used some numbing spray and then moved each half up into each nostril with his fingers and then the magnets found each other and it came together. It was only slightly uncomfortable. He is in a city 5 hours away from where I live, so he said I could find a local ENT willing to take it out if needed, or I could do it myself, which is what he actually prefers. He said that if I can get used to doing it myself I can take it out and clean it periodically and then put it back in. I’ll just need to get ahold of the edges, pull them apart to break the magnetic hold, and then pull them out. My perforation is towards the bottom of my nose though - with yours being higher it might be tough to get to. Still, if you had an ENT close by they could do it easily with instruments. The reason I found your video is because I was searching for others who have a magnetic button. I had read stories of people having lots of trouble with buttons in the past and wondered if what I’m experiencing is just a fluke. The ENT did say that he is seeing much better tolerance of this type of button than what he used to put in (the type you had) though. I didn’t realize how bad my breathing was. The relief of breathing better was instantaneous! I had this perforation for several years with no symptoms, but then I had sinus surgery and the surgeon took out way too much tissue. That, in combination with the perforation, led to lots of issues. Hopefully this will continue to help me, and maybe it could help you too.
