    One of the best places to visit in Bulgaria is the open air ethnographic museum, Etar (or Etara) near Gabrovo Bulgaria! We stopped in along our Bulgarian road trip to see some local ethnography. Near the center of Bulgaria, Etara displays traditional crafts of the Bulgarian people in action amid very beautiful nature! We also touch on where to stay in Gabrovo and show one of the yummiest breads in the world, another taste of Bulgaria, as we continue to travel in Bulgaria! And, as we always do in each country we are visiting, we answer to the question, is Bulgaria cheap?

    Great video, this was one of my favorite places to visit when I was little. It's a lot livelier when its warm, but still feels authentic. For anyone wondering the song in the video is indeed Bulgarian and it is about a rebel fighting for Bulgaria's independence, and the singer is asking him to leave the rebellion because his mother is sick and tired of all of it. Anyway, thank you for your videos, I really like your style. They're informative and I like that you seem genuinely interested in the places you visit. I wish you well and hope you can get to travel again soon!

      Thank you so much for watching our videos and for your comment! We value your support. 😇 Nice to hear the insight about this song--it is very moving, that is why we chose it. We were so pleasantly surprised by our wonderful time in Bulgaria; we look forward to visiting during a different season in the future! Thanks; we are missing our travels so much right now. We hope you are well wherever in the world you are right now 😊

    Hi, a great video. We are originally from the UK and after 10 years in India we moved here 5 years ago. We have a guest house just outside Veliko Tarnovo in beautiful countryside and we often come here with our guests. It is especially great in the summer to have a picnic beside the little stream.

    I was trying to work out if you were driving or not for the intro as I so would have crashed if I was doing that hahaha 😂 I need to 100% concentrate on something as I cannot multi-task. Is that a Bulgarian song in the background? The museum is very interactive which is cool. I think I'd find that more interesting to see people creating the crafts than just reading about it and seeing some examples. Entrance price was reasonable! April is so full of information. Impressive! Like a personal tour guide, hehe :) Your guesthouse owners seem nice and it's great they made a homemade breakfast for you.

    My father's family is from Gabrovo-Tarnovo region. Next time you go there ask if you can see in an ethnographic museum the female traditional clothing from this particular region. You'll feel like a Medieval princess. It's amazing to see and feel. The story goes, and nobody knows how true it is, given the lost history after the Ottoman invasion, but it's said that when the Second Bulgarian empire fell, the boyars and rich people who were not killed or didn't convert ran in the towns and villages around this region and the women kept the tradition of the old clothing, to remind them who they are. It's a nice story 😁 but the clothes are amazing indeed.

    The music you used in this video was pretty epic! The village looks really cool and chill.. It didn't look like they were trying to do the hard sell on the crafts like other tourist "villages" that we have been too.. Do people live there as well? $34 with breakfast for 2 sounds like an awesome deal! That bread looked so good! Was it a sweet bread?

      We were there when it was quiet, so we are not sure if they try to give a harder sell in the busier times. I do not think so; they are mostly showing off their craft-work. I do not believe people live onsite here, but live nearby in the mountains. It was not super sweet, it actually had cheese in it, but it was not savory either...Wayne is drooling for more of it now, hahaha!

      Petko, you, captain
      Petko1 , you, captain
      Petko, you, commander,
      Come home, Petko, quit!

      Of this damn rebellion2
      Your mother has enough.
      Your mother has enough.

      Petko, you, captain
      Petko, you, commander,
      Come home, Petko, quit!

      Of this damn rebellion
      Your mother has enough.
      Your mother has enough.

      In a daytime bringing of water;
      In the nights washing blood-stained shirts;
      Hiding hero's heads3

      Mother, you, my old mother,
      I have sent a traveler's bag
      To Stambula4, the big city.

      And when the traveler's bag come back
      And depending what news it will bring,
      Then I'll quit
      This damn rebellion!

      1.The song is dedicated to a Bulgarian national hero Captain Petko, the voevod: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petko_Voyvoda. He took part in Garibaldi's commands as well
      2.The national liberation activity in Bulgaria against the Turk slavery is known as Хайдутско движение (Hajduk rebellion). Petko was known as one of the most famous leaders of a hajduk squad (something as guerilla fighters) and maybe the only one who has survived to see the Liberation of Bulgaria.
      3.This could be a double meaning. On one hand it could be literally hiding severed heads of caught hajduks, placed on the village square as an example for the people to not take this rebellion path. Doing so, one day these heads could be buried and the graves would be known for the next generations. On the other hand could be hiding hajduks from Turks posses, sent to catch them.
