Genesis of Cyprus: The Island's Birth Story

Let's take a look at the island from a height of 30 km.
You see a mountain range in the north of the island called the Kyrenia Mountains. It's not just mountains! This is the edge of the Eurasian tectonic plate that has come out of the ground!
90 million years ago there was a sea here. Due to the approach of the African plate to the Eurasian one, in the space between them at the bottom of the sea, the Troodos volcano was formed, which gradually erupted underwater and filled the bottom with lava.
The plates continued to converge and the African plate began to sink under the volcano, pushing it up, because of which Troodos first formed a small island
Under the onslaught of the African Plate, the edge of the Eurasian Plate bent up and went out along with the surrounding seabed. We are now observing this region in the form of the Kyrenia mountain range, strewn from above with layers of the former seabed. And it's incredible!
