187 is code for murder! It used to be used in a lot of rap songs, back in my day. It's cop code, criminal justice code for a murder. So, the rappers/others who used it, were basically saying, “I'm going to talk to you on YOUR terms. I'm going to use your speech against you!" Which, was really cool!! It was another form of wordplay, really. As well as being a social statement against racist cops, and against cops criminalizing the things that people, minorities in particular, had to do in order to survive, because lack of fair opportunities. It was a very powerful thing!!! I hadn't watched one of your videos in a while, and it's good to see that y'all are still as crazy as ever!! Of course, I love seeing people get into music from different eras, it really widens your musical experience!! A lot of my favorite music is from other areas of music, ages, etc than many would think, and it really enriches my life in many ways!! But, having been born in the early 80s, I'll always love the music from the 90s and 2000s, in particular! Not to say that some of my favorite bands, songs, artist, etc. aren't from before or after then, but I just have a soft spot for the music from that time, in general. Our rap was really at it's apex, it's prime, though, lmao!! Thus far, anyway!! Not to say the newer rap hasn't brought some good shit to the game too, because it has..... In fits and starts, lol!! A few of today's artist are some of my all-time favs too. I'm open to try almost any music!!! My limit is at purposeful hateful speech, without a good reason!! I go from mellow to “thrashasus" 🤣, that's what a Cousin of mine termed my core taste in music!! What can I say? I love a lot of hardcore music!!
    Take Care of Yourselves,
    Amanda Heath

To answer your question about why PUN got so big was, as the story goes: when he was younger he got hurt on the NYC streets bc of an accident that he sued for & was awarded roughly 100K. So he was a very good basketball/athlete & had a huge appetite, so as a result, he ate himself into the size he became as he let himself go from dunking basketball's to obesity. That's the story he told. Anyway, saludos from your Puerto Rican brotha. Keep up the great work young men, I like what you're doing. I appreciate that you appreciate your Hip-Hop roots.

*"I feel like I heard this beat before"* .....
*Fun Fact:* The original beat was from Dre and Snoop's song "Deep Cover" released in 1991. If you played GTA: San Andreas, you've definitely heard this song while bumping Westcoast Radio (Radio Los Santos). Snoop is on the music video for the Big Pun/Fat Joe cover.

In my opinion, Big Pun is the one person that can go head to head with Em in terms of technical skill. He was WAY ahead of his time. If he was still rapping to this day he'd be a cheat code just like Em.

More Big Pun to check out (do lyrics videos, music videos are heavily edited): "Im not a player" and "Im still not a player" together to show how he could appeal to the females AND the guys at the same time.
"You came up", "Boomerang", "Beware" are others that show off his diversity in lyrics, flow and beats - but he has a whole catalog of hip hop gems.
He was the first Latino rapper to go platinum. Big Pun and Terror Squad were no joke.

Big Pun’s “I’m not a Player” the original Version with the O’Jays Sample is one of the greatest songs ever. His flow especially when he starts the first verse still gives me chills.
Capital Punishment is one of the best Hip Hip Albums ever. Unfortunately he didn’t live to continue his run as one of the GOATS

Oh, I forgot to add in my previous comment, I love how y'all really get into what the lyrics are about! You look up stuff, you discuss it, you can argue about it, disagree, whatever! I also like how into the song you all get when it's hype, too! I hadn't heard this one in a very long time, I forgot what a lot of it was about actually about, until I heard it again. So, it's not only you guys listening to the song for first time, and letting us old heads know what you think. Sometimes, we also get to relive the song, or remember the moments we may have forgotten through the song!! So, thanks for that too!!

Snoop Dog and Dre came out with a song 187 on an Undercover Cop. Fat Joe and Big Pun used the beat and hook and made this classic.

  • @kierankennedy6971

“187 on an undercover cop” refers to homicide. 187 is the section of California legal code that defines what constitutes murder.

I heard instead of keeping heroine and pills out the studio, fat Joe gave STRICT instruction not to let fried chicken and junk food in the studio because Pun's death was a real fear over his weight. One of his last singles released thay he was in he says "I just lost 100lbs kid, I'm trying to live" wild. His amity with multisyllable rap was immeasurable. R.A the rugged man on "uncommon valor" has a feature where he's reminiscent of Pun but R.A to me still doesn't have the cadence like Pun when he does it. R.A a legend in his own right too tho

I'm an 80s baby from NY my younglings but when you from the hood "laws" don't prevent the trafficking of weapons - and this song was THEE best track that was given light by Dr Dre and Snoop. They gave them even more love because they said their version of it was better - Big Pun was the first Latin rapper in the states in his time to go platinum on the first go.. Big Pun wanted to be known as the Tongue Twister in the game and as you see he did it. He came uo with respect from every rapper around with him including Biggie and Pac ❤
