enlistment to combat units is voluntary, so if the ultra orthodox don t want to fight they don t have to, they can do maintenance, administration etc...
The worst enemies ever? But even a stopped clock is right twice a day, although I wouldn't count on the Israeli Supreme Court to say two correct things a day. Let's try to do this in a way that makes sense. There are an estimated 66,000 haredi eligible for military service. Tzaha"l says it can immediately absorb about 3,000, so 95% are immune for now. Ask for volunteers. There might be 5% who are willing to protect their mothers, wives, siblings, and children. National service, it ought to be realized, is a mitzvah min d'oraita, a commandment right out of the Torah. In Sefer Bamidbar, chapter 1, HaShem tells Moshe Rabbenu to "Count the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by name, every male, by their heads; from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to serve in war in Israel: you will number them by their hosts, even you and Aaron." Then the Tribes were mustered for military service, which sounds an awful lot like Derech Eretz is being commanded right IN the Torah. "But the Levites by their father's tribe were not numbered among them." Because "Hashem spoke to Moses, saying: 'Do not include the tribe of Levi, nor will you count them among the children of Israel; but appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all its furniture, and over all that belongs to it." So, Levites are exempt from military service, even though they can't perform their designated equivalent national service under current conditions. No Mishkan, no Miqdash, no service. Next, hold an examination or evaluation or competition to determine the top 20% of all Yeshivah students. They and the Levites get classed as performing their national service by studying, which means they even get a stipend. The rest get drafted as soon as Tzaha"l can absorb them, but adaptations are made. They are trained and serve in segregated units. They cook and serve their own food, they clean their own latrines, they do their own laundry. When not on combat maneuvers they get several hours a day to study. My recommendation would actually be to try to push them into medic training after basic training and then give them the option to act as what the US Army used to call Chaplain's Assistants. As actual soldiers, they might be able to provide their woefully ignorant colleagues an entree to the world of Torah, so maybe fewer of them will waste their after-service time looking for a spiritual experience in Japan or Nepal or India. Exposure to Torah would certainly be beneficial. When released from service, they are welcome to use their educational benefits in the yeshivot of their choice. Any yeshivah that refuses to cooperate can do without any governmental support, and their graduates are not eligible for governmental rabbinic jobs. If we figure Tzahal can absorb 3,000 haredi recruits every 12 weeks, that would be about 12,000 a year. Excluding the most talented scholars and figuring the Levites come to about 5% of the total, it will take about four years to absorb the rest, though some will undoubtedly either age out before they are called or, most unfortunately, prefer a stretch in jail to service. Yehoshua, Gid'on, Yiftach, Ehud, Barak, Shaul, David, Jonathan, Nehemiah, even Eliyahu and Shmuel all knew which end of a sword to hold.
It seems as if you’re comparing unrighteous Israel of today to the army of Moshe Rabbienu, our blessed memory. HASHEM Gave The Order! So why should these righteous Chakam fight for a corrupt war and an evil leadership? The Chakam should take down the evil leadership, make a righteous people, then make a righteous army. Can HASHEM Make a miracle here by doing the other way around? Baruch HASHEM, HE Can Do Anything. But HE Demands Righteousness from the leadership first. Remove the evil from the land!
@@TheGeneralSoundwave Chachamim. You assume that those willing to defend their homes and families are wicked, and every bachur in every yeshivah is righteous. Fascinating. How is self-defense wicked? I think he acts as the great prosecutor. Deceiving people into vice and sin, and then saying, "look, how ungrateful they are" to the blind judge.
