Will you add a link to the instrument builder's website to the video description above, so people know where they can purchase one of these instruments?

Great Sounds☆ beautiful experimenting☆ on a trip to Ioannina in NW Greece I saw an old Lyra with very many pegs...is that an instrument with sympathetic strings that existed in Greece/Balkans? Or was it an experimental Lyra? The one I saw had only one or two remaining strings on it.

The first one is my favourite! What a beautiful sounds. I like the reaction of the Sympathetic strings. I am from the Netherlands so this music is uncommon here. I love it very much. Do you have any recommendations where I can learn to play the lyra and where I can buy a lyra with Sympathetic strings?

You may contact Cretan Lyra makers. Ross quotes his Lyra on this video. I know almost all Lyra makers are able to make them… you just have to search as they are not that common. Learning to play lyra from the Netherlands can be done probably via online classes. Don’t know if Ross is offering online classes, I know though that quite a few musicians/teachers will. A young one is named Giorgis Vrodinakis might be able to help you with that.

    • @nikoslyra

Nikos Tzannis-Ginnerup Nikos’ reply is basically correct, the first lyra of this type was designed by myself and constructed by Nikos Bras in 1991 in Athens. The design borrows aspects of the Bulgarian Gadulka and the Indian Sarangi which are then incorporated into what is essentially a Cretan lyra. Today they are made primarily by Stelios Petrakis (www.steliospetrakis.com), although other people are also now constructing very fine versions of this instrument.
