I think the funniest part of this design is that, in pursuit of making him cute and appealing, they've done the opposite and just sent his fiery ass straight into the uncanny valley. Also RIP to all the players who wanted an actual terrestrial dragon. Better luck next decade I suppose.

Shyvana has cuter dragon forms than this, and I at least believe she's a dragon in all her jankiness, this doesn't even resemble a dragon outside of having scales and wings.
@@rexex345she is a wyvern which are dragons, the only diference is that the wings are the front legs instead of being separate things on the dragons back.

If anything she's probably closer to the flying wyvern classification from monster hunter than a traditional wyvern considering her terrestrial motion and leaping which is very similar to say a tigrex or barioth.
Instead of a baby dragon, we got a dragon, for babies.

The first character to need a visual update on launch.
Even compared to other streamlined/humanized faces, Smolder’s design is just humanistic enough that it crosses the uncanny valley. It straight up looks like a stylized child face on a dragon’s body.
Human skin-like colors make it even worse
His face and chest being flesh toned does not help at all. It's like a person was transformed into a godless amalgamation of human and reptile as some form of sick torture. It reminds me of that little girl from Full Metal Alchemist who got merged into her dog
It's funny seeing a company try so hard to make something look cute when I can look at an ordinary garden snake and go "Oh what an adorable gentleman"

There are nightmare animatronics, but unless you're Speed i don't think many people found them particularly cute.

As an artist, we don't really have a firm hold with the decisions made by clients. Even if we fought for what we think is right in the end, the higher ups get to have the last say. We only propose , then clients usually say "nice but.... We need hot/cute to sell". We only salvage what we can in the end. Maybe this dragon zoe is the same case.
Those Runeterra dragons look so cool it is downright baffling that they could make a dragon look this bad.
I hope the next cinematic we get of it, is it being eaten by the dragon we're actually going to get

@@kuzz1191 No, but they are owned by another company called Tencent, which is a Chinese company that is a publicly traded company, and it have been shown before that they do meddle a good amount of time, making things worse from what we know. This is one of the reasons we get so few monsters/none-human champs, and the few we get, a lot of them have to look cute, because cute and pretty sells most in Asia, or just in general.
My instant thought when seeing Smolder was simply "we have Spyro at home"
Spyro already nailed the "kid dragon who is both cute and bad ass at the same time" design, and it works because he still looks like a DRAGON, if they can just throw a proper snout onto this champion they can probably save it

There's so many ways to make a dragon cute. Heimer's dragon trainer skin literally has a ton of cute dragons in the splash. Kog'Maw looks vaguely dragon-like and he is incredibly appealing. Toothless and the entirety of HTTYD made a blueprint of cute dragon designs. It's crazy THIS is the direction they decided to go. Also, his face literally makes me feel ill (I'm using literally correctly) because of how uncanny it is. It is stomach-churning.

I spend the last hours since the release of the video thinking about what was the problem for me in the design of Smolder. At first I thought it looks like half human with its flat face and white eyes then I remembered that they already did that with Shyvana and in a better way. Then watching this video I realized that more than half of its face is wobbly ears but dragons like all reptiles don’t have external ears, this just looks like a cursed yordle.
RIGHT! Why does it have Mowgai ears instead of like... horns?! Or if it's gonna have ears, do internal reptilian ears or what monster hunter does with Rathian/ Rathalos with the point goblin ears
Trust me I've seen furry and creature artists design very good dragonss with ears, big ears even.
It is honestly not bad to have ears on a dragon, they aren't reptiles just like dinosaurs aren't, they are dragons. They are mythological creatures that have some of the wildest depictions and least cohisive visuals in all of media. Smolder looks like a dragon... But good god is he an ugly one.

@@sunnyd9321 the game is trash, been stuck playing it for years now. Seen defeat ripped from the jaws of victory too many times to count.
Then there's the yasuo syndrome going full tilt down into a full on spiral, which if allowed spreads to everyone, not unlike rabies. And as everything falls apart all you can think of is how is the game still going on after 50 minutes in. At which point you no longer care anymore about winning or losing, you just need it to stop. But your one man that survived the team kamikaze has decided that he alone can solo the baron instead of ending the game. Which if course leads to the other team to res and steal it.
Can't wait to try out the new champ tho.

How to train your dragon is the goat of making dragon cute in their own way, sorta of cat-like, but still fearsome and wild animals.
Every dragón there has it's own charm Even those that are kind off dumb and awkawrd looking, they all look Better and more convincing than smoulder

It's interesting how they make choices as the world slowly turns. Back in the good old days, look at gnar, it's a perfect example how they made characters with love and respect to lore.

i was struggling to put my finger on what exactly Smoulder reminded me of, and yeah. you hit the nail on the head. i babysit a lot and have seen my share of garbage brainrot modern children's TV, and a TON of the reptile/dragon/dinosaur characters look a LOT, LOT like Smoulder...like, almost TOO much 💀

League should add a champion that is a dragon, but is has some quirky let cool feature about it. It could have two heads, maybe one fire head and a ice head.
