  • Do you REALLY need vitamin C serum (or moisturizer) in your skincare routine? It helps to boost collagen and can help brighten the skin, but do you REALLY need it? And how does it work for Black skin? Thank you to Olay for partnering with me on this video. I had a chance to try out the Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide24 Hydrating Moisturizer months before it launched and loved it, but had some questions about the ingredients so I have Dr. Markaisa Black, PhD Senior Scientist at Olay to chat with us.

    Thanks so much for this video, I was waiting for one on Vit C from you😄. A while ago I was thinking of incorporating a Vit C serum in my routine but I came across rosehip oil. I was told I don’t need a separate Vit C serum as rosehip oil already has vitamin C in it and another serum would just be a double up. Would you be able to talk about this please? I’ve watched some videos on the benefits of rosehip oil but never seen Vit C related comments. I’ve been using it for a while and I feel like it’s not doing all that for my skin🤔 but it’s definitely gentle.

    • @styleandbeautydoctor
      @styleandbeautydoctor  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Darker skin tones can look dull as a result of things like a build up of dead skin cells. There’s also discoloration. Brighten (at least used here on MY channel) means to get a glow and more even skin tone. It could mean something totally different elsewhere, but here that’s what it means.

    Love your hair missy! So speaking of sunscreen, should I be wearing it while working from home? I’m not facing any windows and that Elta MD sunscreen is a little pricey so I tend to use it only when I know I’m stepping out.

    • @styleandbeautydoctor
      @styleandbeautydoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thank you, boo!!! I would still say yes wear it because every bit of sun exposure adds up---you may head outside for a walk or whatever, you may pass by windows through the day, etc. Better to stay ready than to have to get ready...lol. BUT I would just use a really inexpensive version of the sunscreen you normally use. Which specific elta MD sunscreen do you use?

    • @MzShortcake310
      @MzShortcake310 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wondered the same thing. I only apply sunscreen if I know I'm going to leave my house. Other than that, I apply my moisturizer with spf in the morning and that's it. Sunscreen can be expensive if you are ALWAYS reapplying it every two hours even if you're in the house all day.

  • @themillennialmortgagegirl

    I asked myself this when I watched your last video on hyperpigmentation because I've tried a ton of vitamin c products and never see a difference. I wasn't sure if my expectations are unrealistic or I didn't really understand what vitamin c was supposed to do(based on this video I do). My skin always looks the same. I've only noticed a difference with the hyperskin serum and I've tried maybe 20 over the past 10 years.

    • @styleandbeautydoctor
      @styleandbeautydoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hey boo! I think why you saw a difference with the hyper skin vs other vitamin C is that one includes actives that help with fading dark spots (kojic acid). The Olay Vit C products (aside from the eye cream) contain lactic acid which aids in the process of fading discoloration. I do think some people (depending on the type of vitamin C used) will also need a product to fade spots in their routine in addition to vit C. And this is on "fresher" dark spots. Dark spots that have been around for years may also need the help of a skin of color pro in addition to what you do at home.

    Following using rice berry face serum by littleextrrra for three weeks, here's what I felt:
    Benefits: It effectively softens and evens out the skin, giving it a subtle glow. I've also noticed a reduction in my genetic dark circles (avoiding the eye area is recommended). It has also helped diminish dark spots on my sister's skin.
    Cons: Personally, mine is dry and dull skin, and using the serum daily exacerbated my dryness.
    I suggest using it three times weekly along with a good moisturizer to avoid dryness. I haven't seen any noticeable improvement in tan or pigmentation issues in first 3 weeks.
    Update 2 months later: After almost two months of regular use, I regard it my holy grail face serum. It began showing promising outcomes. My skin is glowing, dark circles lessened, and dark spots faded a lot. So patience is key when using this serum.

    Love your hair!!! Non related question. Was watching a makeup review on a foundation that happened to contain octinoxate. The reviewer said that octinoxate is hazardous. Honestly it scared me and has me ready to declutter anything containing it. What are your views on octinoxate?

    • @styleandbeautydoctor
      @styleandbeautydoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thank you so much!!! Not understanding the context of why that reviewer felt octinoxate was hazardous, but I wouldn't be so fast to declutter anything you have that contains it. It's an organic/chemical UV filter used often in sunscreens and some complexion products like foundation. It's also one of the oldest UV filters and most commonly used---it's often combined with other UV filters though since it only protects against UVB. Not sure why that person made that statement.
      Here's two sources that I find reliable on octinoxate:
      www.paulaschoice.com/ingredient-dictionary/sunscreen-actives/octinoxate.html

    Can I use an every day aHA face cleanser before using vitamin C serum or retinol serum?

    • @styleandbeautydoctor
      @styleandbeautydoctor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use an AHA face cleanser before vitamin C---there may even be evidence that using an AHA before vitamin C can make the vitamin C "more beneficial" to the skin. This is of course if you experience no irritation. You might be able to do the same with the AHA cleanser and retinol, but there can be a bigger chance of irritation---just be mindful and like you would with anything else new to your routine, go with the lowest percentage first and slowly introduce it into your routine to mitigate irritation.

      these type of skincare products are unisex---so it matters more about your skin concerns and needs as well as how your skin tolerates the products.

      I would concentrate on repairing your skin barrier first before using anything new at all. You can find more details on that in these videos:

    I am trying my second vitamin C ( Dr. Dennis Gross month 2) and so far it does nothing for my dark spots .. so irritated 😤 I don't understand why it's needed but I'm going to keep trying until I find one that works. As a 45 year old I believe my skin doesn't heal like it use to so I know patience is key... anyhow, I'll try olay products when I'm done with my current products. Very informative video.

      @styleandbeautydoctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      hey boo! sorry you're experiencing that! what else are you using in your routine? BUT I will also say that it can take up to 12 weeks to start to see results with OTC products. Dark spots have some nerve showing up really quickly only to take forever sometimes to fade.
