Death of Sri Lankan woman sparks debate over Japan's asylum policy • FRANCE 24 English

  • Wishma Sandamali, a 33-year-old Sri Lankan woman, died in a Japanese detention centre in March of last year. Her death sparked debate on the treatment of the 1,500 asylum seekers currently in detention in #Japan. Many of them claim they are being treated inhumanely. Despite its economic might, Japan takes in few #refugees. In 2020, it accepted less than 100 asylum seekers, while France, whose population is half the size of Japan's, took in 24,000. Our correspondents report from the city of Nagoya, where Wishma died. #SriLanka

She initially agreed to return home after being detained for her criminal overstaying. It was the activists who incited her to fight and stay (her own crime) by submitting refugee applications without any merits. She would have all the medical care she wanted if she went home. The problems in this are: (1) She criminally overstayed her visa; (2) She refused to return to her home country after the immigration authorities ordered her to; (3) She used false and meritless reasons to unlimitedly submit refugee applications so that she could stay in the country limitlessly; (4) The immigration authorities ignored her request for medical care due to long-standing distrust in this individual. The Japanese immigration authorities had some problems, so did this individual. Through the latest legal revisions, the authorities can deport applicants who had been refused twice, and now they put medical professionals in all immigration detention facilities. The government has done everything to stop this from happening again. And to every of such applicants: just do not commit crimes.

Japan's immigration laws are flawed, and there is no limit to the number of times an illegal immigrant can apply for refugee status.
As a result, even illegal immigrants who are clearly not refugees end up staying in Japan for a long time while refusing to be deported to their home countries, even if their refugee applications are rejected many times.
This leads to long-term detention problems at Japanese immigration facilities. Illegal residents in Japan's immigration facilities refuse to be deported to their home countries and engage in resistance activities such as hunger strikes
By the way, if they say they will return to their home country, they will be released from immigration facilities in Japan immediately

Wishma initially wanted to return home. However, both Wishma's mother and her sister refused to pay for Wishma's return home. Moreover, Wishma's mother and her sister even cut contact with Wishma.
During this time, the Sri Lankan government has also refused to pay for Wishma's return trip. During her lifetime, Wishma said at a Japanese immigration facility, "I hate Sri Lanka." Then she changed her wish to her stay in Japan

it’s factually wrong. at first she wanted to return to her home but changed her stance to stay in japan after meeting the activist group, but it sounds so strange in three ways.
first asylum seekers are supposed to be afraid of persecution by the authorities but she desired to go home at first. It’s contradictory.
second her reason being refugee was by her husband’s domestic violence but it’s not the condition for refugees, because then it’s her government she should have begged for help to, not japan.
third it’s likely japan’s activist group abets ppl contained at border control centers to go hunger strike so that they’re given a parole and go away, but it’s so inhuman act they’re exposed to death like this time.

Japan is an island country in the Far East. Due to such geographical conditions, according to Japanese refugee judges, 99% of those who apply for refugee status in Japan are economic refugees, not refugees
Wishma, a deceased Sri Lankan woman, said that her first reason for applying for refugee status in Japan was that she was being chased by the Sri Lankan underground. She also said the reason for her second asylum application was to escape the violence of her Sri Lankan lover. Meanwhile, she continued to refuse to return to Sri Lanka.
