    Great video. The Deltics only smoke like that when they've been cold for a bit. It's unburnt oil. Once they get going for a while there's not so much smoke output. There's no other train that makes a sound like the Deltic.

    • @keithammleter3824

      It would be smoking because it is operating without a load - it's not pulling a train. This means two things: 1) the exhaust gas volume is lower, so the partly burnt oil is a greater fraction, and 2) the combustion temperature is lower, and so burning the lube oil less completely.

      Clag is not good. It is unburned fuel contaminating the environment with hydrocarbons.
      It is irresponsible for your to say it is "nice to see".
      Also what you can't see is carbon dioxide contributing to greenhouse gases and global warming climate change?
      These polluting locos must be broken apart and the scrap recycled to make cleaner traction.

  • @RichardLordRix
    @RichardLordRix ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just want to put it out there that the smoke seen is not soot, carbon, of any other greenhouse damaging emission. It is unburnt lubricating oil that has been heated to a vapour state.
    If you watch closely as the logo passes the plume is only emitted from one exhaust. Could be caused by a number of things: damaged piston rings, valves, injectors, or, and must likely in this case, a damaged oil seal on the induction side of the turbo [exhaust side is another candidate]. Upshot is that this is not the usual exhaust seen from a normal healthy Deltic loco, no matter how lightly loaded it is working.
    So, yeah boo sucks to all those bashing the environmentalist drums, that's nothing what they looked like when in regular service, and what you see is not responsible for climate change. The only greenhouse damage it's doing is to make the glass sticky so that dust sticks to the panes and residues the light coming in.

      The problem is the engine technology, it could never achieve the energy efficiency (and low emissions) of a turbo charged 4 stroke diesel or the power to size and weight of a gas turbine, so Napier got squeezed out the market, however the Deltic does represent a rather glorious evolutionary dead end, if you are going to go you may as well go with a bang.

    • @danieldonaldson8634
      @danieldonaldson8634 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grahamariss2111 I don't believe you're right. On the question of efficiency, they were very efficient. They were very intolerant of poor maintenance, however, and the shops they were serviced in lacked sufficient trained crews. The uses outside of railways that they were marketed to were largely naval and military uses, also at a time when massive disarmament had killed most prospects. Questions of emissions really didn't come into the matter in the era that they were built and low fuel prices made fuel consumption also less of a consideration....

    • @grahamariss2111
      @grahamariss2111 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Daniel Donaldson That is my point, they were a solution of their time, but as turbid charging bought diesel 4 strioke with sufficient power density for rail why would you stick with the Deltic with its higher fuel consumption. Now Napier stretched the power density but then it lost out as a patrol boat engine to gas turbines because of the simpler maintenance. it was dead end.

      I feel that way with Electric Locomotives, can't understand the fascination with them,
      Sure they're fast, comfortable and quiet, but in my opinion, you can't beat a good ol' Steam Locomotive, Steam locos feel like they're living things, whereas electrics are silent and characterless and Diesels are okay but as you say, not a patch on Steam locomotives 👍🏻
