Great job. A tip i learned was to seal the wood using a little epoxy on it. Paint it on and in all the grooves. Then it will be sealed when you do your pour.

I use double sticky tape to hold my wood down in the mold to keep it from floating up in the resin. You can use clear enamel spray on the wood to seal it before putting in resin, it keeps the bubbles from coming out of the wood during the resin curing process. Love the coasters, I made 4 after watching this. Thanks for the inspiration.

Outstanding! Small hint, get some scrap UHMW and cut them into blocks to fit over the top of your molds and you’ll never have to worry about a clamp being stuck in the resin again 😊👍🏻
Lol at the adorable comment! They look great and I love seeing the little bits of burl being used. :) If you are ever doing a project where clamping isn't an option, you can split the pour into two. Do a shallow pour and that will secure all of the pieces down. After it cures, do a second pour to finish it off.
They look great. I have been using Zar POLY OMU (Oil Modified Urathane) Its a little expensive but great finish. Comes in gloss. Semi gloss and satin. I apply with a pad so no brush marks

Excellent project. I got those same molds after seeing your video. You can use Zinsser seal coat to seal the wood as well. It’s a 2# cut of shellac. Works great!

I am new to your channel (the reason for such a late comment) but you could also do something similar and a little larger, make a window pane frame and use the epoxy squares as the glass pieces and hang on a wall as art work
few questions. Firstly, i know nothing except stuff i watch on youtube but could you have used a planer to save some time or is that risky to break them? also, did you need to scuff up the inside edge of the wood that contacts the epoxy so it sticks better? i saw people doing that with tables which are deeper but not sure if that applies here
Looks awesome! For the top of the coasters did you have to sand on the inside of the ridges so the epoxy is even to the wood since your clamping made the epoxy adherence uneven? When I do mine I think I want the natural wood to be flush with the epoxy so you can clearly see the grain. Wasn’t sure because it looked like most of the video was on the flat underside of the coaster.
Thank you! Nope! Using clamps to press them down helps to level them with the mold. So, the epoxy will meet the wood instead of penetrate underneath it. So, it’s just as flat either way. You just got some exposed wood grain popping out of the epoxy when you clamp them down. Hope this helps!
probaby a silly question. When you finished the caosters...it is ard to tell......is the frame or ridge of the coaster turned up to act as a barrier for liquid falling off.
The inside was the part that was upside down in the mold, so I didn’t have to sand that much because it was already flush! I just touched up little slots and then finished it.
Beautiful project. I am not familiar with proxy/resin either. Could we run the final piece through a surface planer or do we have to sand everything down?
the bottom side of the wood that did not get epoxy on it, did you just seal it with the oil? How would I avoid that in my project? Would it be easier to pour about 1/4 inch and then set the wood on top and do a 2nd pour so tha its fully incased?
Thank you! The inside were coated with resin, so I didn't really have to sand. If you make coasters like this, it will depend how coated the inside is after your pour!

After sanding and fixing any imperfections, I just apply another super thin layer.

Using a planer makes a very big mess and it could cause more harm then good. You're better off hand sanding/random orbit ssnding
lacquer or vanished can be used or not ?? will you try it ?

Use a small blow torch or heating gun on the resin. Wipes off with acetone from metal!

Not silly! Yes, there’s a slightly raised frame and it totally keeps any liquid from spilling over.

I sanded and sealed with oil. You can use epoxy, if you prefer! I wanted to keep the deep “groove” intact so it could collect moisture from my glass.
