    Great review, as always, Bo. You and Loopop convinced me to get an SL MKIII (61-key).
    What I love about the SL MKIII after owning it for almost a year-- the Templates. 8 Tracks / MIDI Channels (change both on the fly). The ability to send the same midi notes and midi messages via USB AND MIDI. Why is this the BEST selling point for me?
    Well, I have the SL MKIII plugged in via USB to my laptop (where I do a lot of my electronic music). I also have it plugged in via MIDI to my studio desktop tower... this is where I do guitar/bass/vocals/drum stuff... and occasionally electronic as well. The keyboard sends info to both computers, easily... with no weird behavior. It's so damn convenient!
    Say I have a track for the laptop. When I want to play the laptop, I select that Track (on the SL MKIIII). When I want to play the desktop computer, I select a different Track (on the SL MKIII). It's just so perfect. One keyboard, two systems (usually the desktop has Reaper running, and the laptop, Ableton). And of course, the second MIDI output goes exclusively to my hardware (I don't have a ton of hardware, but some). Again, ONE keyboard controlling all three of these "stations."
    I rarely use the step-sequencer, but it is fun... and I NEVER use CV for anything.... Re: the SL MKIII's "InControl" mode-- Ableton support is phenomenal. And for Reaper, Jurgen Mossgraber made "DrivenByMoss" (for many devices, including Push 2, etc. etc)... it gives insanely useful Reaper functionality, while in InControl mode. Being able to go in and out of InControl mode, and "regular" mode, using my custom MIDI Templates.... it's lightning-fast workflow and just.... perfect. There's no other word. Novation absolutely nailed it.
    As many people have said-- a firmware update with more encoder banks, more fader banks, more button banks... would be the greatest thing EVER. In the meantime, just having multiple similar Templates is a workaround.
    I love this thing so much, I bought a second one (49-key) in early 2020.
    If Novation made an SL MKIII (37 mini keys, like Yamaha Reface CP-style), ugh. Best thing EVER....
    I just love, love, LOVE this midi controller to death.... perfection.

    Well done review, and the only review on YT with a demo sequence that was wonderful to listen to. Just bought one in JAN2025, because of 1.4 firmware.
    1) Un-quantize or zero quantize option now available. This turns the SL into an up to 8 measure pattern sequencer! Record all 8 measures without chaining or one at a time.
    2) 8 arpeggios, one per track, either with a sequence running or not.

    Thank you, this is one of the best review of this controller.
    I was wondering why they choose to not integrate also the sound module of the circuit in it: it would have been not too expensive and the result would have been a great added value to it as a standalone instrument...i.e a circuit with a playable keyboard and plenty of monitors + an awesome midi controller.
    Anyway, have you tried the circuit with the SL mk3? Is it recognised and pre-mapped correctly?

    I hadn’t heard of this yet. With the announcement of the keystep pro do you believe that the keystep pro has a more capable sequencer? At the end of the day controlling my hardware synths is the most important controlling the daw is an added bonus for this controller. I’m torn between the two both seem amazing

    • @Methanol2000
      @Methanol2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was about to buy Keystep Pro, but then I came across this one; more capable sequencer, and better quality + more reliable than Arturia's products. My SL61 MKIII should arrive in few days, can't wait =)

    • @DopamineOverload
      @DopamineOverload 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have Beatstep Pro and Keystep. Never really touch them though I really dig the Beatstep Pro. It would be perfect it had a polyphonic step sequencer, instead of monophonic. I bought the SL MKIII (61-key) in summer 2019. It's my main board. I made tons of Templates for it, for Reaper, for some hardware, for random synth plugins, etc. It's a mainstay for sure. Got another 49-key earlier this year.
      I am looking heavily at the Keystep Pro. But I'm going to wait until bugs are worked out. There are always bugs with Arturia stuff. I waited years before buying Beatstep, BSP and KS. Had Keylab Essential. Sold it. Had Keylab MK2. Sold that. Kept Minilab MK2.
      I think you should totally get an SL MKIII, if only the 49-key version. Wait on the KSP until all the reviews are in. You'll love the SL, I think. But the Keystep Pro looks very enticing. Three polyphonic step-sequencers... lots of functionality. Price isn't terrible...

      Have had the SL61 MKIII for a few days now; it's just a beast..well worth the price. My only wishes so far would be the ability to route more than one cc to a pad for example, and that there would be better documentation included.

    • @john-paulsullivan5543
      @john-paulsullivan5543 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Methanol2000 I received the slmk3 a few days ago and I am thoroughly satisfied. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem compatible for “in control” in my older version of Ableton Live 9. The good news is that I don’t totally understand the point as I am using this to manage my hardware and I can simply record the midi into live. I have been a user and consumer of various hardware sequencers for many years and this is by far the most intuitive and powerful sequencer I have ever worked with. I love the pattern and step workflow. Finally everything is at my fingertips and I can build up sequences and record my ideas without having to stop and edit midi piano roll with a mouse or fiddle between merged hardware sequencers and keyboards. The visual feedback is huge because I feel like I always know exactly where I am. The arpeggiator is the most advanced I’ve used I am very satisfied how it works in conjunction with the sequencer and the latching mode to create elaborate melodies so quickly. Also big thanks to novation for including chord mode. I think I’ll be using this as my main controller for the foreseeable future. While there are so many sequencers on the market with all kinds of wild features this one just checks all the boxes for me when it comes down to how I can actually turn ideas into songs.

    Look forward to trying a demo unit it the shops to feel the key bed to compare it to my current MIDI keyboard. The eight sequences plus the easy switching to MIDI sound module is what has really caught my interest.
    Thinking about those eight sequences made me think of an enhancement for the BeatStep PRO, so I sent this suggestion to Arturia:
    "I rarely use all 16 patterns for Seq1/2 and all 16 projects. It would be great to have an option to split up Seq1/2 memory so that we could have four seqs + drums. SHIFT+Seq1 for Seq3 and SHIFT+Seq2 for Seq4."
    Thought I'd at least plant the seed, never know, might be doable.

    - can i set a midi program change per part?
    - how the chord programming works?
    - how the split zones corresponding in ableton live when I want to record each zone simultaneously

    • @BoBeats

      BoBeats in this case, it makes no sense to create songs with the MKIII, because program change ist not set able via CC, it’s a generic midi command.

    So I just figured out an awesome workaround to turn use the circuit with a separate midi keyboard to sequence and play notes.
    Basically it’s midi keyboard and circuit midi out into midi merger, midi merger out into in of my deepmind 12 and korg microkorg. It’s then midi thru from both the microkorg and deepmind into a splitter and back into the circuit. This allows me to use the circuit as a sequencer while playing the keys from a separate midi keyboard. Enjoy

    Nice review! I would like something like this at some point, just for studio use. 16 steps is just not enough though, I'm also not sure if there's any probability integration. Seems like it doesn't do polyrhythms (in contrast to polymeter), beyond triplets, bit of a shame. Imo, as a "control/sequence everything" sort of unit, this needs much more than just basic sequencing abilities. Pyramid+decent midi keyboard seems like a better option for now.

      Eternal Void It can sequence up to 128 steps by chaining patterns. Also the definition of each step in a pattern can be changed to extend the bar length further if you’re not using all the steps in a pattern. The latter it does per pattern.

      KWHCoaster I can't justify the 100$ price increase for 12 Keys more, this is insane. For that price you're better off getting an Arturia Beatstep or an 25/49 key keyboard in case you need more keys.

      @KWHCoaster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can, I'll spend that on a concert ticket and merch. And I hate messing with +/- octave buttons.
      Not a must have, yet. Whether I want to drop $699US (or $999Cdn+) for one when I already have the Akai MPK61 is another issue. I'm also really used to the BeatStep PRO's 64 step patterns without needing to chain patterns, so 16 steps puts me off.

    On the video on Novation's channel, they say the sequencer is 16 steps (1 bar), but you're sequencing 4 bars. Please explain.
    Do you have to stop the sequencer every time you want to work on a new track/part/MIDI channel or can you leave the sequencer running and select tracks on-the-fly? What I'm wanting to do is what I did in my JX-Di "Summer Madness" video, except with 8-16 tracks instead of only 4.
    Also, at 16:35, there was a note hanging after you stopped the sequencer and kept sustaining while you were talking until your jump cut (where you probably fixed the stuck note). Is that a common issue?

    Why only 8 knobs times 2? Can't you press "arrow down" as many times as needed and populate these controls the same way you do it in USB to MIDI mode? Like the way I do this in Ableton with VSTs where I have over 30 controls per track? (I haven't yet set these up in MIDI to control my hardware synths because I can easily reach my synth rack to control my synths directly).

    I would love to see pre mapped VSTs a la the Nektar Panarama or NI boards. Novation has taken the time to pre-map popular hardware , why not do the same for VSTs? Obviously you still can make your own, but it would be great to have a starting point for plug ins like: Massive, Serum, Sylenth, Spire, Diva, etc.

  • @jayneural
    @jayneural 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video, I'm sure they'll add 32 or 64 step sequencing, definitely makes sense. Couple of questions :
    - Have you tried using the sl mkiii with an iOS device ? With a small stand it would make of this a great standalone synth !
    - I also wonder if we can assign zones to different instruments/VSTs when connected on a computer or tablet. Would require the target software / VST to have a setting to accept only messages from a defined MIDI channel I guess.

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zones in daw: so i have not tested but since you can send a zone to a dedicated midi channel and in every daw you can set a vst instrument to a dedicated midi channel it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

    What combination of other products would at least match this or even surpass this? Mk2, Keystep, Circuit? Already have an MK2 49 and had the SQ-1 and Keystep next on shopping list with ambitions to buy the Circuit after, but the MK3 has now kinda blindsided me lol. So a little confused on my next steps. (PS I am not the end user. I only research and buy for the young musician in the family studying Sound Prod/Music away in the big city). PPS. Also using with Ableton, Minilogue, Volca (Keys, Beats, Bass), Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, ADAM T7V. A dedicated hardware Sequencer was next on the list (SQ-1, Keystep, Beatstep, Circuit) although they figured out how to do some hardware sequencing with Minilogue, but now maybe thinking about getting just the SQ-1, then MK3, but if a combo can match MK3, a growing combo like (SQ-1, Keystep, Circuit) might be more fun than just this beast alone. Thoughts, anyone?

    www.reddit.com/r/Novation/comments/bt0in8/sl_mkiii_mk3_what_it_desperately_needs_especially/
    TL;DR-- better lighting implementation for patterns and faders, more BANKS of buttons/encoders/faders (two is NOT enough-- and we need this OUTSIDE of the InControl stuff)... make the right arrows (scene launchers) DO something for non-Ableton users (let us MAP those, like the drum pads), etc.

    Because, if not, and we can have multiple zones within a part, then in theory we could sequence 64 instruments, but in practise: 50. DIN1 + DIN2 + USB + CV1 + CV2 = 16 + 16 + 16 + 2 = 50! WOW!

    At 11:26.... "and now if I turned it on...." thanks BoBeats.... finally somone that told me how to switch on my arpeggiator.... this is really crazy since I have the Novation SL MkIII and I could not switch on my arps... thanks for all your videos... I must admit that I am a little bit disappointed by the Novation SL MkIII.... I bought it to be able to control all my gears.. but since I am making music with at least a 4 bar (4 x 16 steps) scenario possibly chained with intros and bridges... and since I normally used to put in step-time notes just playing the notes as they come "naturally" not pushing a button which refer to each note/step... this flag-ship "piece of gear" did not help me out so much... I really wish you could do more follow-up videos and more tutorials on how to make real songs on this Novation SL ... from Novation they only shows the 16 flashings steps all the time.... it's really frustrating ... songs are not only loops made by 1 bar of 16 steps flashing around.....Why couldn't they create a "Music Maker Jam" type of hardware interface.... so easy to use on your mobile... so versatile... imagine controlling hardware synthesizers instead of the vst sounds in your mobile phone...MMJ can chain loops... Thanks Bo Beats...
