Wow, I didn’t know they made new TD124’s. I wonder how my Goldring Lenco GL75 compares? Nice setup video, beautiful turntable. Thanks for the setup video.
Great video! Love my original TD-124. I would think that balancing the tonearm before attaching the anti-skate would make balancing easier, and maybe more accurate. They should have included 78 rpm.
I’d be curious to know what cartridge you are using. Four grams for the tracking weight seems a little high. Thanks for going over all of the details on the video. The first few seconds of Take Five sounded heavenly.
@@trevor245 The one he used is Ortofon SPU#1E. The optional one with Thorens is much higher end one, a modified SPU Synergy G with lower tracking force and easier handling by phono.
At 3:16, "rebates"? Here in the States, a "rebate" means that you get money back, like a sort of coupon for a refund, when or after you purchase the unit. At this price, I certainly hope so!
It means the same in the UK, but it also means a cutout or a notch in the surface of something. I have no idea of the etymology so I don't know if the two meanings are related.
@@rogerking7258 , here we would say "recess" or " notch" or " indent". Recess has another meaning, however, it's when kids in school get a break from the classroom to go outside and play.
Cool video and beautiful turntable!!! Wonderful system too as far as I can see... Did you try any other cartridges than the SPU 124? What would be your best fit in terms of head-shells and cartridges in case you have spent some time investigating other combinations?
3.5-4.0 grams? What are you using for a Cartridge? In the last twenty years, all of my cartridges have a downforce of 1.4 to 2.0. The only cartridge with heavy downforce is the conical tip??
If Thornes wants to re-release a classic..It should be the 125-Mk II. I recently re-built mine. Works better than ever. At least with the 125 your not stuck with that built-in "budget" tonearm. 4 grams...Yikes !
Nice, good to see they are going forward by going direct drive! 👍 Btw, that tonearm looks suspiciously much like an old EMT tonearm, those were really good! What's the rumble specification of this turntable?
This is a nice turntable but it’s a completely redesigned direct drive. It has almost nothing in common with the original TD 124 which is a belt/idler drive.
I saw this and thought it would be fun to own one - cool retro look. The brand name concerned me because I thought that might mean it costs over $500 (I used to sell hi-fi and consider Thorens stuff to be good, but over priced somewhat). I just looked up the price. Yeah, I won't be owning one of these. This one is in the "rich man's toy" price range ($11,500). Maybe Audio Technica could make a clone, and they could get Crosley to design the look. :D
Where's the lid? Ten grand and it doesn't have a lid? And why would I need an instructional video about setting it up? For ten grand I'd expect someone from Thorens to come round and set it up personally. And bring me a lid!
I don't understand this. It's just a pastiche of a (great) original, but it's direct drive, doesn't have 78rpm and costs a fortune which would almost certainly buy superior performance. It seems to be all about the looks and a huge mark up; a bit like lots of Leica's cameras.
0.04% wow&flutter. This is extremely poor for over $10,000 direct drive turntable. Better than td 402&403 dd's 0.15%, but still worse than Technics' cheapest model's 0.025%.
Although i respect this brand but for this price you can buy something wayy better and better good looking in half price than this ungly thing . Technics SL-1200G for example
@@joebloggs8636 How about you expand on that comment. What makes this so special over the Technics (besides, perhaps, its looks)? This is basically a repro, whose cosmetic design comes close (but certainly doesn't duplicate) the original. The internals are completely different from the original.
Direct drive is the only improvement here. Otherwise, this is a sorry, unworthy successor to the original 124. You are stuck with their choice of tonearm. No 78 rpm speed and no dust cover available. And for the ridiculous high price, not even made in Europe. What a joke. The opportunity for greatness was lost here.☹
Way over priced, say's he who owns a £50K TT, but at least mine is not a re run of a classic that never was anywhere near this, price adjusted, in the past. A Garrard 401 from Artisan would make this look very humble and it's a better TT
Super groovy! Enjoy!. Love the yellow prism strobe! Easy to determin speed drift! Thank you so much!
I'm always amazed at spending tons of money on great stereo equipment then putting the turn table right next to the speakers..
Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for doing this.
Old School turntable set up! Beautiful revival of a great classic.........but $14,000 is sadly way above my pay grade. Good video Shaun.
buy original, its cheaper and its better
@@ЕМТФранц i have an origiinal, i do not know if its "better' but i love it.
A dream machine indeed.
I was bit surprised that the VTF scale on the arm was not accurately calibrated.
I think that was more user related...If you want to do it properly remove anti-skate at least.
@@martinda7446 So the anti skate caused it to be almost a whole gram off?

Beautiful, love the head shell.
the Arm looks very similar to the famous EMT 929 arm

Your gl75 is closer to the original TD124. This new TD124DD is direct drive. Good sound but I like the original better.

That's correct, suppose to balance tonearm before anti-skate
Great demo mate!
MARVELOUS SET
Pretty turntable! Thanks for the video!

Definitely an SL-1200 motor unit there.
Nah, the modern SL-1200 motors are axial.
Only the old 1200s have those type of radial motors.
@@QoraxAudio Yes, an original SL-1200 motor unit, as I stated.
Looks more like the motor unit used in many of the so-called "Super OEM" turntables. Nothing wrong with that though :)
Much gratitude for providing this unboxing, Shaun, but doesn't this table come with a wooden box framed with metal bars?
this is a pretty good record player system !
beautiful table
Can you not use the cueing device at all? Meaning manually lift, move the tonearm back into position and vice versa?

When adjusting the tracking force, best move the counterweight and not the spring mech…

I use Goldring Ethos with 124DD and seems to work very well with it.
This is the first time I have heard about this TT. I am assuming that DD means direct drive....
Yes, to distinguish it from the original which was idler drive

SPU which uses heavy tracking
Damn. 4 grams sounds pretty heavy. Lovely table though. I have a late serial Mark I that sounds fantastic.
Where available ? I am interested to buy.
For the price they should send someone to your home to set it up. 😁
Bubble Level to check azimuth! Brilliant.
What direct drive motor does this use? Technics? or one of the Chinese OEM's?
I hope they made it themselves since Thorens (Switzerland) invented the direct drive..
From what I believe the turntable is made in Taiwan so make of that what you will

Very.
