Unboxing and setting up the the brand new Thorens TD124DD

In 1957 Thorens released its iconic TD 124 onto the market and it quickly becomes a great success. It is aimed both at the professionals in the broadcasting studios and home audio enthusiasts who wanted to play the newly introduced stereo long-playing vinyl records available around the same time in top quality. The TD 124 was produced until 1968 but now the legendary brand is now building on th...

    0.04% wow&flutter. This is extremely poor for over $10,000 direct drive turntable. Better than td 402&403 dd's 0.15%, but still worse than Technics' cheapest model's 0.025%.

    Much gratitude for providing this unboxing, Shaun, but doesn't this table come with a wooden box framed with metal bars?

    Can you not use the cueing device at all? Meaning manually lift, move the tonearm back into position and vice versa?

    For the price they should send someone to your home to set it up. 😁

    Great video! Love my original TD-124. I would think that balancing the tonearm before attaching the anti-skate would make balancing easier, and maybe more accurate. They should have included 78 rpm.

    3.5-4.0 grams? What are you using for a Cartridge? In the last twenty years, all of my cartridges have a downforce of 1.4 to 2.0. The only cartridge with heavy downforce is the conical tip??

  • @jazzman578
    @jazzman578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Direct drive is the only improvement here. Otherwise, this is a sorry, unworthy successor to the original 124. You are stuck with their choice of tonearm. No 78 rpm speed and no dust cover available. And for the ridiculous high price, not even made in Europe. What a joke. The opportunity for greatness was lost here.☹

    Where's the lid? Ten grand and it doesn't have a lid? And why would I need an instructional video about setting it up? For ten grand I'd expect someone from Thorens to come round and set it up personally. And bring me a lid!

    Gute Idee, den kultigen TD124 als Direktantriebler herauszubringen. Aber statt deutscher Fertigung Fertigung in Fernost bei Hanpin. Und das zum Preis von rund 8000 EUR pro Stück? Für ein Discotheken-Setup mit 2 Geräten wären das umgerechnet 32 Tausend Mark! Billig herstellen lassen zu Fernost-Löhnen - verkaufen an eine Elite von Besserverdienenden.

    I saw this and thought it would be fun to own one - cool retro look. The brand name concerned me because I thought that might mean it costs over $500 (I used to sell hi-fi and consider Thorens stuff to be good, but over priced somewhat). I just looked up the price. Yeah, I won't be owning one of these. This one is in the "rich man's toy" price range ($11,500). Maybe Audio Technica could make a clone, and they could get Crosley to design the look. :D

    Cool video and beautiful turntable!!! Wonderful system too as far as I can see... Did you try any other cartridges than the SPU 124? What would be your best fit in terms of head-shells and cartridges in case you have spent some time investigating other combinations?

      @@EddieJazzFan Er No he just didn't do it properly. Just so you know where I'm coming from. I'm not criticising just letting you know what's going on. I am an audio engineer of getting on for 45 years. I too would be interested to see the how well it is calibrated after having owned two TD124s in my time.and in those 45 years have never seen an arm a gram out..And that would literally be thousands of tonearms. You need to take a little bit of care.

    If Thornes wants to re-release a classic..It should be the 125-Mk II. I recently re-built mine. Works better than ever. At least with the 125 your not stuck with that built-in "budget" tonearm. 4 grams...Yikes !
