It is heart warming to see so many people on here remembering this young lad John Condon...it shows just how grown up Ireland has become in recent years...it is great to see commemorations now held in the Republic of Ireland to commemorate those who fought the common enemy in France. Unfortunately if John Condon had survived, and returned home, he too would have faced the wrath of his neighbours at the time for fighting for "the English". Well done Ireland, i take my cap off to you for your common sense and seeing these young men and boys for who they were, and not something to be ashamed of. God bless every man from Ireland Catholic, Protestant and dissenter....Unionist and Nationalist who donned the uniform and fought in the great war...each one a hero.
John Condon... My dad's name. My name's Daniel John Condon. My entire history originated from Waterford. This Condon is one of us, the fierceness and courage, he's one of us.
War and violence is the enemy of all human kind, whatever their nationality or religion or politics. A most beautiful song for a kid who never saw his full potential.
I visited John Condon's grave on a school trip to WW1 battlefields and graves. One of the pupils from an Irish school sang this song. A very poignant tribute and story that will live with me forever. Lest We Forget! 😔
A great song I first heard sung by an accordian player, Brendan O'Shea. Yes, he fought for Britain, but some can see past the narrow minded bigotry that would hijack the song as "Their's." Brendan visited the grave, as have other Nationalists to show respect to the lad and his bravery. RIP John.
Fondly remembered sweet voice stunning lyrics - What is war good for ? Absolutely nuthin say it again !! Edwin Starr -- more listen to Universal Soldier Donovan
Given that he comes from Waterford City, it is unlikely that he joined with the motive of fighting for "King and Country" and more likely he joined in the hope that he and many other Irish soldiers who fought would be rewarded with home rule.
He has got recognition from his fellow countrymen, I come from the same part of Ireland as he did which is Waterford, and I can assure you he his remembered here and has a monument in the city dedicated to him.

I appreciate your sentiments, John; you give Loyalism a good name. For all living memory, the Troubles were at bottom about the challenge to live as neighbors, and it's a blessing that this is now generally acknowledged. My paternal grandfather was a message-runner for de Valera, and I always desired a United Ireland (by peaceful and persuasive means) but as of this year, I can no longer say so. However it came into being, Northern Ireland is now the only place in the British Isles (and practically the only in Europe) where life is protected from conception, marriage hasn't been redefined into a Facebook Status, and most people aren't turning their back on God. For now, it would do more good for the Republic and Great Britain to join Northern Ireland than vice versa!

Sean Degidon hi just to say about the UK and the Republic if all 4 that make the place united kingdom got on the same page and the south is the only border we have is with the south this could have got all even more for Scotland The Chance to have to make stuff that's done by the EU to give it to local parliaments but instead the SNP would do anything to get a referendum to leave the UK even when they know due to oil prices they would have to make some big cuts and this would be to the less well off and low paid workers we don't have millions coming to take MPs jobs its the unskilled jobs and the less educated i know this is true as its the kind I go for and i find being a local as a disadvantage and places I worked before where pays from 90p to £2.95 less now over the last 3-5 year they can take these jobs as there 8 of them sharing places to stay some have converted sheds i have reporteded landlords that have room for 4 but have up to 10 but noting happens as soon as I point out that if I was an immagrent from africa or the middle east I would get more of a pass and locals are needing foodbanks in numbers nevers seen before but these immagrents I know who stay in the places I have said are always down getting the foodbanks food too. again I point out but find locals need to jump from social work to council when the ones that say their immigrants don't as it is not up to these departments but I bet well over half should no be here, even more, are not allowed to work they get an allowance. I am worried about my sister's kids as this change has been forced upon us so fast. I am worried we end up not getting out and end up with the poverty like Greece proud hard working people were the elderly got say 120 euro a week as they paid into the system there whole life then it was cut to 40 euro and they had to stand for hours to get. This makes me feel sick and mad its put me off having a kid look at the mess in the last 5-year by the fools in the E.U.P to me its just Germany that get to drive the boat I did not vote for then and if I disagree with what's happening as I do I then get labeled far-right racist nazi they just love to label. I am not for stopping all aid and help I want our house in order and for the billions we give to be spent helping the real refugees and people need it also we should not be paying some head of charities over £110.00 some getting way more when all the work is getting done by volunteers change is coming but in what way I don't know its going to be 1 of 2 the E.U changes a lot of what they and George Soros have done or it will be a bloody civil war I will pray its the EU change but I can't see it..look at how many times they made Ireland vote. if the EU looked after the EU there borders etc they would not have been a Brexit.
@@johngibson3891, well said. My only caveat is that religion - in public as well as in private - is a fine thing if it is centered on loving God and neighbor. Too easily, however, it is made a badge of tribal identity - or worse, an excuse to do what one would be ashamed to do in his own name. The supermarket bombing you cite is an apt example of the latter, though today the examples are clothed in a different religion altogether.
He was a Irish man who decided to lie about his age to fight in the Great War for Britain and Ireland. Ireland didn't become free until 3 years after the war and became a free state 1921
He was actually 17 but very small for his age . Ireland and her so called patriots hated these boys . Don't come on here trying to airbrush history again
They were not a bit fussy about checking birth certificates . just shows you they would send them up to the front at any age . A great song very sad story . They sent thousands of children to the front to be slaughtered in that war .

At 14 years of age he choose to go and fight for King and country...
Given that he comes from Waterford City, it is unlikely that he joined with the motive of fighting for "King and Country" and more likely he joined in the hope that he and many other Irish soldiers who fought would be rewarded with home rule.
let's not get into whether he did or not and celebrate his young life and give him the recognition he failed to get from his own countrymen.
