    I've repaired many "modern saws" in my life,but I've never messed with a saw that has points,thank you for this information! Even if I can't be a saw mechanic any longer,I still want to learn. Thanks, Tinman,I look forward to your content every day!

    I've worked on small engines for nigh 60 years. Hint: use a snowmobile grip on stout saws, it'll save your shoulder. Recovering from a bad shoulder & I doubt if I'll be able to ever start a really stout saw again. After all these years something finally gave out.

    Thanks for all the info. Got the bug now. Gonna pull apart my light duty Crapsman saw that sucked the crumbling air filter into the carb, clean up the ports and mold marks. Ordered a new carb, timing wheel, calipers, and other items. Then I'll move onto my new 350 Rancher and tweak it a bit. When I feel confident, I'll tackle a very old Homelite beast, probably 70+ y/o.

    Congrats on getting the sack of dolmar running. I can't wait to see how she cuts when you get it dialed. If the carb body is wallered where the throttle shaft passes though, try cutting bushings out of brass tubing. Drill the holes to fit, epoxy in place and hone to size. It's something I adapted from slotcar building. Thanks for the content! Cheers.

    Tinman this timing info is invaluable to the saw community, as the new saws seem to be. Cheap use till they give up and though away😱 or so technical, the average Joe can not work on them. This new playlist your going to do will become great reference material 👍 imho

    My SD123 had no spark,I cleaned under the mount screws area and there is a little room to move the coil closer to the flywheel magnets.Tightened screws while holding coil in the furthest outward position and WA LA blue spark!!

    It would be pretty cool if you sifted through the saws people want you to build for them and pick the interesting ones. You don't seem like the kind of fellow to charge a pretty penny but if you did it could make for some cool videos and maybe could help you get in a bigger shop one day :)

    Great content Tinkan. Some Stihl 064 and 066 had a double keyway flywheel. I will have to mod my red light flat top 066 when the old coil fails. You can't get the red light coil anymore. Thanks for the info.

    Also do you have a lathe? You could potentially remake a the throttle shaft if you did to reconditioned the old carby

  • @jimsworthow531
    @jimsworthow531 ปีที่แล้ว

    So how did you fix it? was it a timing issue all along? I fixed a mcculloch 4-10 that took me a year; it had the dreaded bullfrog carb and beat points/condenser; had to make an intake for it to use a walbro HDC; point is; i love your tenacity to keep at a project and follow a same ethic. Anyway what did you do? thanks.

    i so agree with everything you say. i have been fighting with a few saws with this same problem. old husq saws looked at ign modules and flywheels not old enough for fly wheel adjustment. one was carbon on the piston. the other changing coil and cleaning piston still hard kick back. i dont get to work on saws as big as you. i work on any saw that comes into the shop. How do i get in touch with you?

    I was mucking around with a wakka nusan demolition saw that i have now hung up on the wall as art. As far as i can work out its a dollar chainsaw. I ended up using on of those chip ignition things and couldn’t ever get it to run right. Timing is something that i had over looked. Thanks tin man ill give this a crack.
    I do have a question about it though I’ve been looking for the parts to turn it back in to a chainsaw ie oil pump oil line oil cap chain brake and handle can any one help me with this. I should mention I’m in Australia. Tia

  • @thediddly
    @thediddly ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you strip the chip to figure out what the original one was, how it functions, resistance, polarity etc and make your own?

  • @glennmckinley3058
    @glennmckinley3058 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now's your chance to get that timing number documented with a light. then you can always go back. I find with a saw like that, that very short pulls will save the shoulder. Nobody has any strength when they have 30 inches of cord out. Eventually you have to stop pulling.

    to advance the timing by rotating the flywheel you removed the key?
    so you're running this without a flywheel key?
    you never mentioned this. what's up?
    great show!

    Hey Tinman, are you sure the fuel is leaking from the throttle shaft and not from the H or L screws? When you were pushing on the throttle shaft you bumped your L screw and it looked really sloppy.

    • @tinmanssaws
      @tinmanssaws  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The l is sloppy because its turned out too far. It could be leaking though.

    Does anyone have experience with a Makita/dolmar 7900. I need to upgrade to a bigger saw and it caught my eye ,but the few people I've heard talk about said they were lackluster. I'll only be cutting Australian woods. Should I go with a tried and tested saw or will the dolmar be sufficient?

    • @tylerheard1279

      They are awesome! If you do a serious muffler mod or add a home made pipe, they really rip!

  • @dn0682
    @dn0682 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Tinman, any chance you remember how much you advance the flywheel in relation with the flywheel key? As ignition plate I have it advanced all the way but still nothing. And have you cut new key on the flywheel?
    Regards Dorin.

    • @tinmanssaws
      @tinmanssaws  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This one's like 2 widths of the key advanced

    • @dn0682
      @dn0682 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tinmanssaws Much appreciated for the reply, I think even the chip modules might be little different one to another on releasing the spark, I tried without the key and it fired but flywheel nut undo herself once popped as is not perfect timing. Once again thank you for replying.
      Regards Dorin
