I'd like to say special thanks go out to Palmo Tenzin & her family. Without them this would not have been possible. Thank you Didi for sharing your story, and to Targais and Tsoghspel for keeping us safe on the journey!
The story begins almost 4 years ago. Arseny (my friend for whome I shoot and edit a lot of youtube videos) and I just left a video production company we had co-founded. We were not fulfilled as filmmakers in a super commercial environment. We were both hungry to rediscover our passion for making movies and with lots of time on our hands we started looking for ideas for a documentary film project. We had many, but none really came to fruition. Until one day that is, when we were randomly talking about my dad Dietrich.
You need to understand, my dad is truly one of a kind. “Quirky” would be an understatement. While very smart and charming, he simply lacks the ability to stop talking about everything from nutty business ideas to abstract philosophy or futuristic technology. Like, ever. I often got to experience my dad’s meandering monologues. I had to endure my his ramblings on a constant basis and I was anything but amused. I had heard it all many times over.
My dad’s tales - growing up as an adventurous youngster in the 70s, he had his fair share of stories from far away travels. One of these stories involved him almost dying while hiking solo in the Himalayas. A monk had saved his life. The story in all its details (a princess on a white horse was involved) was so crazy we had never even seriously considered it to be true. But a friend of ours had family nearby and was connected to some people in the region - so Arseny and I decided for the longest of shots and see if someone has heard of this monk whose name, approximate age and monastery we knew.
To our utter disbelief, a few months later our friend’s family actually managed to track someone down who fit the description. And not just that: He even said he might vaguely remember helping a traveler a few decades ago. But! He lived in a remote area with no internet access and only spoke Ladakhi, so all this information was passed to us through 3 or 4 people.
We could have tried to verify it’s actually him first - but where’s the fun in that? We were hungry for a good story, a good movie and some tension. In the hopes it was actually the monk who saved my dad, we went straight to my dad to tell him who we had (probably) found and ask him to join us on one more epic adventure. Could it be that his stories were true after all?
To find out what happened you’ll have to watch the film :) But once we had finished editing it, which in between our other projects took about a year, we ended up with a finished movie and no idea what to do with it. One option was to try to submit it to film festivals or get a streaming provider to purchase it. But between the pandemic and other projects, we simply couldn’t find the will to deal with the paperwork or sales process. It’s a grind and in the end, the movie would end up behind a paywall or something.
The whole reason we made this film is because it was a passion project. A personal story that we went through great lengths to turn into a movie that we’re proud of (in spite of many things not quite working out as planned). We had paid for everything out of our own pockets - so there were no producers putting pressure on us. In the end, all we want to do is share this labor of love. If you watch and enjoy it, that’s all we ever wanted :)
And if you really really like it, share this video. It will make us very happy :)
SPOILER ALERT. One last note on my dad. What you see at the very very end of the movie actually happened. It didn’t last very long though. Only a few months later, Didi returned to Germany for family reasons.

What a heartwarming tale. Only two days you cannot experience, yesterday & tomorrow, l liked that !!. Your documentary a present moment, wonderful moment in the flow of my life. Today I experienced the joy of your tale, your excellent work, the new birth of your relationship with your father. Each moment birth & death arrive in equal quantities, “From the withered tree a flower blooms” an opportunity to live and die fully.

Thank you for showing your film on TH-cam. What a wonderful compassionate thing to do. I feel very privileged to be able to watch it.
I travelled to Nepal over thirty years ago with a small video camera and a solar panel recharging unit my friend made for me that could be carried on our back whilst walking. Before digital cameras. It was a special trip and we finally used some of the footage to raise money for medical training for the local Ani's at a temple way up in the mountains. I didn't think this would happen with my footage which I endlessly struggled with on returning home and spent weeks and months trying to put a film together without much experience or talent for editing.
Your film is so well put together and I'm sure will bring more joy to people than you may realise so thank you again as you have told a wonderful story so well. It was such a treat to see your father's joy overflowing. Well done

Such a heart warming and amazing story indeed that touched my heart and left me in tears after watching. This is the kind of story that shouldn’t be left ignored and submit it to a film festival. The story is so raw and unique. Being a spiritual person I truly understood how life would be when everything turned upside down along your journey. It’s life. And life will teach us a lesson. Surrendering yourself to a simplest way of living is a masterpiece. And DIDI just win it and accomplished his Masterpiece and that’s what I call “Success”. “Life is a journey not a destination”. To my cousin Eypee - you are amazing! Your un-selfish dedication on your father’s story is a brilliant kind of work coz you put tons of love to make an effort for this documentary to happen and shared it to the world without second thoughts. And together with your amazing best friend Arseny(Andong) made the story perfect for the viewers! You guys “rocks”! I salute you! Such a great job.
You know you’ve always been my idol on your filming industry and your talents are extraordinary. Guys thank you so much for sharing this to the world eventhough I already watched it during my Australian roadtrip with Eypee on 2020. And actually met Uncle Didi in Sydney after the roadtrip. It’s still worth to watch this story again and again. So inspiring! 💖

What a beautiful film! Hope your dad is doing well in Zanskar! Moreover, I envy your strength to leave him behind at the end of the film which means not being able to easily stay in contact like others are able to. This step wouldn’t have been possible for me tbh.
Additionally, I hope your film brings in money as well! I don’t wanna know how much the production costs have been - it must have been a fortune!
To me as a German I can easily see this film on ARTE at prime time.
It’s not only wonderful from a cinematic perspective (great colors, perspectives, sophisticated drone shots…) but also from a philosophical and cultural standpoint.
It shows the ups and downs of being a traveller more than any other film I’ve seen so far.
At the same time it also collects the spirit/ essence of the region in a fascinating matter!
I would really like to see a follow up film with your father (maybe also going more into depth into your relationship) but I can also understand if that’s too intimate for you!
It’s definitely one of the best films I’ve seen so far and I’m really glad you allowed us to take part in your journey!
Wünsche dir einen guten Rutsch & herzlichen Dank für deine/eure Arbeit!!!

I am also an elderly German living in Melbourne, Australia....so touched by this documentary. l am speechless.
Sorry, l am not writing in German, the keyboard has no German alphabet.
After my marriage broke down, l also wanted to live by myself in the woods, but l did not dare. I admire this man.
And l absolutely agree with others, this is a unique heartbreaking-heartwarming human story not to be missed.
Thank you for sharing. Universal love, and a satisfying life journey. 🇩🇪🌏🦘🐨
