Storytime: My family made plans for a Disneyland trip back in 92, and accidentally scheduled it for the opening weekend of Fantasmic. Mom likes to remind me that the traffic around the Rivers of America was a nightmare, as this was before they added the terraced walkways to act as a theater. Years later, we were back when they finally switched from cherry picker Bucky to the magnificent animatronic dubbed Murphy. As luck would have it, we were there a year later for the performance where Murphy famously lost his head, and evil triumphed once more. We were seated by the Frontierland docks (disabled seating), and watched as the Mark Twain approached and the costumed cast members were talking to each other in shock. It was hilarious, especially since the lights and music cut when it started making it's round of the river. So, 2012 comes by, and my mom hears about the special 20th anniversary show coming up and wanted to get the merchandise since we were annual passholders. We go to the store in Frontierland to get them, only to be told we had to go wait in a special line outside the park to get a pass to get them, which no cast member had ever mentioned in the day prior when my mom found out about the event. My mom was pissed, and began to recall the events that transpired, being there for the opening and for Murphy loosing his head. The cast member made a phone call, and we were able to walk out with 2 brand new t shirts.
I saw the Fantasmic show over in Japan almost ten years ago. I can't remember that much but one thing that stood out was the dialogue. I was there with my brother and our friend who is Japanese and she was laughing because she couldn't believe how dark it was with Ursola saying "I will kill Mickey Mouse. I will squeeze him until his head explodes." They didn't hold anything back.
@@YesterworldEntertainment Was certainly the first I've heard of it..and a little part of me wishes I hadn't haha, oh how magnificent that would have been.

Fantasmic is the epitome of Disney magic and imagineering imo. It makes me laugh, cry and feel like a child again every time. I hope it never goes away.
Every time I fall into a depressive episode I turn on Disneyland’s Fantasmic and it immediately brings me joy, it truly was a highlight of my Disney park experience growing up and the magic still lives on
The original fantasmic will always be my favorite and I fondly remember many aspects of it like how many more fireworks there were back then and seeing the Ursula float in person.
Steve Skorija, Bruce Healey, and Ken Whitcomb all worked on arrangements for the 2nd movement of IllumiNations. The new theme was composed and orchestrated by Bob Krogstad and the first and third movements were orchestral adaptations of the original Carnival/New World/Laserphonic arrangements that I did. The River Haunt was developed by myself and Adam Bezark following our work on IllumiNations at Epcot. Those are early storyboard drawings and you can see which elements made it into Fantasmic after further development.
Little bit of trivia, when the original version of “Fantasmic” was being developed at Disneyland, “Imagination” wasn’t the only work-in-progress title. They also considered naming the show “Phantasmagoria”.
16:42 I’m surprised you used footage from my channel! I’m honored that you credited me as well. Also, I’m still amazed that my Dad caught that blooper on camera. LOL! Keep up the great work with making attraction history videos!
A friend and I traveled to LA for a weekend to visit Magic Mountain and DL. It happened to be Mother's Day weekend, and we went to Magic Mountain on Saturday, and Disney on Sunday (Mother's Day). On Sunday, we were touring the park and walking toward the queue for Pirates when we saw cast members roping areas off and asked if there was going to be a parade. A cast member told us that there was going to be a sneak preview of a new show, and it would be amazing. She told us where to stand when we came back, and to keep an eye out for any crowds gathering so we could get in or near that good spot (bridge area of the walkway near Pirates). We made it, and what a show! I've seen the show many times since, but I'll never forget that first one! It was something very special to witness!
Disney was a client of my Dad's and he did a lot of work for them including the water mist projections for Pirates of the Carribean (after Dead Man's Chest came out) and also did Madame Leota's face on her crystal ball (after Haunted Mansion premiered). One of my favorite stories he had was while he worked during Fantasmic (wish I remembered the year) and got to see how the Maleficent dragon worked- those flames are produced by igniting DRY COFFEE CREAMER. So weird and cool! Also helped give the flames a more french vanilla scent than a charred woody one.
Fantasmic is easily my favorite part of going to a Disney Park. Everytime I hear the intro song my heart flutters. It along with Illuminations reflections of Earth are pure perfection.
Who else misses the original Disneyland Fantasmic soundtrack? I like some of the new additions but the vocals just aren’t the same, nostalgic sound that I grew to love
Yea, I miss it every time. I would watch Fantasmic both shows every night I visited. Which was sometimes about 50 nights a year. Now I still watch it. But once a trip is ok. Why did they need to add the super dated synth brass and melissa ethridge type vocalist is beyond me. Also can't sit along the riverfront anymore because of how ear piercing jack sparrow is when he's wining about his compass.
The dragon animatronic sounds kind of like the King Kong animatronic from the 1976 film. So much effort to build a 10 story robot and only 3 seconds of usable footage.

I got goosebumps to see you covered this (just found your channel a couple weeks ago). Fantasmic was my all-time favorite Disney experience (show, attraction, movie, food, anything, you name it) as a kid, my family were APs and we watched it every single time we went, which was very often. I know the musical score by heart and almost all of the sequences/dance moves. I could recite the whole thing while listening to the soundtrack, and the outro music that plays when the lights go up still rings out through the promenade pretty often. I was devastated to see the big change after the refurbishment post-galaxys-edge. It really is a totally different show now. I know not all change is bad, I loved the projection mapping and I think it definitely needed an update...but I miss the story, the characters, and most of all, the score. Thanks for covering my favorite, least-discussed show from Disneyland in California!
I remember the early 2001 version of the show, and I loved it so much, I made my parents take me to it twice! But I do wish I could see the updated versions, though. Great vid!
I loved seeing Fantasmic back in the mid-2000's in Disney World. We still have the plastic mug from the show that they served hot chocolate in. It has very nice art on it. A shame ours is all scratched up from going through the dishwasher.
They brought Ursula back sometime during the early 2000s I remember being lil seeing her I was born in 99 they had her for a cool min as I would also go to see tht show it was my fav growing up she was in it until I wanna say sometime before the iron man movie came out thats what I can remember
Got to do a backstage tour of the show on my first ever trip to WDW! It was the coolest experience!!! (I almost fell in the lagoon stepping off the canoe🤦🏻♂️)

Fantasmic was my favorite show at Disney land , I remember my dad driving me home from my grandmas house on the freeway and seeing the coming soon to Disneyland billboard with dragon and being in awe how awesome it looked ! And when I finally got to see it live I loved it to death!
Fantasmic was my favorite show at Disneyland! The summer when I turned 18 and got my drivers license and an Annual Pass, I would take my sister, her best friend, and I the half hour drive to hang out at Disneyland and watch Fantasmic 3 times a week. We'd watch it from the side near the Big Thunder Mountain ride exit, so you could watch the cast and crew prepare backstage. This was the same year I learned that my favorite high school math teacher also worked nights on this show as Captain Hook specifically for this show. ((This man could do a backflip on the spot! He was probably the most popular teacher on campus.)) I have visited Disneyland frequent enough to have seen every iteration of Fantasmic in it's history at Disneyland. The Glow-Up that Maleficient Dragon got from a bunch of rags on a cherry picker to a fully realized animatronic was my favorite, even with her temperamental break downs in her first year. Thank you!! I've been missing Disneyland lately, and this was exactly the nostalgia hit I needed.
Fantasmic is one of my favorite performances in the Disney Parks. I always try to see the show at least twice and I even went to Tokyo Disney Sea just to watch their version of the show. Im glad to see a video in the history of the creation
Oh Murphy - every time I watched fantastic after he was introduced I would place a bet if he was actually going to show. I can’t imagine everything that goes into making him work but I wished he was more consistent.
same! didn’t get to see him the last time i caught the show (which was a while ago now, before the pandemic) and they projected a dragon onto water instead. an okay replacement if you’ve never seen the show but i really wanted to see that big guy in action :’)
Thank you. I vividly remember watching Fantasmic from the Disney Gallery (the balcony above Pirates) in 1995 and seeing Ursula on the water. For years I was wondering where she'd gone, and now I know! I also had a vacation to Disneyland in September/October of 2009 and remember loving the brand new Maleficent Dragon. She worked perfectly the night I saw her. I remember how jarring the WDW version of the show was. The newer version of Fantasmic in Disneyland is good, but I do miss the original version. Even so, I look forward to many more technical advancements and improvements that change and improve the experience!
I'd love if you did one of these with the Electrical Parade. I was lucky enough to march in the Walt Disney World Main Street Electrical Parade with my high school marching band. it was incredible. our band director made sure to stress a few things: you're gonna sweat more (our uniforms were wool with full length pant legs and sleeves), don't look at the crowd, and DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE CASTLE WHEN IT LIGHTS UP. we all looked at the castle when we passed it lmaooooo
WDW also had had that weird lift installed as a plan B for when the Dragon wasn't in the mood to breathe fire. Also in first few years years when Fantasmic was a huge draw for Studios, they used to have CM's do stand up skits and little talent things because you would often need to get to the theater a good hour and a half early for a decent seat.
Phantasmic was the only show my friends and I would bother watching back in the day. Simply blew us out of the water, lol. Quite an impressive accomplishment, given that we usually used those kinds of shows to jump on to as many rides as we could while other guests were busy watching, lol
Even at the age of 19, fantastic makes me cry Bc I have such good memories of it. I always for kinda mad that Mickey never battles Maleficent on his sorcerers outfit in WDW, he just grabs a sword, which is kinda lame. Still, I hope they keep this around for a long time Bc it’s a classic and idk what’s I do if they replaced it.
I know budget-wise it’s probably not very likely, but with the show not operating right now I really hope WDW takes the time to redo and revamp some of the scenes in the Hollywood Studios version of the show, because for as much as I love the soundtrack and ending, that Pocahontas segment really does drag on for way too long, and feels like it was squashed in there from a different show all together.
Great episode as always! I’ve been waiting for the Disney World version to be updated for years. No more of the Pocohontas promotion. Definitely needs something a little more timeless
I have such fond memories attached to Fantasmic. I don't know how old I was when I first saw it (1990 baby here), but it would have been within its first years of operation for sure (I actually think this is the first time it's really clicked with me that little baby me saw Fantasmic when it was still basically brand new). So many trips to Disney I remember us grabbing a spot and saving it for the show towards the end of our night. The Kaa and Chernabog scenes scared the crap out of me at the time though haha. There was one trip where I stood on the trap door on Tom Sawyer's Island and acted out Mickey's part in the show. To this day I always love the times I am able to stop and catch the show, I took my girlfriend to see it for the first time on her birthday the first year we had our passes together, we even did the Blue Bayou dining package. That was something really special. I don't like the newer version as much as the one I grew up with, nostalgia is a powerful thing, but the show never fails to impress. The main theme is an all time classic and the finale version of it especially hits the feels for me something fierce.
That's one of my most favorite things to do is stand on the stage and ride on the boat that they use in Fantasmic. That's where I think the WDW version falls down is it using a bespoke stage. If it's slow enough I love going on the island to open the hatches and look through the holes of the boxes to see which equipment is stored where.
The video ending with “there has been no changes to Disneyland version…but that will change on the soon-ish future” is kind of foreboding with the demise of Maleficent
Michael Eisner looking awkward next to that Maleficent that is way overacting is absolutely the best part of this video.
i mean of course it'd be awkward to have a powerful crazy villain standing next to Maleficent
Agreed, he’s the best and most successful Disney villain by far, poor Maleficent just trying to live her best life next to him

I loved seeing Fantasmic back in the mid-2000's in Disney World. We still have the plastic mug from the show that they served hot chocolate in. It has very nice art on it. A shame ours is all scratched up from going through the dishwasher.
To this day I can still recite the show, word for word. That’s how many times my family and I went to see it.... and listened to the soundtrack
TH-cam gettin real comfortable with these 15 sec no skippable adds
They brought Ursula back sometime during the early 2000s I remember being lil seeing her I was born in 99 they had her for a cool min as I would also go to see tht show it was my fav growing up she was in it until I wanna say sometime before the iron man movie came out thats what I can remember
Got to do a backstage tour of the show on my first ever trip to WDW! It was the coolest experience!!!
(I almost fell in the lagoon stepping off the canoe🤦🏻♂️)
Disneyland’s new fantasmic finally gave us sorcerer Mickey battling the dragon
Some imagination, huh?
indeed
@Disney_Dude1 dude I doubt it's the real deal.
@@disneyboy3030 It's obviously Mickey Mouse that did a fake account as Bob Chapek to troll us all.
@@notthisbutthat more like a person trying to make propaganda to make people mad at Disney. Seriously there is no proof of any rumors towards them and people are using opinions as news. This is all ridiculous.
R u the real Bob? If waz up and kool u r on here. And please check out my disneyland channel too not professional like this. But I am trying #DisneyDiva. All the Bob if this is really u.
I remeber seeing this as a child in the 90s and last year (2019) I took my kids (6 and 4) and I saw how their eyes lit up as they watched.
This was the last thing I saw when I went to Disney world in 2013 , I'd honestly say it was a great way to close out the trip .
Same
Fantasmic was my favorite show at Disney land , I remember my dad driving me home from my grandmas house on the freeway and seeing the coming soon to Disneyland billboard with dragon and being in awe how awesome it looked ! And when I finally got to see it live I loved it to death!
Disneyland’s fantasmic is superior! 💪🏻
HANDS DOWN
No question. It being on the rivers of america makes it feel so much more special than being in a sea world auditorium.
Watching this made me miss working in DLR even more. Working Fan is the best experience and Murphy is the BEST fantasmic dragon
Love the Young Frankenstein video snipit! 👍👍
Brilliant episode, love Disneyland’s Fantasmic simply brilliant
This was a great behind-the-scenes history of one of the most moving nighttime shows in Disney history! Keep up the good work!
I literally LOVED Fantasmic so much as a kid 😭
I remember seeing this park when I was in elementary school( 2007-2008 )Thanks for making this video
He was probably the most popular teacher on campus.))
I have visited Disneyland frequent enough to have seen every iteration of Fantasmic in it's history at Disneyland.
Welp, it's gonna be a very long time till we see him again....or maybe never again :(
Oh my gosh! I always wanted you to do a video on Fantasmic! Thank You so much you made my day!
Also RIP sorcery in the sky. I miss that giant sorcerer Mickey. Haha
Looking at the castle after specifically being told not to is the most band kid thing I’ve ever heard good lord
It also happened to me a few times.
Wow you posted this WAY to soon. Had you just waited 2 years you could have had the now infamous dragon fire in here.
Or the Hollywood Studios change-up.
this is without a doubt, my type of content. adore fantasmic so much!
Phantasmic was the only show my friends and I would bother watching back in the day. Simply blew us out of the water, lol. Quite an impressive accomplishment, given that we usually used those kinds of shows to jump on to as many rides as we could while other guests were busy watching, lol
Holy crap i just got hit with so many memories all at once just from reading the title. Thank you!
You also forgot to mention the dancing fountains, added in 2014, had constant maintenance issues, static until 2017
I remember seeing this, or a similar show, at the Epcot park, Disneyworld, and MGM Studios in 2004.
I remember seeing the show at seven years old and being blown away. All these years later, I'm still impressed.
So I never knew the eyes and mouths of the Pinocchio puppets actually moved until now.
I miss it so much. It’s so hard to not cry during this show
RIP Murphy (Maleficent dragon form)
2009-2023
YEEAAHHHHH BABY!!!!!
Fantasmic! is my favorite attraction/show at all Disney Parks and I'm glad this video showed up!
THANKS MARK!!!!
I love Fantasmic! It’s one of my favorite shows at Disney World. My parents and I see it every time we go.
Gotta love how Michael Eisner looks at Maleficent
I watched Fantasmic the 3 times we went through my childhood and teens
I know budget-wise it’s probably not very likely, but with the show not operating right now I really hope WDW takes the time to redo and revamp some of the scenes in the Hollywood Studios version of the show, because for as much as I love the soundtrack and ending, that Pocahontas segment really does drag on for way too long, and feels like it was squashed in there from a different show all together.

LOOOK OUUUUUUT!!!
LOOOK OUUUUUUUUUUT!!!
*More instrumental music*
Great episode as always! I’ve been waiting for the Disney World version to be updated for years. No more of the Pocohontas promotion. Definitely needs something a little more timeless
Thanks for keeping the magic alive man... this whole year has been a complete blur and surreal.

Outdated, never funny comment has "entered the chat"... please stop, foreigner.
🥰✨Have a magical day ✨🧚♂️@@clvrswine
the score for this show is AWESOME!!!!
Fantasmic is an absolute Disney classic. I do wish they would update and upgrade the MGM studios version, it could use the love.
Really hope Walt Disney World’s version also gets the Disneyland Maleficent dragon animatronic!
The video ending with “there has been no changes to Disneyland version…but that will change on the soon-ish future” is kind of foreboding with the demise of Maleficent
