Came across this by chance. I have a fond memory of meeting Muff when he was with the Spencer Davis Group in Ipswich (Suffolk, UK) in c December or January '65/'66. I was just 14, and my friend and I were too young to attend the local 'Bluesville Club' but used to go down with our autograph books to see if we could meet any of the amazing performers who regularly appeared there. The night SDG were due to perform they invited us in to watch them set up prior to the show. Handsome Steve, all of 17 and pimply, clearly wasn't interested in talking to us mere 'kids', but Muff in particular was so sweet and kind, chatting away to us. He told us the funny story (which I've since seen repeated here on YT somewhere) about how their Mum thought it would be good for Steve to come on tour with his big brother's rhythm'n'blues group, because it would 'keep him out of trouble' at home! (That may have been the first and last time someone's parents seriously thought joining a rock'n'roll (etc) band would keep their rebellious teenager on the straight and narrow, but still...) They even tried hard to persuade management to let us stay to see the show, but sadly, they were adamant; the licensed bar on the premises meant a minimum age of 18. IIRC, their first hit record, 'Keep on Running' hit No 1 in the UK charts that same week, or very soon after... Muff is one of the greatest ever. Wonderful no-nonsense guy who tells it like it is. The Sade signing alone is one of my favorite industry stories of all time. Legend!
Muff is great. Very no nonsense, down to earth. I was in a band signed to Portrait and later Epic in the mid 1980s. I will never forget playing songs to Muff who was very honest in his opinions. Because it was Muff we listened. My band didn't get anywhere - such is the casino wheel nature of the music industry - but it was a fantastic experience to have Muff guide us and advise us. A true gent too. All the best Muff....
