  • We have had a number of different events over the last few months featuring Sony's F65 camera. The F65 offers unparallelled 8k resolution and produces stunning 4k imagery. We've done a lot of testing with it, and found both the resolution and dynamic range to be off the charts. For all of you that were not able to attend our events, I put together this short video covering some of the big features of the camera; stay tuned for future videos on workflow and data management.

    UPDATE Question Please: This camera came with an 8K senser, which, to my knowledge, has never been given the processing and recording capabilities to register an 8K image (??) Will the Sony F65 ever receive the upgrades to be able to actually process and record anymore than 4K video from its 8K senser ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

      There were originally plans to allow you to extract an 8096 x 2160 image from the RAW files using Sony's Raw Viewer software, but it was never implemented. I don't know if it's still in the works, but if it is, it'll be a Sony Raw Viewer software update, not an update to the camera.

    If what you say is true then Peter Jackson made a huge mistake on the biggest films since the LOTR by choosing Red Epic cameras.

  • @Erzmann255
    @Erzmann255 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This camera is by far better then the Red One. In contrast to the Red One, the F65 produces REAL 4K instead of the Beyer-Crap that the Red cameras produce. Also, this is the very first camera that has higher dynamic range than ACTUAL 35mm film, better colour response than film (and thus ALL digital cameras to date) and also, it has no issues with rolling shutter. So, all in all, this is by far the best camera that the world has ever seen.

    The F65 uses a sensor which is rotated 45 degrees. This means that the grid of photosites cannot be counted in the same left/right, up/down resolution count of other sensors.

    Used correctly, the Red Epic can provide very beautiful footage, moreover, they are smaller and therefore easier to be mounted on a 3D rig. And the F65 is a completely new camera, not many people have worked with it and I think that's the reason why he chose the "safer" option. (And the F65 wasn't even released when the Hobbit went to production.) I just hope for Avatar 2 to be shot on it, Cameron has always been a bit of a sony fan ;)

    RED always makes overzealous claims while Sony tends to make conservative claims. Let's see some independent tests before saying Red "wins". Alexa is currently the most used camera in Hollywood .. certainly not RED.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying RED cameras are bad cameras.
    The Dragon Sensor provides 15 stops of latitude, yes. But the current RedEpic provides only 13. The F65 has proven 14 stops, but Sony is a very modest company. It's closer to 16, but that's hard to measure, really.
    60%? more like 25%.(5120x2700vs.4096x2160) and you still have to do the math: Each of those pixels comes from a single photosite for either blue, green or red. essentially that reduced you resolution by a factor of 0.33.

    List price is about 65K, but for a more accurate quote, the best thing to do would be to contact one of our sales people directly. - Hope that helps!

    Is it better than the Red Epic, which is being used to film The Hobbit?

  • @lightmanfilms
    @lightmanfilms 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of an image to the height of the image but it is not related to the sensor resolution. You can have a 4:3 image with 4K resolution sensor is it was possible though unusual. When we speak about aspect ratio we usually refer to display pixels. Not the actual photosites of the sensor. Sensor pixels array or photosites resolution is actually 8192 x 2160 (aspect ratio 3.80:1). but because i down samples the image and technology is limited in 4K is called true4K

      Garry John how are these cameras better than dslrs?

    • @TimelineProvision
      @TimelineProvision 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** lol I'm being serious....I've seen dslrs with the same quality images so I just wanted to know what makes this so special.
      are all those buttons necessary...

    • @TimelineProvision
      @TimelineProvision 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Ok I understand, but DSLR'S beat some of the old films which were filmed on tape yet those were designed for films. most of them IF NOT ALL weren't even HD.
      I do respect the traditional film look, honestly I do, but alot of post can correct the film look. plus, DSLR's can shoot in raw now and some Dslrs can be done using magic lantern to shoot raw. alot of these very expensive camera don't even shoot at 120fps for slow motion. So is it really worth the money?

      @pipi333 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TimelineProvision TP obviously you haven't shot so much to come to this conclusion.

    • @TimelineProvision
      @TimelineProvision 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pipi333 I've actually shot alot. But It's personal preference. To be honest thequality has actually ruined most horror and thriller genre IMO.

    You guys should do more on HFR (higher frame rates) it will be all the rave be the end of the year and after Hobbit goes to screen. It does look so much better.. Does this camera do HFR? you did not cover. Also, to tell the truth, 4K is more then enough for Cinema. 2K does 80% of the screens out there. So, it is tech like HFR that consumers are going to see the most difference and as such, drive demand.

    As the man in the industry you should know that sound is very important. Your speech is hurt my ears although i thank for this overview of this decent unit. Sony makes great cine-cams, great but for playback of 4k content I'd rather hook up Barco projector with brand new 4k DMD chip form TI. Just my $0.02

  • @Erzmann255
    @Erzmann255 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    But that's still a much higher resolution than we really need in theaters today. The REAL problem with the RED Epic is that it has issues with color. (Watch Peter Jackson's Hobbit vlogs, he talks quite a bit about that.) There is a design error somewhere in the sensor that basically reduces the cameras ability to tell blue from yellow, that's where the (in-)famous RED-look comes from.

  • @tenissabbalas
    @tenissabbalas 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    So what IS the actual resolution of the F65 sensor? If we multiply 8192 by 2160 that gives us 17,694,720 million active photosites. In the F65 manual Sony says the aspect ratio is 17:9 which means the F65 has a 5782 x 3060 sensor. That is plenty of resolution for a nice 4k debayer but it is definitely not 8k.

    @AmsterdamHustler The question is; Is this camera better than the Red One that only costs less than 20K? Hollywood movies are made with Red One

  • @celpabedn
    @celpabedn 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    What would be the cheapest you can get to shoot your own movie and it will still look decent, do you really need 30000€ plus camera or are 3000-10000 area also something to take upon?

    yes, far better. The Epic Basically has the same issues that the Red One has.

  • @Erzmann255
    @Erzmann255 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You don't edit with the 8K Material. You use Proxi-Edit with 2K Files, produce an EDL which is then used in a propriatary program to export the fnished movie.
    Also...The F65 is for absolutely top of the line professionals. These people use Avid, not FCP or Premiere.

      +blackassboy There's a VF Menu button that brings up a more detailed menu in the viewfinder. You can see it in the top right at 6:10 in the video. Then you use the knob to scroll through and select your menu option.
