Where is trauma stored in the body? SPECIAL TOPIC LECTURE.

  • In this special topic lecture, I cover what is my current understanding of 'where trauma is stored in the body.' This lecture is based on my professional and personal experience, as well as keeping an open eye and ear on new findings and ideas from others who are immersed in the fields of healing and wellness. One thing is for certain: our traumas and survival energies are definitely stored IN the body, and for each person how that happens, where that happens, and how they are released and integrated is very much based on the individual and their capacity, as well as mastery, to be with their human experiences in all their colour, wonder, and pain. I once heard Jordan Peterson say that the best way to learn and dissect a topic is to teach it, and that is what I offer you in this lecture. Thank you for being here and continuing to learn. Enjoy!

    I'm working my way through burnout and resetting my base line boundaries so to speak.
    I thought I was imagining things when after a meditation session I apologized to my nervous system for over riding my autonomic safety warnings.
    This created an enormous shift. The somatic journey begins 😊

    I am so shocked a 46:55 but it does explain so much. My physical issues manifested after I have cut off my toxic family. I thought it was because that is when I realized the extent of how badly I was treated, but maybe it was just the comfort of knowing none of those experiences will ever happen to me again, so the release begun.

      Hi Krissy, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes! That is often the way it goes. It's like the body finally has permission to start letting go, because it instinctively senses the safety we have created.

    Everyone you mention infact every trauma, and ever abuse in the book except death, Physical, mental, emotional, sexual, religious, dysfunctional family, and I’m 75 now, been working my socks off since 37 years old, started meditation.
    Stood outside post office this morning for half an hour waiting fir it to open in panic, and tried all the things like breathing, tapping, eyes movements, you name it.
    Then changed tactic and said okay I accept this. I know you have been working for me all my life to keep me safe. I stayed with the feelings in awareness, I said I love, thank you, and I started to feel loving, calmer.
    I saw by acceptance, and inner awareness it helped loads. My gut has been tight since I was 5 years when I started school as I can remember. I still suffer irritable bowel where my bowels empty, in shops mainly.
    But I’m pretty fit my age, never took medications since in my late 20s and was given antidepressants and Ativan at another time, both I put down the toilet in the end. I’ve done inner child shadow work, for the last seven years, and I do inner body work, fir many years, and can feel everything inside my body, and now looking at Neuroplasticity, that’s why I’m here. Is there any hope. I don’t trust, anyone, or anything.

    I just feel so sorry and horrified of the fact that people really do put their babies to cry alone into a dark room until they sleep. I ve spent fair amount of time in asia with some very poor people; they never left their babies alone, never!

      A friend of mine would put her baby down to have afternoon naps and leave him alone in his room even if he was crying (it was daytime so it wasn’t dark at least). I used to go in and talk to him and let him hold onto my finger while he fell asleep. I noticed that even having someone there with him made him stop crying, he was okay being in the bed to fall asleep for a nap, but I think he just didn’t want to be alone.. 😞

      Do you have a baby of your own? I would never dream to have done this but when you lose 6-7months of sleep and have nothing left in your self it’s hard we need time to recover and self soothe also it’s hard raising a baby.

I aleady watched the 4-videos course and plan on doing 21 day before SBSM. I've been working on a psychological and energetical level but all this makes so much sense and the necessity to process it in the body. I am glad you spoke about the car accident. When I was a teen, I met a boy who tried to have sex with me immediately on a date. We barely knew each other, I fought him off and he began to drive and we had a car accident. I hit the windowsill with my head and found a phone to call my father to come get me. He came and took us to the nearby hospital. I had already had had "wrestling matches" with several boys Plus my dad was my early attacker.
    I was alright after the checkup and I don't remember anything after that.

    That is very interesting about trauma being stored in the water in the cell. When I sweat, my sweat doesn’t smell. But when I am have trouble sleeping, and it’s a restless fight to fall asleep and stay asleep (only sleeping 30-60 minutes at a time and never making it to REM-no dreams) I very often wake up drenched and that sweat reeks soooo bad. It smells like onions to me. My husband and I work different shifts and when he gets home all he has to do is open the bedroom door and e can smell it. At no other time, do I smell like that, not even after a workout

    The part about remembering cigarette smoke is something I can relate to as my mom smoked while I was in utero. I also experienced a traumatic time there and got out via c-section. I have suffered from several claustrophobia my whole life (heard somewhere that such could be related) and severe separation/abandonment anxiety from my mom. As a 36 year old today I'm learning a lot about myself by each day, my nervous system and my traumas. My mom is still very emotionally distant today like she's always been, so I can't have any talks with her about it and my dad is not here anymore. I've struggled with self esteem issues as well as my sexual attraction - towards very dominant yet emotionally unavailable women - who smoke just like my mom. I'm currently recieving IFS therapy for this but I don't think it will move the needle much as far as the part of me that wants to be in a female led relationship with a dominant woman in order to feel safe. I'm taking a drivers seat position in my life now because there will be no one to save me but me. I won't let myself down ever again.

    Yeah I was thinking of your definition of trauma as I hear more and more people talking about how birth itself is a traumatic experience for humans - which is interesting since not technically if we think about a healthy attuned human meeting the baby on the other side

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Liz, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes! It is totally possible to have a non-traumatic birth. It just requires that, in most cases, the parents do a LOT of healing work first, and become educated about what actually supports a safe, healthy birth and what does not.

  • @ejemama
    @ejemama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    What would your recommendation be for parents, who followed the wrong parenting philosophies and neglected a crying baby, to help that now child heal? We've done a lot of work to help him (quieting, validating, etc) and he has improved so much, but he still often lives with a sense that he is alone and unsafe at times.

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hi Kristy - Mara here with Team Lyon. To help a child recover from times when parenting was less safe than might be ideal, the very best way to proceed is by working to build your own regulation as a parent. Kids sense when we are stressed. They sense when we are grounded, connected, and relaxed. As parents begin to grow their capacity, kids sense safety and may show old hurts that they didn't feel safe to express when they were younger. All we need to do is stay present for them, lending them our regulation as they slowly build theirs over time. It's never too late.

    Thanks for the talk Irene. My digestive system is totally broken down. I do believe this has to do with trauma. I would love to understand why or how I could send the trauma to my digestive system? Is this a common response? What is it about the stomach and actually feeling nervous? I so need to do the SMSB.

      In neuroscience the gut/brain axis is huge. There is a visceral, hormonal, neurotransmitter, microbiome connection of it all. Constant and powerful influence between the brain and gut. All systems are powerfully connected.
      GI issues are very often associated with trauma, far more than anything else…on a direct level and an indirect level (like those who comfort eat, drink alcohol…to self soothe…and those habits effect the GI tract microbiome therefore they neurotransmitters etc, it is all connected).
      The studies on this in the last couple decades is amazing and hopefully standards of care will reflect this. Functional medicine practitioners are more likely to pay attention to the whole picture & the patient as an individual.
      The limbic system and how the autonomic nervous system works, can explain the feeling of nervousness in the stomach and elsewhere. On a biochemical level, there is so, so much going on. Our bodies are a miracle and really, really try to stay in homeostasis (balance) and try hard to tell us when a need isn’t being met, or alert us to perceived threats. The sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight) is that part of the autonomic nervous system that communicates with the rest of the body to fight or flee…and you feel it in your body.

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi MsBeauregard1975, Seth here with Team Lyon. Great answer here from Enigma already. To put it very simply - the autonomic nervous system that governs the survival responses which get stuck in the system due to trauma (fight, flight, freeze), also governs all other autonomic processes such as digestion, barrier keeping in the gut, heart rate, breath, endocrine function, etc.. When there is a large portion of that autonomic system highjacked by survival energy, there is then less energy to perform all those other really important functions properly, and/or, the 'instructions' become inaccurate due to the influence of those survival energies. And YES! please join us for SBSM, we'd love to have you!

      iv found bothmeditation and changing my diet helpful (i'd start with paleo version of AIP -auto-immune protocol) would be a good place to start. you may need the FODMAP diet. My personal best results came when iv been eating a paleo-keto AIP diet
      it stopped me being bedridden
      Gut issues/diet was the strongest contributory stressor to ME/CFS making me bedbound. 3 months on that diet n i was able to do 1hr walks, i even felt like id gained IQ points from pre-illness!
      The diet is inherently anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic & pathogenic viral/bacterial/fungal, stabilises the micro-biome populations & repairs gut lining and is neuro-protective.
      It has helped my dysregulated ANS to calm down as well.
      CPTSD is the underlying reason as to why i developed ME/CFS n i just shut up n put up with too much for too long, incl gut issues.
      It maybe ud find going carnivore to be the best 1st step to healing
      But typically, you need to stop eating starches, carbs n dairy as they feed the pathogenic organisms in the microbiome and contribute to inflammation n hence 'leaky gut' n then ur whole body ends up feeling poisoned (which i only noticed once my leaky gut was healed with paleo-keto-AIP) The food particles leaking out of the gut lining can cause a cascade of symptoms and causes the immune system to attack the body
      the best single-source that contains most of the info ive learnt, the place i direct people to learn from as a starting place re paleo-keto is dr sarah myhill's website. yes she specialises in ME/CFS, but we have myriad co-morbidities n so she covers everything from gall-bladder issues to thyroid to pancreas and more

    Great video Irene thanks. Is watching a loved one die in distress suddenly, perceived as a threat to our own life, as we inevitably put ourselves into their heads and imagine their suffering and pain as if it were happening to us?

      Roads to Freedom, Jen here from Team Lyon. Witnessing a loved one die in distress will impact each of us differently depending on a number of factors, and it could certainly a possibility that it might be perceived as a threat to one's safety and to one's life for different reasons, including the one you describe.

      hey Jessica, Seth here with Team Lyon. Sorry to hear that happened to you. Yes, is can be very scary and retraumatizing if that happens without understanding what is going on, or if we haven't yet developed the capacity and/or don't have the tools to work with it. It is quite common that the body will try to release these energies naturally, but because of these circumstances instead of it being the healing process it could be, it just causes more pain, and the survival energy gets stuck even further.
      Processing these energies successfully requires the right education, practices, and support, which is what we offer in our online programs, so if you feel those things would be helpful for you I encourage you to check them out! Hi. I have a question about orienting. Should I do this everyday? And for how long? Last year I noticed I couldn't move my eyes left and right, I started doing research and found some exercises that were helpful. Looking slowly around the room, looking at distance etc. They were very helpful. I then started to have really bad neck pain and tinitus. I have started again to do the orienting you suggest and moving my head when I naturally feel like it and the pain in my neck and tinnitus subsided straight away Movement has also become easier in my neck. I just wondered what you recommend for orientating as sometimes I've done it and the next day my system is in overload. Can I join the 21 day classes at anytime? Thank you

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lori G, Jen here from Team Lyon. It's great to hear that you saw improvements from orienting in the way that Irene guides! You asked about how often to do it - the answer depends on your system. If you do it and the next day your system is in overload, then that's usually a sign to do less. Over time, we want to move towards weaving orienting into how we move though daily life and this can be a moment or two at a time. And yes, you can join the 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up at any time.

    Hi, I'm in the 21 day course with just a few days left. I've also done 4 months with somatic movement. Yesterday when I was out walking I felt a deep sense of being free like a weight was lifted off me. When I got home from the walk I got a huge reaction on my skin on both my tighs.. A burning red rash appared. Which I never have had before. Could this be a sort of release of trapped sensation?

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Inger, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes! This is the kind of thing we see all the time in this work. A rash, or redness, bumps, etc... all of this is a very common sign of held sympathetic charge releasing. The thighs are significantly involved with the fight/flight response, so it sounds like the fact that you were mobilizing those muscles in the context of feeling that profound sense of increased safety and freedom allowed something that has been held to release.

      @@somethingnice9800 - yes! the freeze state instructs the body to bring blood away from the limbs and into the torso, and also numbs the extremities - from an evolutionary standpoint this is to protect the vital organs, and to numb the mammal to the experience of being gnawed on. So when we are living with unresolved freeze in our system, it very often has this effect as those instructions are being relayed all the time, underneath the surface.

    Dear Irene, is integration of early childhood reflexes part of the program? thanks for your great and inspiring work!

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anna. Seth here with Team Lyon. We don't focus specifically on this, but there are MANY lessons that support these kinds of integrations should they be ready to arise organically. Since it's all about working with the body and using many approaches to explore what we are holding, or what may need to happen that didn't happen, early childhood reflexes, and other stored imprints such as incomplete procedural memory (self-protective responses) often do arise for people to work with.

    I think its stored in several places, but quite often deep in the psoas. Has anyone tried/suggested TRE alongside with SE with success?

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jeff, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes indeed, trauma is stored many places and in many ways. A chronic contraction of the psoas is not uncommon. There are some people who have gotten results with TRE, but we do not recommend it in general, as the underlying principle of TRE is to support the body in producing a tremor response, and we have found that this happens all by itself, without postural interventions, in it's own time when it's ready when the person has a good, cohesive, informed, and well-supported approach to their healing, like we offer in Irene's online programs. Sometimes allowing that tremor response to happen is literally the LAST thing we want to support, as there can be all kinds of emotions, behaviours, postural dynamics, and more associated with the contraction, and ALL of that has to be addressed. When a tremor is forced without this cohesive approach it can blow the system up and make things worse - and this is the most common story I hear from people who try TRE, and then come see me. Here's an article I wrote about this subject if you'd like to learn more - sethlyon.com/no-exercise-heals-trauma/

    Help. I’ve had so much trauma going all the way back to the fear and shame my pregnant mom felt at age 16. Age 2 I had a fever of 104 nurses tied me down to bed put iv in my arm. Age 5 divorced, dad left state cuz I wasn’t worth paying child support for. Mom married a drug dealer/addict, I became the adult at age 10. Terrible car accident age 15, lost all my top teeth, friend permanently brain damaged. Age 13 thrown from horse amnesia nobody took me to dr. Major dental work as child till now. At age 14 mom‘s boyfriend was drunk and dragged my mom by the hair into my bedroom and hold a knife to my throat. Our house was arson and partially burned down, someone tried to break in to my home and my mom was out partying as a man crawled across the roof to get into the open window I set off the burglar alarm thank God. Finally got married had two children then listen to my Then husband complain every night over dinner about how much he hated his job. Then my mom died shortly after my beloved grandmother died when my grandfather died and I sunk into a deep pression. My husband didn’t want to deal with it so he had me log to the psych ward. If I left he would divorce me. Two years later he finally did divorce me it was horrible custody battles he took all the money. I had emergency appendicitis an emergency gallbladder removal which was botched.Was in two accidents were large deer hit me and totaled my cars. Now my ex and his wife or doing what’s called parental alienation and they’ve convinced both of my children that I’m a horrible mother and an evil messed up person and my kids no longer want to have anything to do with me. I’ve been suicidal, the multiple therapists all the medication nothing worked for very long except Ketamine and Spravato which I could no longer afford to continue. I am now experimenting with plant medicine but the trauma it’s in my body and I don’t know how to get rid of it. I know you don’t see patients anymore but can you recommend anyone near where I live?I have major trust issues and can’t open up unless I know somebody has been recommended by people that I respect. I’m beginning to lose hope anything will work.I try to qualify for studies but I’m always disqualified because I take pain medication for chronic pain. People are always trying to scam me with their latest tonic or therapy treatment. I don’t have any money I’m on disability now which took forever and was extremely traumatic. Sorry I Vented all of that but I trust you after watching your videos and I agree with everything you’re saying about trauma. Please help me get rid of it

    #1 what about pet (flea and tick) medicine? I am not sure what to do, not only don't want to touch it myself although I can wear gloves, how could I do it to my fur babies knowing how toxic it is, and how can I not? I do have some ferals outside, I manage to get just close enough to quickly put it on before they notice (the liquid on back of neck). I wouldn't be able to rub any non toxic in that quickly.
    #2 I was extremely traumatized by having Covid in January of 2022. I did think I was going to die, and sometimes still do. I have long Covid symptoms (what they call tremors but It feels like a switch is on that Never shuts off, even when I sleep. I've found I have other things that can be fibromyalgia and adrenal fatigue which I feel can be healed with these methods. However, knowing we don't know wtf Long Covid is or whether these symptoms are mind body trying to heal or whether some synthetic is causing symptoms? I don't know, do you have any insight on it? I do have nerve damage from it.

      @kellidoty1, Jen here from Irene's Team. Great to hear you're loving Irene's channel!
      I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Covid - it sounds very frightening. We're still learning more about Long Covid, and while I can't offer anything definitive, it could definitely be worth exploring the potential impact of underlying sympathetic activation. Growing capacity can be important too when we're going through a lot, and where fibromyalgia and AFS are involved. I'll link to a related video in case you want to check it out.
      You also asked about the flea and tick medicine. That's outside my area of expertise and you might consider consulting with a holistic vet to see if they have suggestions on that front.
