Eric Johnson is the master of fast pentatonic solo patterns.

Guitar Player Magazine May 1986 issue, "Who is Eric Johnson and why is he on our cover?" with Flexi-Disc insert of Cliff's of Dover was my introduction to Eric Johnson. Never looked back, this guy is amazing and when I first heard him sing it was different and refreshing. Like others have said when you see him play why do I even try, lol. Hope you guys continue down the Eric Johnson rabbit hole and come out saying that's why he was on that cover!

Thanks for giving Eric some much needed attention. Being from Austin, TX, I grew up with this Album which had heavy airplay on Austin radio. I actually had my CD sighed by him at an in store appearance and he’s such a great, humble guy for being such a virtuoso. His first Album, Tones, along with Ah via M., are two of my favorite albums of all time. Criminally overlooked and underrated for many years, believe it or not, but of course a lot of guitarists know who he is now with some help from G3. He really should have been much bigger. I guess many people know Cliffs Of Dover which I think was grammy nominated, but all his songs are unbelievably good. I remember he toured with Rush back in the day., but yeah every song on Ah Via is great, not one weak song and it’s just a masterwork of different soundscapes, styles, and textures. I hear a lot of Hendrix influence in his playing as well, most obviously with the feed back stuff he had going on.

Great that you reacted to EJ!! Being from Austin, Eric's home, we have the fortune of seeing him live every year as well as occasional record store appearances. Cliffs of Dover is his most popular composition, but if I were to introduce someone to Eric's music I would start with this as the two guitar solos are amazing and the scales are phenomenal!!! Eric has over 35 years of music, and has appeared on the cover of Guitar Player magazine several times and more importantly has had several special series of Fender Stratocasters issued in his name! And he's extremely appreciative to his fans, really nice person!!

Hi, I love Eric Johnson. This is such a brilliant track. His style and tone is wonderful and yes the guy can sing. If you like this track as you obviously do then checkout his album " Venus Isle" - Should you play from track 1 which is the title track, there will be little point in you doing a reaction to it - because you will not be able to stop. I don't mean pause during a reaction. I mean you wont be able to stop playing the entire album. It's simply majestically wonderful music and his singing fits perfectly with that soaring guitar sound. Track 1 Venus Isle and that's it - I promise you wont stop. Just enjoy it for yourselves. Thankyou for this. Kinda surprised it took you guys so long to get to Mr. Johnson. Better late than never I guess.
Much like David Gilmour, Eric is widely regarded as a ‘tone monster’. And he’s just as talented a singer and songwriter as he is a guitarist.
You really need to check out basically ANY track from his previous album “Tones”. That’s the one that really put him on the map. When it was released, Guitar Player magazine featured him on the cover with the caption “why is this man on our cover?” (cuz he was a complete unknown at the time…).

Living in Austin in the mid-70s, Eric was our jazz-rock guitar hero, in the band Electromagnets - they were flat-out great. Frank Zappa called them "A Mahavishnu Orchestra with a sense of humor." You can find a live performance recorded at a public TV station in Atlanta and uploads of their 2 albums if you search for "Eric Johnson and Electromagnets" on TH-cam. I'm more inclined to instrumental music myself, so I was sad when that band broke up and Eric made what I thought was the questionable decision to sing, LOL, and move in a more commercially-acceptable rock direction. But he never stopped being a great guitar player, that's for sure!

His non trebly distortion tone has been compared to a 500 lb. violin. They used to call him the Tone Ranger because he could tell what brand of batteries were in his stomp boxes by the sound. His voice always reminded me of a Bryan Adams with no grit in his voice. Among other things he's a big Hendrix fan, and I remember he said that some guitar tones on this song were inspired by Hendrix's "House Burning Down", and created by using 2 flanger pedals on different settings. He also plays like Wes Montgomery sometimes - see "Manhattan". I wanted to choose something besides "Cliffs Of Dover".

"Tone Ranger because he could tell what brand of batteries were in his stomp boxes by the sound" Hahaha! :D That sounds about right! The only other guy I can think of that _may_ be more tone obsessed is Tom Scholz (Boston).

@@mvunit3 Thanks again for the playlists. Now that what at first looked like 3 playlists has expanded to 10 plus reading material, I'm afraid that (since I'm over 70) I might not live long enough to go through it all, even if I skip the artists I already know. I'm sure that since my tastes aren't going to evolve instantly, I won't like a certain percentage of it right away, but thanks for this great resource. I'll take it slow, because right now I'm feeling daunted by the time it's going to take to go through it all. You know how much time and effort went into it, so you must have a sense of what it is like for a person to be confronted with this amount of material at once.

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@-R.Gray- - Don't let it be daunting, these playlists are for those that I have understood and sense that people will like a good chunk of the bands/tracks, and be enlightened of what is out there from the past and present. Just let it flow and enjoy the ride. Each track I add to playlists I put together like a puzzle, they are meant to "flow" together, as I don't just add tracks willy-nilly after each other (not made to put on "shuffle" ;).
That is part of the fun of putting these playlists together. And I have others that have a conceptual "theme" or subject matter.
I think, if you liked Caligula's Horse, and enough to suggest a reaction, that type of "Metal"/Prog Metal, and its tone, layers, transitions, heaviness . . . then you'll be into many more bands than you think (from that moment when writing your reply). Just look at each playlist as if you were listening to the Radio on a long trip :).
      - I hope you enjOy the journey :).

    • @-R.Gray-
      @-R.Gray- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mvunit3 I guess I am destined to find a bunch of music I like. The Caligula's horse song wasn't chosen because I was a fan of the group. It was a replacement of a Pat Metheny song I had as a NicknLex's under 25 min. paid-for request selection. I thought the original song might not have enough content and variety, so I needed to find a replacement song between 10 and 25 min.. I remembered that Jim Newstead had quite a few long songs on his reaction channel and I remembered seeing an impressive song there, but I couldn't recall the name of the group. I never did find that song. I clicked on "Graves", and didn't see any reason to look any further. So besides listening to your playlists, I still have to check out Caligula's Horse's other music - but I haven't found the time. I started listening to a playlist, but I wasn't just listening as if to a radio - I was looking up the bands as I went, so this is pretty time consuming. Maybe I should just research the groups that impress me the most.
Try to imagine yourself 15 years from now, with an undetermined length of time left. Would whether or not a piece of music aligned itself with, and possibly transformed your musical conditioning be as important to the overall picture of your life as it is now? Come to think of it though, that's exactly what I've been doing myself with my requests - trying to expand peoples' knowledge and enjoyment by exposing them to music I like.

Emerald oder Boys are back in town)

Seen Eric 3 times! I love this man. When you watch his How-To videos . . .
You wanna' look at your guitar carefully, then just toss it on the floor :P. You guys MUST see the videos of Eric Johnson on Austin City Limits, together. Both you Nick and especially Lex will be BLOWN away.
This is one of my FAVORITE tracks on this album. And I am going to say it; Eric has one of the MOST underrated "Vocals" out there (I'm a big fan of Vai's voice too). His voice is very unique, and goes _perfectly_ with his guitar tone. I always love it when he does those "pinch-harmonics", and how he changes sounds with his stomp boxes, even for just a second, just to add another layer, as if its 2 guitarists.
He is an amazing guitar player. Been into him since his album "Tones", btw - he is also an excellent pianist :).

You Could "Come Dancing", if your Wired by Jeff Beck. You know, dancing, shaking to the beat of a different drummer.
