The Toronto Maple Leafs lost 6-3 last night to the Ottawa Senators in the battle of Ontario. Afterwards, coach Sheldon Keefe commented on the teams defensive game which he believes has "gotten out of control" We take a deep dive into why the Leafs are struggling & how the issue is bigger than just one player.
Follow Jack Han on Twitter for some incredible breakdowns. He’s got some of the more insightful stuff on the platform.
jh...
Finally some REAL analysis. All too often the cliche warriors love to spit out the usual fare... they are too top heavy... not enough depth... they need to get tougher... they just need to get to the net. You hear it from every fan base in every market especially Toronto. So happy to see someone who gets it try and educate what the players are actually trying to do in the game. Great job!
Rather than the angry drunken rantings of people who complain that Matthews or Marner aren't fighting enough, or they don't care about winning the Cup, or the team is too woke. Indeed, this actually taught us something.
@@insignificantspeckofdust1214 congrats on proving OP's point
This one could've been summed up with "puck watching".
Oilers: “First time?”
We in the same boat, except that the oilers are in deep shit record wise
😂😂
@@rafaelxamorim9816the Leafs have both the time and assets to fix the problem where the Oilers are running out of time and don't have the assets.
@@rafaelxamorim9816The leafs are as well, considering they’re going to lose 8 out of their next 10.
No kidding. Oilers this season are evidence enough that outscoring your mistakes only takes you so far. Their luck has run out.
It's hilarious that the top two teams to win the cup before the season started based on betting odds(leafs, oilers), have terrible D and Goaltending. When was the last time a team with terrible D and Goaltending won the cup? The odds makers are out of their minds.
They have been the top 2 teams for the past like 2-3 years.. lol leeafs have been there for longer, but again anybody with a brain knows that neither one of those teams were winning anything
No team wins the SC with below average goaltending AND defense. But neither team was below average in either last season. Skinner was good and their defense was above average once Ekholm arrived. Toronto was objectively above average all season last year and Samsonov was good in net. Odds makers are a lot more knowledgeable than the average fan.
Canada being delusional as always.
Good point, look at montreal. They were terrible and went to the finals with Price. Price was like a madman and no one could figure him out.
@neeltheother2342 It's not delusional, it's the truth. Unfortunately, Canada doesn't have Bettman in their pocket like America does.
Edmonton in shambles, Toronto struggling all while the Canucks are shining and the Sens are slowly building up. Interesting times.
Toronto has been struggling for 50 years
@@lobear3074 what he means was edmonton was a cup contender and the sens have been horrible for A VERY LONG TIME.
@@lobear3074 ya no... we had good runs in the late 90s early 2000s

The Habs are the Habs
this is why i subscribed to this channel. awesome analysis!
The leafs are facing similar problems to Edmonton: bad defence/goaltending/coaching. Unlike the oilers, their stars are actually showing up though. Which is why they’re still in a playoff spot
I would not have predicted that McDavid and Draisaitl would start like this.
Pretty sure that McJesus is not 100%. Could you imagine what kind of odds you'd get if you bet someone in September that after a dozen games, the Canucks would be #3 overall and that the Oil would be #31. They'd be giving you 10 to 1. Such a bizarre season so far!
Watching Klingberg play reminds me of the time I volunteered to play one game as a D-man when my 4th grade house league team was shorthanded during a blizzard.
Glad you know what systems they're trying to play because no one else including the players know. Great breakdown love it
Lmao I was thinking the exact same thing
Who knew that acquiring offensive defenceman would lead to bad defence
An eternal surprise.
I don’t think Leafs fans like John klingberg 😬😬😬
Why would they?
Nope not at all
Leaf fans need someone to blame for the games they lose that Wes McCauley wasn't reffing
leaf fans hate Reaves more a talentless slug totally useless Klingberg actually has some skill.
or Bertuzzi...
The Leafs...let's refer to this as the Mathews Era because they finished last in the NHL and drafted Auston Mathews.
- they have never had good defense in the Mathews Era.
- they have had some strong goaltending but never strong defense to support them.
- they have overpaid all of their 'star players'.
- Keefe has never had a detectable positive influence on the team.
Solutions:
- Keefe needs to go.
- They need a strong Defensive leader.
Trade Mathews for1 decent forwards and a two top tier D-men and they'll get further in the playoffs than they have with Mathews on the team. Mathews' goals don't translate to wins. He can score all he wants but if the team is going to give up more goals than they score, they'll just repeat past performances. Leafs don't have to win games by 3 or 4 goals, they need to stop allowing so many and outscore their opponents by 1 or 2 goals instead. Ovechkin is arguably the best goal scorer of the last 20 years and he has 1 cup. How many Rocket Richard trophy winners have won a cup in the last 15 years? Get rid of him.
@@blackened4me except Mathews is excellent defensively. He's not the problem on the Leafs.
@@smorgdonkey My point is that you don't need what he gives. Leafs can get what they need by trading him for the right pieces. Goal scoring isn't a problem.
@@blackened4me wait a sec...we don't need an elite 2 way player but we need Nylander?
@@smorgdonkey You get more for Mathews in a trade.
Just subscribed. Your analysis and breakdowns are top-notch; way above the average hockey YT channel, and on par or better than a lot of TV analysts.
Incredible video, great breakdowns man
It was clear coming into the season Toronto had gotten worse defensively as a team. And unfortunately we're definitely feeling it as a fanbase. As soon as they lost schenn I knew their defense was going to be rough this season.
DEFENSE!!! Why sign reaves and Bertuzzi when they needed d and goaltending.
exactly, its on the gm's for not choosin thr right 3rd and 4th liners and not drafting a good defenseman other than reilly for years
Outstanding breakdown. Top level work. (Moneypuck has Leafs at 41.4% to make the playoffs).
There’s a 0% chance they make it. They’re done
Don't worry ! ... The Canucks are coming East starting tonight and will hand Ottawa, Toronto, and then Montreal their next losses.... I predict a sweep of all those teams....The Canucks are Very Good this year!
As a long time Canucks fan, I'm really enjoying this Alternate Universe thing this Fall. I don't want it to end, I know it probably will, but I hope it lasts til Christmas at least. #Yayyy! #wedontsuckanymore
As long as it lasts past this weekend and they give the Leaf's another notch in the loss column. LOL
Should be interesting watching on Saturday nite the Miller/Boeser/deGieseppi line go head to head with the Matthew's line
This sounds too similar to the Oilers. I remember in the 2017 playoffs, hearing all about how both the Leafs and Oilers are going to win multiple cups soon. Now a days neither team can get a save. - A hurt Canucks fan
It’s almost as if tying like 40% of your entire cap space to 4 forwards isn’t a good idea…
gotta sell those jerseys bruh
Has nothing to do with it
@@curtiselsey7307 Again, people watch the video and ignore everything he said. Indeed, even Klingberg, who looks utterly at sea, is not really blamed much individually.
Leafs are way too top heavy, and it's getting harder to see Nylander sticking around with how he's playing and what he's gonna be worth next year. They could get 2 or 3 really solid defensemen for that cap hit and they clearly need it more than more offense.
Yeah, they need to get some more defensemen on this team. Losing Nylander, while it may suck and it may make you score a little less, Toronto needs to be better defensively.
3 Justin Holls do not equal 1 William Nylander.
You aren’t getting “3 really solid” defenseman for a combined 9-10 mil in todays NHL.
@@tsak912 Maybe bring up some Marlies? I dunno
@@tsak912People don't understand that. I've said it many times as well.
If you want a true game changing defenceman it's costing 9-10
I hear this sometimes. But the worst regular player in the NHL is better than anything in the AHL. Opening night lineup is basically what you have to live with, until at the end of the season when you can pick up an aging star at the expense of draft picks. @@Freshlygrazed
Thank you for the play analysis, super appreciate that.
I don't know too much about how the Defense is supposed to work because I'm just a casual watcher so would it be possible to show people like me some examples of how the defense should be approaching these scenarios?
Two high-powered offensive teams, Oilers and Leafs, with the same problem - simply trying to outscore their opponents with no unified commitment to team defense. All too often defensive players get taken for granted and disrespected by both the ice time they are given as well as their pay, while the narcissistic glory boys (goal-scorers) simply seek to pad their stats. I suggest both the Oilers and Leafs management take a good hard look at the Vegas Golden Knights on how to balance offense with a commitment to team defense as that is what wins Stanley Cups.
"simply trying to outscore their opponents with no unified commitment to team defense. "
Exacly. Finally someone who understands modern hockey.
" I suggest both the Oilers and Leafs management take a good hard look at the Vegas Golden Knights on how to balance offense with a commitment to team defense as that is what wins Stanley Cups."
Yes, this.
I bet Vegas could have done it with Campbell, Samsonov, Skinner or even Woll on net. Because there's structure, commitment and passon for that system in place.
Idk if Vegas is the best to t look at with how they treat their players and just throw them away at the drop of a hat. Sure they won a cup but look at how many players they threw aside and treated them. I'd rather look at franchises like Colorado or Tampa who don't treat players like replaceable cogs in a machine
@@skylarsimes8poor Stamkos reading this
Seems like this happens every single year to varying degrees, and the organization has no interest in fixing it. Dubas seemed like he was finally ready to make needed changes at the end of last season, and they canned him for it.
On the video you say that Vegas is the standard for structured play currently. As someone that never played hockey only watches, they don't look all that different from the clips. Is it really only just that few feet of difference from Eichel that is the difference maker? Would love a more in depth comparison between a good and bad structure.
Semi unrelated, I've a lot of people say that Edmonton is trying to copy Vegas' defense system. Is that true? Maybe a full vegas video would be helpful, could use Edmonton to compare defense and more Leafs for offense.
Love the videos
Most of those goals are goals I would not expect to see go in against the goalies at the drop-in hockey sessions I attend. A clear look from a bad angle or a fifty foot shot should never go in. If you compare the situation, angle, and distance to the same thing against either Canuck goalie this year you would see the exact same play- except that the goalie stops the puck. Hence being outshot by Edmonton 19-2 at one point but only being down one. Straight shots just never go in. Just like my drop in games.
Goaltending.
crazy i had to scroll through so many comments but yes, it was goaltending moreso than defensive structure or whatever. coach cant talk shit about goaltending.
Excellent analysis. My new favorite hockey channel!
Found your channel like two weeks ago! Really fun to follow you! Keep it going
Greetings from Switzerland
Brilliant stuff , love the goal breakdowns
This is getting out of hand! Now there are 2 of them!
Wait, wait, wait a minute… are you telling us that team defense is important in NHL hockey?!
It’s not just scoring lots of goals and selling lots of jerseys?
Dang, I guess Edmonton and Toronto are kind of screwed, then.
As a Bolts fan, I doubt we see Toronto miss the playoffs. Will they advance past the first round again? That's up in the air. Keefe and the assistants are going to have to make some swift changes, for sure. And Tavares has to stop being out of position and slow to return, but I doubt that problem stems from Keefe's gameplan.
JT is one of those players people dont want to admit is aging faster then they realize
I think Leafs will be a .500 team this year even if Matthews scores 100 goals
@@Dronax He looks tired this season, kinda worn out. He's no spring chicken, but I imagine it's more the emotional fatigue of an overbearing Toronto media and the team's repeated lack of postseason success. It has to be one hell of a bummer, especially leaving NYI in the hopes that things would be better on your hometown team.
@@kaboom9081 I'm gonna say above .500, but not above .600. Around the .530s to .550s is my expectation. Worth noting that I anticipate the Atlantic is going to be closer in Win % compared to the past few years.
Jets and Canucks only two Canadian teams in the top half of their divisions... who called that before this season started?
Found you channel a few days ago and I am loving the videos
5:03 my coaches used to say "you can put a blanket over all of you!" Meaning we're way too close together. Pretty poor play
The best hockey channel.
Hindsight tells me that the Leafs were better off keeping Bunting and Holl over Klingberg and Bertuzzi. I was a big Bertuzzi fan before he joined the Leafs and was stoked when he signed, but he’s a fish out of water here. It’s easy to see why did well with the Bruins last spring because…well…he played with the Bruins. Yet they were also eliminated by an overachieving Florida team. The bottom line is there is no money to sign a decent supporting cast. Dubas overpaid for Tavares, Marner and Mathews, and now Mathews is gonna get a bigger chunk of the whole pie starting next year. Need to dump the coach as the start and trade one of the Core four. That has to be Marner. He and Willie play the same pansy style, so we only need to keep one, not both. Willie has a better shot and is a better skater. Things should get better once Tavares pay is off the books.
There is a reason why many top players denied to play for toronto.
The Avs have the same issue. We think we can always out skate and out score our opponents while we give up the puck, and crumble in front of our net minder.
I honestly don't mind the Leafs being so terrible because I'm an Argos fan and I can at least depend on them to give me something to cheer for. Unfortunately they only have one to two games left in the season after which I'm stuck with the Leafs and the Raptors to just absolutely give me nothing to be excited for.
Defense has been an issue for this team for years. It’s amazing to me that year after year, people still talk about Stanley Cup expectations for the Leafs… when they haven’t done jack shit to deal with their defensive shortcomings
Ron Maclean must say this. "It's like when a brave knight tries to save a princess locked in a dark castle guarded by a dragon. He tried to slay him, but he burst into flame. That's all I have to say about what happened last Wednesday night against Ottawa."
Ugly. Leafs acquisitions.
John Klingberg $4.15M (5 pts)
Max Domi $3M (6 pts)
Tyler Bertuzzi $5.5M (4 pts)
Ryan Reaves $1.35 (0 pts)
Total: $14M (15 pts) -19
GM Treliving acquire overpriced, over the hill "name" players that can't play a two way game. He was fired in Calgary for a reason.
Klingberg most of all. I did not understand that acquisition at all. He's a complete disaster defensively and his offence has dried up big time.
agree @@Mulukkis
Still, us Habs. fans thank him for the first round pick for taking Monahan !
As a Habs fan, this news does not make me sad.
As a Bruins fan, this is high quality content! :D
As a Leafs fan, I naturally don't like the Bruins, but their organization seems to be doing everything right. Leafs need to take a page or 2 from them
@@moritzguderian8381 They lost their top 2 centers and are still the top team in the division.
If we just lost Matthews we'd be looking at a top 5 draft pick right now
Update:
Leafs are now 3-5-0 at home, allowing 40 goals in those 8 games. That’s 5 goals against per game…. At HOME.
The defensive errors are just a continuation of the same problem for the past 4+ seasons
Well, they are worse defensively than last year.. it's kind of expected. Accari, Ror, Schenn ect for Klingberg, Domi, Reaves. Plus Samsonov's bubble burst.
Great breakdown on the Maple Leafs. I am a Rangers fan. 1994 my happiest year. Enjoy the content. Thank you.
I don’t watch hockey, but the videos that you create are at a good quality. Keep it up!
One thing to mention that I think is important to us that the top guys have been turning the puck over a decent amount as well (except Nylander who has only turned it over once so far*)
Canucks gonna roll in and pick up that 11th win on 11/11 with a fresh Demko after DeSmith is going to start tonight in Ottawa
Always love your breakdown of the game!! I just cringe when when I hear “the wall” it will always be “boards”. Silly I know but that’s just me. Keep up the amazing play by play. I always s look forward to your videos.
the group' gets me. it's a team!
very nice analysis !
DEFENSE AND GOALIE why is that the problem for every team that’s failing
Because outside of a few older markets, Offence sells tickets and merchandise.
It's like the Flyers for the last 30 years
The superstars are also on for as many goals against so its a wash.
I tried to explain to everyone last year with all the changes the makemelaughs made, they will have no defense or goaltending or pk. It is really simple, if you pay 4 forwards over half your cap, less then half a cap is available for the other 22 players (for depth) which means junior level contracts for the rest of the team. It should be very very simple to figure this out.
Leafs need themselves some Rick Tocchet.
Can't wait until the Nucks tune their clock on HNIC Saturday night.
Great analysis.
I'm glad Freddie got out of that situation in Toronto and taking all the blame for the Leafs garbage defense that they've had for years. Sure he gets injured a lot but he has great numbers with a real defense
I have a nightmare scenario for Leafs fans: forcing heavier minutes onto the core scorers will inevitably lead to one of them getting injured. With what we're seeing so far this season, how would this team look without Matthews, Marner, Nylander?
And consistently putting Woll under duress may cause a development backslide. If so, it'll be with Samsonov as the only other goaltender option.
Leafs are flirting with disaster every game. And, looking at their history, it'll be something like a un-thought-of game against the Yotes where things finally fall apart.
Kyle Dubris created this mess and he’s doing the same at Pittsburgh. He doesn’t pick defense players, just goal scorers. If your goal scorers dont get scores in a game, then they will loose. He created a team that’s heavily dependent on score goaling their way out of a defense problem.
I wouldn't say they've always been trying to outscore their problems. last year they were tied for 5th in goals against. This despite the fact the defense then wasn't that good on paper either (obviously not as bad as now). We had a system then, and it seemed to work. Now, I see 3 people go for the same guy and leave someone else completely open. It's crazy how bad the difference is
I don't always agree with your takes but you're in-depth analysis of the game within the game is elite bro! I love your content, keep it coming!
I love seeing this.
newly subscribed. love your breakdowns. could we get your take on the Preds soon? also, in the offseason I would love to see your history vids covering old time hockey--from early NHL all the way through the 60s and 70s. I get that there is limited video footage but I bet the research you would shed light on would be phenomenal.
Excellent analysis!
Some good news for Leafs fans: At least you are not cheering for the Oilers!
the problem is, I’m a leafs fan whose second favourite team is the Oilers…..
The moment they signed John Tavares is the moment they sunk themselves LMAO and it's just glorious to watch. They need to strip the captaincy from Tavares cause he's not a leader.
Maybe Marner should figure out what position he wants to play cause it looks like he is confused or scared to play his right wing position . He should get into the corners and get the puck not shy away from it .
I feel like the pressure from the media and fanbase doesnt help one bit. I get it we are frustrated because we want to win a cup but fuck booing the team for almost an entire period probably doesnt help motivate the players on the ice one bit
Again would love a look at the best teams this year and how they are dealing with defense
I'd hate to see Marner get traded but he deserves a chance to play on a solid team. Personally I think he's a fantastic player, true play maker, great skater and hockey smarts too.
They need one player to score 2-3 goals a game every game to have a chance of winning.
they let in 4+ goals every game so they need to score 5 or 6
These videos are awesome
Great breakdown!
Leafs are a team with a few very good forwards, that's it. You can't win in this league with a "team" built that way, period.
Wow..great work..sign me up..
We had excellent 2-way players in Kadri and Hyman, just saying. That doesn't speak to D core, but we got rid of both for literally nothing.
You gotta love this
Odd man rushing into are zone is the main issue. And the bullying of the other team seems to go without repercussions. Reeves trying to fight as the buzzards go for the end of the game is absolutely embarrassing. Reeves make an impact early and then keep the bench warm. Let's go leafs live you boys
leafs top two defensive lines 2022-23 Morgan Reilly, TJ Brodie,Mark Giordano, Justin Holl. Only one of these players are no longer on the team. This same player we were told was responsible for all the leafs issues.
this team is a long long way from missing the playoffs. that's crazy talk.
It's funny watching teams like the Oilers and Leafs just draft players based on offensive skill when there is so much more to it than that. Teams like the Bruins and Golden Knights don't have nearly the star power but are built with players with good character, work ethic, put the team ahead of themselves.
I'm no expert in hockey, but it seems to me the forwards aren't doing enough on the defensive side?
This was a great video man keep it up
As a devils fan... same
"Typical" being the understatement of the century......
The Leafs are like Mike McCarthy's Packers: a couple of highly skilled players trying to bail out an otherwise mediocre team. It's a winning strategy for the regular season, but it just doesn't work when the season is on the line and you're facing well-structured and disciplined teams.
All of these comparisons, I see in the oilers the team that I cheer for. It’s sad really. There’s many factors that have lead to this with these two teams. Then getting these massive offensive talents in Mathews and marner (mcdavid and draisaital) where a lot of money needs to allocated. The culture of these teams becomes offensive in nature the gms keep trying to “buy” into their massive offensive talents but leave goaltending and defencemen in the dust.
Looks good on them.
Funny how many people are saying the Leafs are the Oilers of the East division and it's 100% accurate. As the video points out, they have bad defense and bad goaltending that's occasionally bailed out by their massive amount of offensive talent.
EVERY new hockey "fan" should start here to get some tools in your toolbox. Great break downs and analysis by HP so you can throw down some real hockey talk with the buds......And explain that F1, F2, and F3 have nothing to do with sports cars ;-)
