    I would suggest building a sound proof technical room under the stairs (with a door) great place to put a build in pressure washer, compressor, vaccuum, dust extraction, and other utilities for the garage. Just run ductwork to where you need it. Saves a bunch of clutter and noise when enjoying your new workshop!

      I'd put the air compressor and dust extractor in an attached shed on the backside exterior of the garage, near the neighbor's property line, so it's away from your main house. It'll make your neighbors real happy, too.

    I have an idea not mentioned in the video. I think you should put a door on the back of the garage to access the space under the stairs and store future outdoor stuff in there, lawn equipment, lawn chairs, chair cushions, etc. as well as compressors, permanent pressure washers, Ac equipment. That way you don’t dirty up the garage every time you deal with the lawn. Or need outdoor bins or walk through the garage to store cushions to keep them dry in rainstorms, and retrieve later. Or hear the machines as much that support your new shop

    • @Not_Ferrari
      @Not_Ferrari ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This isn't a terrible idea, but I'm not sure it would work. I have something similar in my house, but it's more like a 10x10 room, whereas what they have is more like 4x8 with rapidly diminishing height. That could make it really tight to get in and out of with lawn equipment and things like patio chairs and cushions, especially when you consider the amount of room that would need to stay clear for the door to swing into the space.

    • @jonblair5470
      @jonblair5470 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Not_Ferrari looks more like 3’8” by 15’ but never the less things like that need to be stored somewhere. I built something on the back of my garage to store similar stuff and have a bin on my deck for cushions only. Prior to me having either it was a pain to get everything in and out of the garage and to be honest the storage shed and bin look tacky imo. If I could build onto my house and make it look like it was always there without dealing with months and mountains or bureaucracy, I would. Jordan has the chance to do so. So that’s just my recommendation.

BTW, I LOVE the idea of the big picture of Paul at the bottom of those stairs! LOL I could hear those same words come out of my dad's mouth.
    My vote though: A door and "hidden" storage under the stairwell. I think it'll help improve the visuals later, as well as streamline the organization. Just don't forget to put a light in there, as well as an outlet! :)

    Under stair:
    Base your solution on the function.
    If you'll stuff the space full of seasonal decorations, just use a door.
    If you'll roll a couple of motorcycles to the side and under the stair, make a wide opening.
    I've done lots of both, and more.
    Usually, I stop the closet where the head height drops low enough to be a nuisance. Though one time, my client was an avid surfer, and he insisted on the closet space running all the way to the bitter end under the stringers: Old surf boards could be run to the shallow end!

  • @petecomps7260
    @petecomps7260 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You're going to be hauling furniture and appliances up those stairs. You should consider a double door in that opening, because you'll be making a right turn to get up the stairs. As for the area under the stairs, I agree with Jordan that an open space is preferable to a wall with another door. However, you might consider a roll-up door, too. You can get them in custom widths, so the opening could be as wide as you want. That way, Jordan can close the area off for security (or just to hide clutter), but have a wide opening when he wants it.

    Either option works for under stairs! I personally would leave open and add some storage under there. Also, while you are framing, once you do the ceiling for the garage, if you plan to add any ceiling garage rack storage, add some blocking. It was a pain installing with the spacing I had! Great video. Looking forward to the next one.

    Make it a closet, door underneath the stairs. After a couple months if you find that you really don't like it you can always cut it out later but building it back is a pain and you already have the wood installed there now.
    You could reinforce stuff and make it more of a secure room so you can store more expensive things in there.

    Personally considering the size/location I would suggest some sort of kitchenette, having a large 'Dirty" sink and something like a overflow/beer fridge are some touches that are really nice when your working in there for hours. I'm not sure where your plans currently call for a washer and dryer but that would also fit in that space really well. I think I would personally turn it into a Kitchenette with an extra deep concrete counter/cabinets, a built in washer/drier/ a large sink, and a fridge with the section under the stairs too low to be useful turned into a storage nook and cabinets above (though set higher than you would normally put them so you can fit extra large objects in the sink) and any space above the cabinets left filled with built in shelves for extra long-term storage (Christmas stuff or things like that for example).
    Alternatively I love chest freezers because I buy meat on sale and store it until I need it to save money and having a large one in that area instead of a fridge would also be a good option, If I had the budget I would do everything I said above but instead of a full fridge I would put one built into the counter (like a wine fridge) and put a big chest freezer.

    Looks like a great spot to put tool boxes and various tool storage. I would definitely leave it open because closing it off will end up just limiting what you can store there and you'll wish you had the space later. Could be a good opportunity to do a really unique storage option too, not a lot of people with under the stair tool storage in the garage.

  • @michaeldesa3444

    I've been watching you all for months and am so excited to see the framing begin! My father-in-law has been helping me build my forever home for my family since 2019, so I can relate to the two of you on so many levels. You all show details about actual construction no one else does; never stop!
    I like the detail you showed about the anchor bolts, but getting the depth of those can be tricky; maybe consider describing that in detail in a future video. Screwing the nut on before you hammer it in is so important, otherwise you'll damage the threads and never get the nut on. You don't want to over tighten otherwise you'll break the seal of the pressure treated wood and make it more permeable to moisture in that spot. I've used a piece of painters tape to make a flap at at appropriate depth on my hammer drill to tell me how far to go. The tape flap also helps clear away the concrete dust as you drill.
    For the space under the stairs, I'd consider making it the size of a large bookshelf or garage cabinet. Put the bookshelf on hinges and have it swing in and right into the garage so it's not smacking into your car. If you don't want to go through that trouble, I like the door idea, but maybe make it a 3080 door or even larger. You're going to want that space under there.

    If you have a door under the stairs you can have storage shelves inside the hidden area. Maybe make a hidden doorway to that area that opens outward and looks like shelves or something. but if Jordan wans it wall-less it could be a larger open area for storage. Leave the area under the stairs open. Open space in a garage rarely goes to waste, plus you can see what’s there. Stuff thrown under enclosed stairs tends to get buried. Also that area under the stairs would be a great spot for a big air compressor!👍

    Congratulations! Y'all are killing it. I absolutely love that you show every step of the way, no detail left out. It's a humble approach that sets you apart. You're not showing a highlight reel just to flex, you're teaching what you've learned (which is a ton!) and keeping it human. How else could we really appreciate what it really takes to make the house come together? One small request: last video I think you mentioned throwing the tarp over the framing to keep the storms from damaging it. I'd like to see that for a few seconds just to see what that looks like.

    If Jordan’s planning on having an air compressor in the garage, keep under the stairs enclosed, add the door and sound deadening insulation. That’s a great way of keeping the compressor quiet in the garage.

    This is so exciting!! I hope we get a shot of Jordan's stang in there when it's done ❤
    If you leave it partially open like Jordan wants might consider built in drawers for storage under the stairs rather than a wall of wasted space ☺

    Fantastic video as always, really enjoying this build series! Either option will be great but honestly comes down to the end user and how they wish to use the space. I like the idea of having it open with built in storage/organization.

    Let me say I like this channel more with each episode. I have been a plan designer and licensed building contractor for about 40 years. Watching this channel shows that even though Dad has excellent trade skills you encounter problems through the building process, sometimes costly i.e. the foundation issues. The big take is that they always suck it up and continue on with the project.
    I would take a different approach to lift that wall. I do own a genie lift, skid-steer, and mini ex. What we would do is frame the wall with trimmers/jacks and then stand it without the beam. Then install the beam separately. I could do it myself with a couple of come-alongs. Just my thoughts whatever work for you is all good.

    • @kirbypmorris
      @kirbypmorris ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree. Stand it without the beam and then lift it into place. Done it before. Easy peasy.

    I think Jordan's idea of opening up the space under the stairs is right on. It could be a nice spot for a workbench or tool storage or lawn equipment storage or whatever.

    just rented the same machine in $70 Canadian bucks... a ten-footer with 1000 lb limit, and lifted a few chunky upper shelf units to install over already installed counters in small offices... biggest shelf was almost 600 lbs, I figure, and elevenish feet long. Would have been awkward and risky af without it. Well worth it.

    I would be sure to ask the architect about the door. I would think he’d want to keep exhaust gases from migrating upstairs. Fire migration would also be a concern while Jordan is using it as a living space. Love your channel.

    Issue with removal of wall is allowing access of exhaust and other fumes from the garage area into the upper apartment. Two doors were probably required to keep exhaust gasses to a minimum and removing the wall would increase the gasses access to the upper unit.

    I have totally enjoyed watching yall's videos a lot lately. Super awesome and what a great adventure. I even get sad when I know an episode is coming to an end! Well done and keep up the amazing work. Open up the wall under the stairs and do some built in storage cabinets or even a recessed work bench. It allows you to have ample space for more activities in the garage!
