      Thank you! At first I didn’t know what to think since I like teaching people how to make things themselves, but then I remembered all the times I’ve needed some kind of voiceover work in previous jobs where I couldn’t be the one doing it. There are a ton of situations where being able to try out a variety of voices without needing all the audio production gear would be super helpful.
      It was also fun trying to get the tone and inflections right 😅

    Built-in battery-instant no buy. This is huge mic and @Rodemic could have made a removable battery. This is one of the main things that made me stop buying any Rode products: the company doesn't care about environment and blatantly disrespects its users by pushing unnecessary built-in batteries where there definitely should have been removable ones.

    I have two of the Interview Pros. I am dreading the possible mic-bleed between the two. I have not tested it yet, but we will see. Honestly, with its omnidirectional aspect, it does a good job in blocking out unwanted ambient sound. Rode should make a Mic XLR plug that would work with Wireless Pros. The interview GO (stick) is cheesy.

I actually had purchased this before seeing your video, and knowing this is only 12 days old, I am VERY appreciative of a nice 'under the hood' look at this bad boy. This mic is so good! I definitely have a need for a few! Really wish they had replaceable batteries too. Btw, That ad read was so cool!! 😂I’m sold. One main reason is how fluid the AI voices sound and how diverse they are also, my clients have been demanding AI voices plus stock footage plus license royalty free music. Now I can have all of that for one price instead of a bunch of random subscriptions. Great video Tom, thanks. 🙏🏿 that 3month of hell of that wireless go was incredible!!!

    I agree with everything you said. I've had one for a month or so and am a fan. I did manage to brick the first one by clicking the factory reset option in Rode Central. Wouldn't even mount on the desktop after that. Ta;ked with Rode, and they were great as always and got a new one right away. An additional thought - I do a lot of documentary work, and am a huge proponent of backups for everything. Which can get pricey sometimes. I always had a Rode Reporter and a Sony ECM77B wired lav mic as backups whenever using a wireless system. For the recorder, I had little Tascam that I forget the model of, but had the same form factor as the XLR plug-in transmitters you showed. Sometimes we'd use that for roving interviews with the Rode Reporter, but it had a horrible interface and not great quality. Keeping the Interview Pro in a bag all the time, or at least in the car, works great as a backup for the recorder and other mics. Plus it's great to have around for a spur of the moment scenario. Grab and shoot with no worries or setup. Those are times I like the omni pickup over a more directional one. This mic may not always be the best specific option, but it is almost always a serviceable option to get you out of a jam.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you got the issue sorted out- that's kinda scary!
      Speaking of backups, my Sennheiser XLR wireless transmitter does have a Micro SD card for on board recording, and can transmit/record at the same time. 👍

      I have a recent video on how to make the PodMic sound its best, which walks through the basics of processing. None of the audio here is processed though- I always use the “raw” audio for reviews so people can get the most accurate idea of how a mic sounds.

    Hey Punmaster, So I emailed Rode and asked about the longevity of the internal battery and this is what they sent me: "The Interview Pro has a 2-year warranty that includes battery coverage if it fails during this time. Most small lithium batteries of this type have a 2-3 year lifetime before they start to have a noticeable deterioration in performance. We do pride ourselves on servicing our products, so if there is ever any issues, we'd recommend getting in touch with us to see what we can do at the time." So I took that to mean this microphone is good for 2 TO 3 years and then you throw it away and have to buy a new one. That doesn't seem right. What do you think? Thanks. Bandit Benjamin. (it's a nickname, my parents didn't name me bandit!)

    Re: 2.4GHz. Shure went to 2-band, 2.4GHz and 5.8Ghz, on their GLX-D+, last year. I like this. I have the original 2.4GHz GLXD for my guitar. I’m not 100% sure my couple of drops were from the wireless itself, or a cord issue.
    I use the Shure SLX-D 558-602 and 614-616 MHz for my vocals. I travel a lot and the 614-616 uses the “Guard Band” between UHF-TV and the LTE band, so I have at least 4 open channels anywhere I travel in the US. Next time I travel abroad, this could be an issue, and I might need to get 2.4GHz/5.8GHz as a backup for travel outside the US, since those are non communications bands in all treaty countries. Idk. It’s a mess and a bit tricky, but so far so good. 😊

    The disadvantage of employing omni-directional microphones is that they tend to catch up every sound in your space. It is no coincidence that live stage microphones feature a cardioid/supercardioid polar pattern. Years of experience have shown that only cardioid mics are most suited for interviews outside of ideal studio circumstances. Do not purchase this microphone if you intend to use it outdoors or at events etc.

      It can definitely be used for music, although the omnidirectional pickup pattern may or may not give results you're looking for. Lots of mics used for music typically have cardioid pickup patters (but of course it's an art so there's room to experiment!)

    Damn. Waited so long for this review since I saw it at NAB.
    But now I am more confused than ever... 😅😭
    Quick explanation of my current setup and idea.
    I have a meetup and wanted to deliver some high quality sound during the live and have a good quality recording of it.
    I already have a Rodecaster Pro I and thought of buying the following:
    - Interview Pro, so that I could give the mic to the audience while asking questions, would not pick up too much voice because people are already listening in silence. Omni is also more of a benefit than an issue. Even tho, I could indeed skip that one and clip a second Wireless Pro receiver on a stick.
    - Wireless Pro, so that I could receive from the mic below
    - some DPA headset mic like 4488, so that the speaker could speak hands free and have a very good time giving their talk. Since it's adult during a keynote, the mic will not get damaged or anything either.
    - drop a big speaker at the back of the room so that everyone can hear with no need to rise the voice, already tried that setup and it works decently well
    - Rodecaster Pro I would mostly fetch the wireless signal of both Interview Pro + Wireless pro into the receiver plugged into the receiver wired to it. Then long XLR cable to the end of the room for the speaker. So, the interface would mostly be closer to the speaker so that I do not have too much 2.4GHz issues.
    Thought of buying mostly Rode to stay in the ecosystem and having something functional. Even tho, the HS2 doesn't look like it's the best way to go...
    I even have some Reporterstore foam in the colors of my meetup already haha. 👌🏻
    The battery is not really a big deal to me, don't think that I will drain it that much overall and I don't mind sending it back for a new one. ✅
    The price would also be fine, I don't mind putting some money into something qualitative that I could play with and learn from. Also, I will re-use most of the stuff for personal projects anyway, so it will be a good investment long-term too.
    But yeah, I heard the advice of going UHF (basically analog radio right?) mics like the Sennheiser one. Even tho, those look quite bulky and also have their own issues regarding the tech used.
    I am also not planning on having more than 50 people in a small room, without the room being longer than 20 meters max. Hence distance is not a big deal.
    Overall, a Live setup explanation video would be very welcome sir. 🚀💖
    Dope review otherwise, thanks again Tom! 🙏🏻
    Love the Artlist section too. 😂

    Celcius! Add that to your goaltending and you're ready to move north ;) Love the review and love the look of the mic - was ready to place an order but thought the omni-directional mic while solving some problems...probably not so good in a busy PROfessional locker room. So....what else to use?

    I just picked this mic up. My main issue with it is that it can’t connect directly to an iPhone. That would have made it perfect. Also I just watched an interview on no jumper. And sharp the interviewer had that other mic you showed. And man after hearing my video on the interview pro and yours I noticed it sounded bad to have an interview mic that is so directional. And sharps mic cut out the event crowd / ambience noise. Sounded horrible imo. So yes the rode is better cause it’s too jarring listening to an interview and the mic only picks up one main direction. Sorry so long winded !!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The super directional mics require a lot of skill to use well. Once you have the muscle memory then it's not too bad and they do a stellar job of rejecting unwanted noise. But I'm so impressed with the Rode mic and how easy it is to get consistently good sound. Definitely something just about anyone could pick up and use.

    Hi Tom! sorry, I have a question. I'm just starting to create content, I bought a shure mv7 and I'm looking for an arm for it. I have seen your 2 videos reviewing the Elgato low profile mic arm (it doesn't convince me because in reviews I have read that it is a little weak) and the rode psa1+ (it doesn't convince me because of its logo). What do you recommend me to do? Thank you very much for taking the time to read me.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would recommend buying one or both arms from a reputable dealer with a good return policy and seeing how you like them yourself! Then you can return one or both if they don't work out. Alternatively, if you like the Rode arm, the original PSA1 doesn't have all the loud branding on it.

      @@tombuck Yessir. The nice part about rode and other manufacturers over the last 15 years I'd say ...they've gotten REALLY good at signal deflection and what we in the HAM Radio industry and some CB'ers call Slip. half-frequencies, and such variations that help with direct signal, while the signal deflection software in the hardware chips included both for example with THAT mic and the Rodecasters, both PRO and otherwise that help with signal bleed/ RFI etc. are amazing. Just be aware that this is a GREAT studio mic, or even portable if need-be, but in a LIVE environment, it might be a bit tricky, which is why professional IEM and Wireless systems are such higher frequencies and LICENSED ranges etc. You already knew this, but for those whom might not have, etc. Blessings! Thanks as always for such GREAT and thoroughly researched/well put together videos!

      This mic is bad for street interviews. Never buy omnidirectional microphone for street/news interviews. Live stage microphones have cardioid/supercardioid polar pattern; this is not accident. Years of experience confirm that for interviews outside of ideal studio settings only cardioid mics are most appropriate.

    TH-cam quality (you called it ProCumsumer) with the typical oversized RODE on the windscreen. I do so few interviews I stick with the handle and a generic windscreen over my DJI Wireless 2 or Rode Me. I will not buy RODE products that have oversized RODE marketing on them. I think there's room for both! I had to really think about whether or not I wanted to share the AI tools since I spend so much time teaching people how to do these things themselves, but there are so many situations where for whatever reason it's just not practical or possible for someone to be behind a mic recording, and it's REALLY nice to have a decent option!

      @playeronthebeat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tombuck yes.
      It's a shame. As you said: Replacable batteries make life so much easier. Even if they're proprietary ones.
      Sadly, while some of us have luck with "good" batteries, they're not created equally, and they're not used equally, resulting in a different degradation speed of that battery. They could die right after warrenty or last a decade. It's entirely up to luck.
      For the longevity of products alone, replaceable batteries should be considered. I'm 100% more for a company going the 'extra' mile (or keeping it that way), even though I might never need it myself - the option alone gives me a better sense of security.
