  • Last month we had the priviledge of speaking with a couple of the skippers of the incredible Baltic Trader ship, the Williams II. This is more commonly known as the Blyth Tall Ship, which operates out of Blyth Northumberland. Blyth Tall Ship are a charitable organisation.
They are a fantastic organisation, who support people from all sorts of backgrounds to learn wood working skills, historic boat building, marine engineering, and STEM subjects, while also offering chances to crew the very impressive Williams II, a ship that's dedicated to the history of, and similar to, the original 'Williams', a ship that took William Smith onto discovering the first land in Antarctica.
For our interview, we spoke to Susan Gebbels, one of the skippers of the Williams II, on their round Britain journey, about life on board, their focus as a charity and the history of the vessel.
Our time was short with them, but we were able to get on board to see inside and outside this remarkable ship. Interviews were done at a slight distance due to the wind and the ability of one of us to be on the pontoon in such weather (we all actually hid behind a sign, as the wind battered us from the NE).
We would like to say big thanks to the Blyth Tall Ship team for allowing us into their space, and to Susan for doing the interview with us. Thanks to Mark for arranging it.

It doesn't look as windy as it was that day - Thankful that I could go onboard and have a look around. My second Tall Ship now! 😂✨

Yeah I agree, it was really blustery. It was moving my wheelchair at one point.

Five skippers? Where have they learned to handle large traditional sailing vessels to be able to skipper one?

Yeah five (we guess they rotate). We didn't get to speak to them quite as much as we'd have liked unfortunately, but we assume they train on this ship. Initially they may have trained on other similar vessels?
