    When agrarian cults were mentioned, I was reminded of the short story, "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson. The townspeople would hold a lottery once a year to determine who would be stoned to death in order to ensure a good corn harvest.

      @5tran9eMCMLXXII 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulziolo9241 I saw both but wasn't aware of the source material. The re-make was generally terrible but I think the choice to make the cult leader female (no offense to Lee) felt intuitively right for the story, as it seemed at least partially intended to evoke fear of a return to primitive matriarchal tribal societies. Though like I said I haven't read the book it's based on

    The depiction of Kali in "Indiana Jones" is actually highly inaccurate. According to the legend, she was born from the brow of Devi as a warrior goddess to fight Raktabija, the Demon King and his forces. Although her bloodlust nearly got out of control afterwards, she continued to act as a guardian against evil forces in Hindu mythology. Furthermore, Shiva was not her enemy, but her consort, and is reputed to be the only one who could calm her down.

      +Tom, Yeah, I saw Martyrs. What a sadistic sick flick, took me weeks to get over the haunting depression it caused me. I fast-forwarded thru it on this vid so as not to be reminded. Now I'm off to watch some comedies.

    • @LiliCanal
      @LiliCanal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      +Terry Gascay : I did the same! I NEVER want to see a single image of "Martyrs" ever again. I love thriller / horror movies and I can handle "torture porn" (I don't like it, but I can watch it)...
      But "Martyrs" was too much for me. It's literally the ONLY movie I really regret watching. I couldn't even watch the ending (I fast-forwarded the movie just too see what happened without actually watching the whole "let's-flay-that-woman-alive" thing. Even so, it made me want to throw up... It was NOT a good idea to watch "Martyrs" while eating lunch.)

      @patatedoucebb2919 8 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      what's so weird is that the movie kind of spits on the face of the torture porn genre. most movies of that style understand that the audience want to enjoy how fucked up it is, like being mesmerized by a Plane Crash. think of the human centipede. that movie is fully aware that you're watching cause it's gross and you secretly enjoy Your Own disgust. but this movie... it's not torture porn, it's just torture. its the worst thing you've ever seen and you're not grossed out and exhilarated after you watch, you want to forget it as soon as you've seen it. don't watch this movie. and it's not even like a lure to get you to see it. don't fucking watch this movie. the writer wrote it when he was suicidal. it feels like being plunged into his mindset. you'll be hopeless for days. don't do it man.

    • @ThePirateprincess23
      @ThePirateprincess23 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually it was original version of Red Dawn that was the first film to get the PG-13 rating, 3 months after Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was released. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was rated PG. It was due to the graphic nature of both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Gremlins (also PG) that the PG-13 rating was created in July 1984, 2 months after the release of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (And, yes I looked this all up.)

    Here's some fun fact...the "fictional" Summer Isle in The Wicker man is actually the island of Somersby off the coast of Cornwall, where they make Somersby cider, and the rituals in the original version are based on the religious practices of the Celts as recorded by Julius Caesar and other writers of Classical antiquity, and are somewhat more accurately represented than the Thuggee rituals in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The only good thing about the remake is that it has Nicholas Cage.

The Peter Fonda movie had a lot of action and creepiness, like witchcraft from the satanists who were chasing them. Also, the cult members of "The Devil's Rain", another 70's horror movie, was pretty creepy in it's own right. They did not have eyes, and melted when it rained. Ernest Borgnine was sooo evil as the devil! Very eerie movie that caused me nightmares as a kid!

    The Invitation !!!! Mindblowing movie! Just watched it recently and I enjoyed it in a wah I haven't in a very long time. I haven't heard of it before so I guess it can be considered a hidden gem.

    Missed the masked cult in Kubrick's "Eye's Wide Shut"(1999) or the Santeria cult in the film titled The Believers (1987) I particularly like, the Book People from Fahrenheit 451 (1966)

    Awesome pick for number one...Thugee Cult is actually historically true and Gunga Din is fictionalized story about the British defeating the cult. You can look at Temple of Doom too as a sequel to Gunga Din :)

    I think the ones left out that should be on the list or at least got an honorable mention is the people on Kong Island in the 2005 King Kong movie, they were real creepy and the movie The Skulls with Paul Walker basically an insight into what really happens with the wealthy Families in our society.

    Seeing the cult from Silent Hill makes me sick bc I remember when Christabella was killed. I almost vomited and I couldn't finish watching it...god it was brutal.

    Very well chosen films! Martha Marcy May Marlene is specially bleak in my opinion, cause it's not the typical machiavellic point of view.

      GeomorgusNihili In the movie it seemed, they were doing it for fun, not to honor someone, or something, so I wouldn't call it a cult.

    You should have mentioned the 7th Victim. It is one of the earliest films dealing in cults and the psychological effects that had on people.
