Simply adore Quentin - RIP you brave, brave soul. Everyone could benefit from some, or all of his wisdom. What I would give to share a meal with him in New York!!!
i find it very calming to listen to him speak. "I don't behave the way I do in order to annoy society, or in order to placate it; I behave the way I do because this is the way I am."
There is no such thing as someone not being praised (by some) and being blamed (by others) - so this a moot point, although a sagacious intellectual theatre. We do not live a non-referential universe.
He was one of the most beautiful men, I have ever seen..He had his own thoughts...did not need to copy anyone else's ...He had charisma. I would have chosen him as a friend....and that is rare for me
I can remember the impact of the Naked Civil Servant when it was first broadcast. It took the UK by storm because it so unexpected. This great character had been living amoungst us and we never noticed him. What it also did was show how much British attitudes to homosexuality had changed. People did not mock him, they were horrified he had suffered so much and admired his strength agaist adversity. He needed to happen. And the USA responed even with more gusto towards Mr. Crisp.
My role model since the The Naked Civil Servant first aired. Many of his early quotes are so relatable today. I could listen to him for hours. I keep Resident Alien and The Naked Civil Servant on my nightstand and never tire of reading them. A quote or pearl of wisdom can be found for almost anything I am going through. In many ways Quentin Crisp saved my life and my sanity.
I feel EXACTLY the same. I used to walk around with Naked civil servant in my pocket and consulted it like the i-ching. Still do consult Mr. Crisp, daily.
He was quite a man. When I was a young, confused, due to my religion, gay man, I looked for as many people who were in any way like me. I loved his statement, "I would have been acting everyday", surely a Brave man. Love him.
Quentin May Be A Resident Alien But To Me Personally Quentin Has Always Been Highly Honoured And Respected Throughout My Life Quentin Absolutely Unique ☕💝💖🌠🌟
Quintin Crisp is so adroit and perceptive I'm surprised he didn't write a book of real social analysis. That perception of social change being intimately connected with economic change and the filtering of money to a younger market affecting morality is pretty profound. He could have been the Marshall Mcluhan of social mores, sexual and economic. But ultimately I suppose he was just himself...a fine example of 'do what thou wilt...except do no harm' and what higher praise could anyone want?
In my middleage before viewing this video I had come to the same conclusions as this gentleman so I have been very moved by his words, knowing I'am not alone in my conclusions
morality is in the hands of the under 25s. This is so true, Probably why we are in such a mess today with no one taking responsibility for anything. In China old people are seen as wise in the west they are seem as nuisances. This is why western capitalism collapsed. Live today and when things go wrong take no responsibility.

His self loathing homosexual life is horrible. He's an original and quite brilliant. But, hating your own sexualty and y[r place in it is hard to understand in today's climate.
Other than your 2nd sentence, your comment is garbled & flat out wrong. QC is a wonderful example of loving & accepting yourself in a backwards hate-filled society that's constantly telling you to change to their ways. QC wasn't a homophobe, the cultures they lived in were! ( I refer to QC in a non-binary way. With our evolved understanding of gender, it's obvious QC was not a binary gendered person.)
WONDERFUL to see so much of Mr. Crisp on TH-cam.
One of the greatest people who ever lived
Definately one of the best domestic philosophers for sure. He is a real light of hope in the agony of this life.
An extraordinary human being!

"If there were no praise, and no blame, who would I be then?"
Fantastic life motto. We mustn't lose ourselves trying to please the crowd.

@@TAROTAI hence, the 'if'...
I wish the complete version of this interview would re-surface. He appeared on this show twice. Best two interviews of Quentin Crisp ever!
He was one of the most beautiful men, I have ever seen..He had his own thoughts...did not need to copy anyone else's ...He had charisma. I would have chosen him as a friend....and that is rare for me
Makes me smile everytime I read his books or see him interviewed.
He has some great observations. Very thoughtful.
A brave and noble man.
What a wonderful and dignified man. "If there were no praise and no blame, who would I be then?"
This statement only holds true if you allow others to define your identity.
Gosh, even old he still was so HANDSOME!!!!!!!!
I think so too. A beautiful man.
I'd go one further... not handsome but attractive
"If there was no praise and no blame - who would I be then? Brilliant!!!!! If we all could follow this simple phrase.
"If there were no praise or no blame, who would I be then?" An inspiration.
Yes, regardless of sexual orientation

What a beautiful soul!
Gay, straight... whatever, this man was a gift for us all. What an extraordinary, wise soul!

I'm not a dropout, I was never in!
i adore this man
I can't stop thinking about John Hurt's performance...
Quentin May Be A Resident Alien
But To Me Personally
Quentin Has Always Been Highly Honoured And Respected
Throughout My Life

Manners from Heaven is perhaps the closet to that, that he wrote. Or Doing it with Style perhaps.
Brilliant!
love him
I had lunch with him in the 80s
Wow, what a great memory to have!
Love this guy ❗😊🌹
The idea of 'getting on' has disappeared, but the idea of 'getting off' is now universal.
May anyone of you refer some of his books to me? Which ones are the best?
Such a wise man!
A man ahead of his time, he was badly treated by society then.
In my middleage before viewing this video I had come to the same conclusions as this gentleman so I have been very moved by his words, knowing I'am not alone in my conclusions
Just saw the film "The Naked Civil Servant" for the first time. Really enjoyed it.
Quentin Crisp R.I.P.
God made us all.
We're a product of Nature.
"People who will throw their money about have the world for a footman."
Lovely
Read: "Manners from Heaven."
Who was the interviewer, and what was the date?
@jonnycomehome God, what a great quote. I"m 26, I'm still trying to get to that point. I hope I do.
Amen.
