What a wonderful interview, Rian, and what well thought out questions, especially so for such a young man at the time. You seemed to become more relaxed by mid interview and the dialogue flowed better and better as it went along. What a treat it must have been to have Mr. Quisp there for your program. He continues to intrigue me even years after his passing. You and I appear to be about the same age and I see much of myself in you in your interview. Thank you for sharing this with us, Rian. Well done!!
A fine interview by a well prepped interviewer whose intelligent probing questions stimulated Crisp to speak comfortably and concisely. Posterity's grateful.
A great man and a wonderful character. People like Crisp get it. There are no rules to life in the sense that there's some pattern people have to follow. Too many people spend their time doing what they think they're supposed to do not what they want to do. It's why so many people have the infamous "mid-life crisis".
Great interview Rian! Your questions were thought-provoking and you allowed Quentin to speak freely. Interviewing a legend at such a young age could not have been easy. You nailed it! Thanks for sharing this.
This was a delight. The interviewer was wonderful and Quentin was dazzling. I adore him so much and I am glad he moved to New York and was welcomed.🥀🥀♥️
He was the greatest Esentric. So admired for hid work, and wisdom. The late great John Hurt done him proud in the Film The Nacked Civil Servant. I was hoping to watch it again on here. But it has been deleted. R.I.P. and thanks for your honesty. Mr Crisp.
mr. keating, you said that very accurately = Quentin Crisp broadens everyones horizons , and entertains us at the same time !....... Entertaining Philosophy ! Entertaining Wisdom !
Quentin Crisp would say that John Hurt always played him what ever he played, so even if it was the Elephant Man, or if an alien is busting out of his chest in Alien or Winston in Orwell's 1984.
ah tis a pity the conversation stopped so suddenly, quentin was on a roll and hadnt finished what he was saying. i guess the time was up. loved listening to him. thank you rian for sharing.
Absolutely fascinating what QC said about his career or lack of one, and being a model, and the “students” and their reason for going to art classes. Such food for thought from such a profound thinker, he was incredible. Blows my mind with his colossal intellect.
Did you know that Quentin Crisp was born Dennis Charles Pratt in the London suburb of Sutton England on Christmas day 1908,and died of natural causes on 21st November 1999.
He was a good man. 👍 quite exceptional in so many ways.... kind, eloquent, gentle and extremely intelligent. He is still greatly missed by so many. I was brought up to hate homosexuals and be unkind, I now know that is profoundly wrong and Im greatly ashamed I ever judged people on their sexuality alone. What's important is ones deeds in life and what's in your heart. Quintin Crisp was a truly courageous human being.
I think Quentin's observations about TV are so on point. My habits are more like his, in that if I watch TV it's because I'm deliberately looking for something. But I don't like sitting in front of the TV just for the sake of it, or having it on in the background just to "have it on". I don't understand that mentality.
Quentin Crisp Knowledge is absolutely perfect in every way possible on the aspect of life in general in human nature, which is absolutely essential for it is absolutely necessary which makes sense and makes the Interview throughout absolutely very interesting throughout. To the point genuinely honest which i have always Loved whom i have always Highly Honoured Quentin Crisp, especially for the first time that i had watched Naked Civil Servant with my Mom, Dad and my Brother back in 1975 at my tender age of 10 years. Which likewise i myself was a little bit feminine for a boy which i have always thought of it being natural, human nature long before the word gay and homosexual first entered my mind. It's why i can honestly say that i can relate with Quentin Crisp, the boys at school never ever wanted anything to do with me throughout my childhood years only the girls were my best friends throughout. Thank you for sharing this Wonderful Remarkable Interview ☕💝💖🌠🌟
Absolutely Outstanding Wonderful Perfectly Interview Throughout Absolutely Intelligent Magnificent Of Naturally Beauty Extremely Generous Truthfully. Quentin Crisp as always been that i have always Loved Highly Honoured, whom i have always can personally relate to, while my own childhood years which i was always very feminine and being gay for my past 56 years of my life. I have always looked onto Quentin Crisp ever since 1975 of the Naked Civil Servant. Thank you for sharing this Wonderful Remarkable Interview ☕💝💖🌠🌟
For the most part of that interview, the host paid no attention to what Mr Crisp said; he just rattled off his list of questions while all those hilarious remarks by Mr Crisp remained unrequited and ignored.
I *ADORE* Quentin, truly I do; I dearly wish I could have met him, but the "friendly" America he describes seems like a short bubble in time, it certainly doesn't exist any more, in fact it's far worse.
So interesting. If Nelson Sullivan had not passed to soon I think he would be like Mr Crisp. Its a shame they never met...................Peace and stay safe Rian.
The Americans love him because he is so quintessentially English, and his entire eccentric persona and wit is a result of that upbringing, both positive and negative. He, being English, is critical of himself and the those English qualities that make him unique, and believes himself to be American. Very disappointing, but a very common attitude amongst the self-deprecating English, giving other more boastful societies like the Americans, to knock you as you knock yourself.
He was young and nervous and Quentin Crisp was a very strong character. Rian is now a sort of cabaret performer, widely acclaimed for his shows as a raconteur.
This is an false appraisal of British ( not English television). The odd thing is Quentin never had or watched a TV! He's speaks with a pseudo authority. Thev1970s had superb programmes with American favourites too.
The host seems to be a bigger freak than Quentin , the only thing is that Quentin was always asked the same bullshit questions over and over always gives the same mundane responses . Q.c. must have thought if it's not broken don't fix it , it must have been boring after a bit.
I woke to find my foreskin going up and down by itself at a rate of 500 pulls a minute there was a distinct smell of cigar smoke in the air and the ghostly voice said now then now then and how's about that then
You didn't listen to him then, did you Christopher? He was never a 'wanna be' - admits he failed at everything he did. He faced the fact that he had to be just himself - not just a gay man, like you. Boring? Not interesting? Oh get real - could you instantly reply to disconnected questions without a pause, always with an intelligent, fluent, unexpected response? If so, you too would be on TV all the time, as he used to be.
@@CS88754 Totally right, Richard III - in fact, I think that I would reverse Christopher's view of QC, and say that he (Christopher) comes across as a gay man who is "a tired old self-obsessed wanna-be" who has shown no evidence of understanding how he is now able to enjoy the fruits of Quentin's relentless and massive acheivements in legalising what was considered to be 'queer' and 'bent'. Nobody thought then that there was anything 'gay' about these deviates. I am, to be clear, totally hetero. But I was intrigued by Quentin Crisp, back in the day. I wanted to understand for myself what all the fuss was about. I had been to a British public school - a boarding school, boys only in those days. Maybe this gave me a broad view of sexuality? I booked to see Quentin's touring one-man show, when he came to Salisbury Playhouse, for a one-night stand (sorry about that, couldn't resist it, cheap gag!). I expected a diatribe on the battle faced by an openly homosexual in everyday life. But not a bit of it - Quentin never once referred to the subject; he was entrancing; he spoke without pause; never at a loss for exactly the right word; eloquent in both his love and mastery of the English language, and his unique philosophical approach to life. He spoke for Everyman, not a minority group defined by their sexual preference. I learned a lesson that evening that I have lived by ever since - be yourself.

I'm thrilled to have just stumbled onto Quentin today. This has added color and depth to my life.
i saw the naked cival servant and loved it and saw his world in action docu and felt the same! he is amazing !
Same for me! I just discovered him and you describe perfectly how I feel 😃
Bless the interviewer - he was so nervous at times here but did a great job. Cute too!
Agree with you. He is now a sort of cabaret raconteur.

@@mscott3918So he really overcame his fear to speak publicly, kudos to him! 😊
never seen such a gentle, polite interviewer before ...wonderful interview ...
That is a good point. Interviewers today seem so rude today.

I truly enjoy every moment of listening to this guy. Also, the interviewer had so many good, thoughtful questions.
i took quentin to lunch twice. his storys were vunderbar !!!!

This is incredible, he actually speaks here, rather than quotes. Great, great!
Enjoyed this. Quentin was one of the wittiest, most perceptive chaps ever.
A good interviewer... he let's his guest speak.
Quentin was a gentle soul
I wish I'd known him personally 😔
God bless him 🙏 ❤
Many talk or write about existentialism but few actually live it: Quentin Crisp is one of those few.
CRISP changed my life with this advice: " if you have a prominant physical feature that you cannot completely hide is automatically your trademark".
This was a delight. The interviewer was wonderful and Quentin was dazzling. I adore him so much and I am glad he moved to New York and was welcomed.🥀🥀♥️
Real nice interview, mister Crisp always delivers, but also very nice questioning.
Quentin was truly wonderful.

A brilliant interview. Done with such professionalism. Really good.

Denis darling
He was a distant cousin of William Henry Pratt, whose stage name was Boris Karloff.
@@mAiSiEbOOOOHe does actually resemble Mr. Karlov.
Quentin passed on of a heart attack having returned to London to do sold out shows.

Although the interviewer is rather nervous, he lets Crisp talk and asks reasonable follow up questions and that allows for a good interview to emerge.
I never came out, either. I was never in. I asked my family "How old was I when you realized I was gay?". My homosexuality appears on GPS.

I never watched TV when I lived in NYC.
This is local cable access in Manhattan in early 80s in svhs or beta.
In another interview he said people in NY told him most people your age are going to a nursing home not to emigrate to American.
He joked that he would not be able to recreate the dust piled up of his bedsit in London he lived in over 40 years.
What are the background voices? Were there other people around while this was being taped? NYC??
Cable access station. Could be a TV set was on in background.
Between Two Ferns. 🤭😊
I think Quentin is a Saint.
The local cable access shows even today use fake plants to create quick sets to create illusion of 3-D in a 2-D format with the key lighting.
Terrible interviewer, reading his note cards and paying no attention to the replies. Didn't even smile at Mr Crisp's quips.
He was young and nervous and Quentin Crisp was a very strong character. Rian is now a sort of cabaret performer, widely acclaimed for his shows as a raconteur.

He always refers to England, never Britain. In many redpects he remained provinvial minded.
Even manufactures printed made in England in 60s 70s Great Britain became more widely used later or United Kingdom because of EU.
