God Bless George for all the happiness you gave to so many people. This song always brings a tear to my eyes because it’s the last song I heard him sing. He will always be The ukulele man.
He plays the ukulele, not the banjo. (Although he is playing a banjolele, here) The clue is in the title of the song, as well as about 20 times within the song...
It isn't quite my era but for all that it was certainly no utopian time I think increasingly people will be looking back at it with regret that it's overall goodness & decency may never be seen again. Something to do with senses of duty and community, even - dare I say it? (as a fervent disbeliever) - a love of God.
Movie censorship in the USA at this time would never have allowed the suggestive lyrics about the woman undressing because she thought he was a doctor, or the other woman who asked to see his underwear because she thought he was an underwear salesman.
...a lady shouted out one day don't clean those windows yet, I'm in my bath so go away but promptly in I ran, I'm not cleaning windows now I'm the ukelele man.. ...I see your point
@Jerry D. Metz It's misspelled here in the title and description of this video as "ukelele" and "ukalele". And the correct pronunciation in Hawaiian - which is the language this word comes from - is "oo-koo-leh-leh", not "youk-a-lay-lee". The incorrect pronunciations are why people spell the word wrong.
And he had at least THREE houses at one time, a Mansion at Barnacre, ( 'Sullom End' ) Nr.Garstang, Lancashire, and one at Pressall called Fern Hill /' Fernhill' ( that one became a Nightclub & is now a lovely private house again . He was a Massive, massive star & a lovely fellow, who had a very domineering wife.
Me & my brothers loved watching George Formby on the telly 55-60 years ago. Wow I just realised that I am old. Ha ha🤣🤣👍🇬🇧

That bit of ukelele playing that we get at the end of all George's numbers is fantastic but there is never enough of it!
Every great rock guitarist owns a small debt of gratitude to George and a tip of the hat to Hank Marvin.
Apparently George Harrison was inspired by him as well 👍.
Oh George.. come back and cheer us all up, for the Blighty you once swang your banjo in is such a dispiriting and menacing place now..

He's Way ahead of his time!!
I love how he still goes with his 'saucy' lines while all these little kids are around. Proper class xDDD
That's the best part.
Many of George's songs were banned by the BBC.
It’s so innocent I love it ♥️
1:48 🤣
@@deltaflyer9078But the children are unaware ❤
Dead right! I find myself waiting for the solo in every song.
He was a brilliant player.
I just randomly remembered catching this on TV 25 years ago... thank you internet :)
Reminds me of being a kid....48 now lol
Always loved this song.
I love how he's singing a song innuendo in it in front of all those kids lol.
The best Thing Ever To Come OUT of WIGAN

They've got a lovely pier...
Wait, aren't the Lathums from Wigan? Mind you, fetch me a TARDIS, that's a double bill I'd be happy with.
George would have achieved fame even in this age because stardom was complimented by his love for singing
still loving it
"Spare A Copper" had the best songs for sure.
Beautiful, great.
Brilliant song! look at the wee showoff at 2:08 he pushes himself all the way to the front.
Yes, the little sod.
Interesting to see and hear the influences of American swing music.

I'm a non talented boy, can you lend me the chords please?
2018 c:
Is it just me or, isn't he playing a banjo? Playing a banjo, and singing about being a ukelele man.
He always played a "banjolele". A hybrid instrument.
It's "ukulele", not "ukalele" or "ukelele".
