  • Most people who like muzzleloaders also like powder horns, which are works of art in their own right. The Honorable Company of Horners, as art of its goal to educate its members and the public about the history of powder horns, has published a book by Jay Hopkins called, "Bone Tipped & Banded Horns."
This book is based on Mr. Hopkins' theory that horns can be identified, based on the characteristics, by their geographic region of origin. The 385 page book is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full color photographs of historic powder horns.

Great video and good info! Been thinking about buying a horn myself, so this was quite helpful. Still can't decide which horn to get tho!

When out of lead balls horns make great Grenades.

Were powder "horns" ever made from other materials, such as gourds?

Yes, depending on the region and time period. Cane was used as was wood and then into the 1850's came brass. Horn was popular and readily available, durable and as noted in the video, was turned into works of art, not just for holding powder either.

I have thought about a powder horn. I shoot bp rifle occasionally and revolver a lot. Is a horn good to use with a revolver?

I don't see why not. You have to measure out your powder no matter what you're using be it a flask or a horn.

Steve buckskinner 54 I like my flask but a horn would be so much more realistic to me. I may just invest in one. Is there a name that makes a good one that is relatively inexpensive?

Check out Crazy Crow Trading Post. They have some pretty nice horns at various prices but for the most part pretty inexpensive. I myself would love to get a beautiful custom Powder Horn but it's not financially in the works for me right now either. So I have one in mind that I plan on getting from Crazy Crow for now.

I prefer to use flasks with revolvers, but a horn and a powder measure works too.

Yes. And I would think that a flask is probably more common when it comes to cap and ball revolvers.

Does he mention anything about horns in Texas from the 30s and 40s in the book?
