  • Following the Battle of Fulford Gate in Part 1, we march onward to the second great battle of 1066, Stamford Bridge. Harald Hardrada's Viking army is camped outside the city of York when a cloud of dust appears on the road to the west. The Vikings are stunned to meet the vanguard of a large Saxon army rushing into battle! The historical battle of Stamford Bridge is a bloodbath, but how will our Viking king deal with this sudden danger? And can Harold Godwinson find a way to match the smashing historical success he won in 1066? Find out now!
    Join Little Wars TV for a fantastic, "pocket sized" battle played on a compact, 2'x2' tabletop in 6mm scale. Our 1066 series showcases how you can fight the biggest, most famous battles of the Dark Ages and early Medieval era without a big budget! If you like our armies, they are 6mm scale Baccus Miniatures, though you can play Big Battle Ravenfeast with ANY scale figures you like!

    This battle was a great as always, interesting to see how stout of defenders the Dane were even with the heavy disadvantage (of course slightly offset by the "Bridge super berserker"). I actually found a battle you guys might want to delve into, if not for war game purpose just an interesting context of the second world War concerning Polish troops, this takes place in 1944 around the end of the Falaise pocket. A II corps polish tank unit and some light infantry hold a hilltop referenced to as "The Mace" which lay between both German escape routes between Trun and Chambois, and defend while being undersupplied and behind enemy lines. My source for this battle is a book titled Six armies in Normandy by John Keegan, Chapter 7 in a segment titled "The Mace"

    All kidding aside @littlewarstv, I love this new scenario. If you are taking suggestions for scenarios, have you ever considered a less taught about historical event such as the Raid on the Medway? Or other battles of the Anglo-Dutch wars? The British might not like to be reminded of the Anglo-Dutch wars, but the British defeat did lead to them to invest in their navy and becoming the eventual ruler of the seas and with it the world's foremost superpower.

    In 1054 King Edward sent Ealdred, Bishop of Worcester, to the court of the German emperor to set in train negotiations with the king of Hungary for the return of Edward the Exile. Ealdred was not at first successful, and in 1056 Earl Harold Godwinson's journey to Flanders, and possibly on to Germany and Hungary, was probably undertaken to further negotiations. The Exile finally arrived in England in 1057 with his wife and children, but died within a few days, on 19 April, without meeting the King. He was buried in Old St Paul's Cathedral.[8]

    • @Lorian667
      @Lorian667 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could scale them up to 10mm and use the same rules. A base only represents a unit, it does not matter how many soldiers are on it.

    • @johnscarr70
      @johnscarr70 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could go 2mm and not have to worry at all. it works for me!
      The big bonus is although the paint job may not be the best, poor eyesight means you can't tell anyway once they're lined up.
      Seriously, I find 6mm a breeze. I'm in my 50s and wear glasses for reading. My 6mm are exclusively fantasy models and exclusively Irregular miniatures, but it's mostly about the impression of blocks of troops, so colour choices are the main factor rather than the details which are essential for larger scales.

    Great game as always LWTV, and love the professional interviews that help cement the historical context of the battles. One question however: why was the modern version of the English white dragon (the design itself borrowed from the Welsh flag) used to represent the Saxons as an icon in this report, instead of the more traditional Saxon Wyvern (either Gold on Red, as befitting an Earl of Wessex, or the more modern white Wyvern on Red background as per modern usage)?

    Fun! I love the board, will there be a how-to video about it? As an aside: I think "fun" trumps "dogmatic accuracy", but having said that, is the mounted huscarls a historical unit? All I've read is that mounted troops were barely if at all used (and not used by the Saxons), and that "mounted" troops just used horses to arrive to the field of battle, where they would dismount before doing battle. This use of huscarls however seems to fling them on horseback right at the battle... (Again: I don't think this detracts from the fun, this was an amazing video as always! Just curious and that's why I'm asking)

    The battle of Hastings was actually at Crowhurst.

    Curses LWTV… I must stop watching your games as I’ve now got to buy 3 6mm armies and paint them!!!
    Looking forward to the final battle at Hastings!!!

    What would have happened to the campaign if the vikings were to be defeated in the first battle? Would Harold Godwinson have extra units against William?
    I would love to know more about the campaign system and if-then conditions linking the battles, etc.

    I offer Harald "six feet of the ground of England, or perhaps more seeing that he is taller than most men" -- allegedly Harold Godwinson

    It couldn't be a historical wargame without some nitpicking so ... Harald Godwinson was not simply king of the Saxons of England but the king of England. He was king of all within England, Celts, Danes, Angles and the Saxons.

    I have a bit of a problem with wargames when it comes to engagements.
    So lets use the cavalry charge in the beginning as a good example. Lets say for the sake of argument the infantry survived the initial charge. In reality, those engaged men, both cavalry and infantry, would wear out over time. In wargames it's usually a simple kill/no kill mechanic. In some cases models get removed, but in cases like this, there's no accounting for men falling out due to depleted morale over time, wounded men get taken out of combat, men get de-horsed, and formations becoming tired over time.
    Even elite formations will have some temporary losses as an engagement is joined. But there isn't a mechanic to account for that. I'm unsure of how to model that in a game, but it's an important mechanic of war that a lot of wargames overlook.

      An interesting point you raise. There ARE games that track losses and degradation over time. Some games are kill/no kill, but plenty exist that handle this differently. They typically require a roster to keep track of strength. Volley and Bayonet did this 30 years ago. More recently, games like General d Armee and Blucher both do the same. Even Fire and Fury tracked losses to the extent a brigade would go from Fresh to Worn to Spent, with various penalties as you degrade. For players, it’s a question of how much paperwork and tracking you want to do

    If you want to read some wonderful historical fiction based in the period that really evokes the atmosphere you could do worse than check out Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series of books.

    Again; IT WAS NOT DANES! In fact there were a lot of Anglo-Danes on the Anglo-Saxon side.
    Kin Sven of Denmark invades to support The Danelaw against William in 1069, 1071 (or 1072), and I believe another time before his son Knud gathers all the Danish Leding to invade and take back the country in 1086. He is delayed in joining them, so they rebel, pursue him through the country to Odense, where he seeks refuge in Skt. Alban's with his brother Benedict, and his hird. And where the rebels kill him and gives Denmark our first royal saint.
    This threat makes William Harry the North, basically killing most of the inhabitants to prevent further rebellions, and compose The Domesday Book.

    Just a question - if Harold Haldrada had won in y'all's wargame today, would it be he facing William at Hastings and not Godwinson?

    • @LittleWarsTV
      @LittleWarsTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we were always going to run the three historical battles in sequence-but losses apply. So if Godwinson was killed at Stamford Bridge, for example, only his brothers would have been present at Hastings (less any other elite Huscarls lost at Stamford Bridge as well)

    I'm curious whether there are any 6mm paper Viking models or whether it'd be better for units to be abstracted with like counters at that point.

    At least the berserker made his legacy stand in both battles 🤩⚔️
