- Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy stars in this THE BIG PICTURE release. His two young sons' prying questions about space-age missiles prompt Murphy to make a tour of modern Army installations and revisit some of the places he saw in Europe during World War II.

First stop is Germany and Hitler's stadium in Nuremberg. Moving on to Wurzburg, Murphy stops at the Third Division area and inspects the platoon he commanded as a First Lieutenant 15 years before. In Germany, the most decorated soldier of World War II gets a look at the Corporal missile and the Redstone missile. A side trip to Norway gives him an orientation view of the Nike Ajax and Hercules ground-to-air missiles. Returning to the United States, Lt. Gen. Arthur G. Trudeau gives the movie star a grand tour of White Sands Missile Range to watch the LaCrosse, the Little John, and the Hawk in action. A highlight of the White Sands visit is the successful firing of the mighty Sergeant missile. At his residence again, Murphy explains to his children about how the free world is being protected by the Army's arsenal of missiles.
Of special interest is the interior of the Murphy home which was used during filming as well as scenes of the two sons of Audie Murphy asking their father questions about war and nuclear weapons.
Audie Murphy was again decorated by the U.S. Army with the U.S. Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for his work in this production.

Audie Murphy was a man of true grit. He volunteered to serve his country and saw the horrors of war. In another interview about his experiences in the war I could tell that he was severely impacted by what he went through, I wish we could have offered him the help that's available now. I am extremely proud of him and what he did for us. A fellow Texan who represents the character and resolve of our people in this great state. I salute you and I thank you.
Speaking of True Grit, Audie should have starred in that movie instead of that draft dodging fake John Wayne...

What can one say , about Audie Murphy, what words could we use to describe him. Brave, honorable, strong, humble, a soldier, an American, a son, a husband, a father, a friend, a good man,an intelligent man, an actor, there are so many words that we could use, to describe him, they all seem so inadequate ,but we all Thank God that we had his presence on this earth. He died way too young. He would have contributed so much more to our world, had he lived. He left a legacy ,for all of us. His extrodinary life ,sets an example, of what all of us ,could be. Thank you Audie , may you rest in blessed peace. 🇱🇷

Damn good Soldier, damn good cowboy and a damn good man its a shame we lost him he inspired a lot of boys who became men regardless what they became army, navy, marine or airforce. We may fight each other in the bar but when anyone tried to hurt any of us we all stood proud. Thank you for sharing your video my compliments sir

Audie Murphy narrates this so wonderfully to help us all understand what nuclear weapons are about and the way that the armed services are using them to help protecting the free world.... As I watch this again tonight I remember watching it with Daddy and my Grandpa as a young child and I found it fascinating learning about what these missiles capabilities were.... My gosh, just to think if nuclear missiles were available in WWll the destruction would have been emence and far greater than those weapons that were used in WWll.... Audie Murphy not only played his part in the war, but in civilian life he still played his part to help us all understand the enormity of just how frail peace could be if nothing was done to protect the world.... The great Audie Leon Murphy the most highly decorated soldier in history, he lived in fear during those three years of the war, that fear helped to keep him alive and bring him home to his beloved family, his brothers and sisters.... He may have only been a young lad of 16 when he enlisted but at 19 he came home a man....

From a boy that had to drop out of school at 14 to spokesman for the Army. What a trip he has taken, If only we had more like him in our country. I get choked up just thinking of all the awards he received and all the battles he helped win.
He payed a high price. He had PTSD and was homeless after the war.
I am glad to know that I was not the only one to get choked up. We were lucky to have men like him, and in this Country today, we need those men more than ever.
My hero when I was growing up. What a shame that he suffered for so many years from his experiences in the war and that tragically, he died so young at age 45. I wish I could have had the honor of meeting this man and shaking his hand. His grave-site will be the first on my list to pay respects to when I can visit Arlington Cemetery.
Probably Americas greatest patriotic soldier, most decorated soldier. Great actor, husband, father and all around dedicated citizen and loved his Country. Our nation's needs thousands more like him right now in this troubling time when communism is trying to take over America and the world once again. We sure miss you Audey Murohy. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Growing up in the late '50's, early '60's, he was my hero! I remember watching this in school in the sixth grade, when our class was studying atomic energy. From a film projector, a relic of the past. Don't suppose anyone younger than 50 remembers what that was.

Audie Murphy would be about 35 years old here, and he still looks like he's just 19. When he fought the war he looked like he was 12. So meek and soft spoken.

It's amazing to think that I'm a 'product' of our presence in Germany. My Dad served in Dexheim, Germany during the '60's and brought my mom home with him.
What an honor - both ways . The most decorated American soldier of WWII visiting the past and getting the executive treatment. A Hero, short in stature but with the heart of a lion.

13:00 The solution ended up being Ronald Reagan, Margret Thatcher, and Pope John-Paul II. I was stationed in Germany 14 years after this was filmed and visited the Hitler Stadium a number of times. Some neo-nazis still saw it as some symbol of glory. All I saw it as a memorial to defeat. I am thankful we had some men like Mr. Murphy to set the standard.

I've been to every place in Germany that Audie was and more.
I patrolled that border many times.
Zeppeliln Field where Hitler used to speak to troops had been refurbished sometime between when Audie was there and the late 70's when I was. They were using it for outdoor concerts and festivals.
We used to go to those border towns and the communist had bricked in the Windows of buildings facing us so the residents couldn't view freedom.
All bridges were cut except a few, and mines laid in a no man's land.
In the country there were machine gun bunkers buried in the hillsides.
It was real!

My dad was a cameraman with the “Big Picture”
I worked with the Nike-Ajax, The Nike Hercules, the Little John and the honest John back in the early 60's. My last assignment was with a Honest John unit in the Northern part of Germany until mid-1963. When over there I had no idea we had units in Norway. The Redstone Rocket had a yield of 500 kilotons, 23 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Nagasaki Japan.
