I really enjoyed seeing your layout. It is truly amazing seeing and hearing the chuffing sound of American Flyer steam engines coming down the track pulling her load. Thank you for sharing the history of your engine and the story behind it. 😊

Thanks for all of your comments and for watching the videos. I don’t have many people in this area that I can share this hobby with so the TH-cam channel gives me that chance and I appreciate all of the comments.

Always love watching your trains running especially at scale speeds. Thanks for posting the link to the scale speed calculator in your last video.

I’m glad you’re enjoying them. I’ll admit that the scale speed video was one of my favorites to put together. Thanks for watching.

Chugging and smoking to perfection. The motors in the steamers were some of the best motors in the toy train business.

Yes, they were. Reliable and relatively simple to work on. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

Looks good, nice scaled speed, of most importance is amp draw required to perform this work. The test configuration developed by Gilbert engineers states motor to be tested with remote control unit at 12 volts not to draw more than .175 amps, locomotive to run minimum 9 RPM or 9 times forward, 140” oval track per minute (for complete test track configuration by number of pieces and accessories, glad to share), then locomotive to run minimum 8.5 RPM or 8 1/2 times reverse, 140” oval per minute. Most important load not to draw more than 2.1 amps pulling 4 box cars at 12 volts. Specs show Pull-mor drivers on gear axle, sounds like wheel slippage indicating tracktive force reduction, more work, and higher amp draw, just curious. Nothing like a long consist, agree I would not perform this but once. Enjoy!

Thanks for this information. It’s a lot and not necessarily my expertise but I’ll certainly take time to study it and put my multi-meter to use. Doesn’t hut to learn something new! Thanks for watching.

I'm so impressed by this 70 year old train

They really knew how to make these things, didn't they. Not only the trains but also the accessories- I love the ingenuity they showed in designing them.

About 20 cars is the max I can pull on my layout too. My Northern will slip under this load because it does not have traction tires.

There are a number of variables involved in how an engine will pull: the weight of the engine, the traction from the wheels, the weight of the cars, the cleanness of the track, the number of curves and how tight they are, the weight and lubrication of the cars being pulled, etc. It amazes me what those lightweight Atlantics will pull under the right conditions. All of these kinds of variables are what keeps the hobby interesting. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

The latter 326 will pull more then 20 cars

I’ve seen some videos with Gilbert era engines pulling more cars and the Hudson probably could pulled more but I decided to stop at 20. Good point. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
