Hey, Jeff! This gave me the start that I needed to learn the pentatonic patterns for my jazz standards. This helped so much, man. Keep of the good work and thank you so much!
+Yashaya Yasharahla Sup! We will be getting into scales and arpeggios for the ii-V-I progressions we looked at today. Remember, ii-V-I progressions need to be worked on in minor and Major keys.
Jeffery, thanks. Very helpful and I would like to jump over to your site for learning a bit more about practice routines. I feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of info out there and I think I need some help narrowing my focus.
+BigAl43229 Hey! I am offering a free Skype lesson so contact me through my site for scheduling. The is a massive information overload between youtube and the web lots of fragmented and bad info leads to confusion. Let me help clear it up.
Thanks Richard! I have alot of students who have a high G and it is ok. Just make sure you follow the technique tips I show in the video. Also, all the notation for my lessons is free on my site. Let me know if you would like to run through this or anything else on skype? Jeff.
Oh what a great lesson, thanks! I really wanna learn soloing on the ukulele, but I don't really understand which pentatonic scale I can use over which chords and keys.. Anyway, this helps a lot :)
Because the numbers written in the chord diagrams are left hand fingerings not fret numbers. Would be happy to explain and demonstrate in real time on Skype.
Maybe this is a silly question, because maybe I don't understand pentatonic scales very well yet but... what are the most useful pentatonic scales to learn on the ukulele? C major obviously... But if you had to pick a handful to learn, which would they be?
Hi Kendal awesome question! Pentatonic scales are 5 note scales that come from full Major and Minor scales. The problem with placing all 5 patterns on the ukulele is a range issue based on the key. I picked C Major and A minor because all 5 patterns would fit before you run out of fretboard. I would pick D Major, Bb Major and E Major to get started. These are keys where all 5 patterns will fit. If you look at my TAB for the lesson it also shows a suggested chord shape for each pattern. This is very helpful in memorizing the patterns and in switch back and forth from rhythm to lead playing. To totally understand pentatonic scales and keys it will require studying music theory. Small answer to a big question. Let me know if you need more help on Skype? Thanks, Jeff
Thanks! I tend to go on and off with learning guitar and ukulele and I want to get beyond just knowing a few chords. But I get a little overwhelmed! You do free skype lessons? Or just one free?
Hey, first class is free. Please email me through my site and I will send a link to the theory book I use for guitar and some other worksheets: www.jeffrey-thomas.com
Hi Maile! The uke I used has a low G and is tuned: G C E A. Might be the low G that is throwing you off? We can meet on Skype to go over any questions you have? www.jeffrey-thomas.com
Wow.... that is so generous of you, Jeff! I have a rather old, soprano Kamaka ukelele (my parent's old baby.) Today I cannot meet... but, maybe sometime not so long from now? When might be a good time?? Aloha!!!!
+ilsignorcarlo Hi, there is no "D Major" chord in the key of C Major. There is a D minor...not sure what you are getting at? The diationic triads or 3 note chords in the key of C Major are: C Major, D minor, E minor, F Major, G Major, A minor and B diminished.
+Jeffrey Thomas you're right. I should've written D minor, but I actually meant "D" in general. Anyway, I thought you were playing a chord for each note of the pentatonic scale, but at the 7th fret (which is a D note) you play a Em/C chord (or something like that). Why not D minor?
+ilsignorcarlo Hi! I typically use the Major and Relative minor for chord shapes within the Pentatonic scales. So, for the key of C the chords I use are C Major and A minor but all the chords within the key will work as well as chord progressions. The best way to put this in motion is to try playing the patterns over a chord progression in the key of C Major or A minor and of course A blues. Hope that helps? This is a BIG subject and will require a understanding of music theory. Let me know if you want to meet on Skype to clear it up further. Thanks!

hi JEFF
The 2nd diagram starts on the 2nd fret but you put the number as 1 and 2 starts on the 3rd but you wrote 2. pls explain

Does anybody know if he is using a low G string?
Yes, he’s using a low G.
@@JoeBlakeonQuora Yes I'm using a low G
Is your Uke tuned to GCEA?
Hey Rommel and yes GCEA with a low G. Thanks!
Hi... this is not on a standard tuning, for ukelele, is it?? Um, ah.... how did you tune your uke?? (utter beginner here...)

Hi Maile, ready when you are. I am teaching Monday thru Sunday. Schedule lesson through the site. Thanks!
Really nice lesson. I don't have to low G so I have to fake it :)
Go for it!
aren't you supposed to play a D chord at the seventh fret? Or, anyway, shouldn't there be a D somewhere?
+ilsignorcarlo Hi, there is no "D Major" chord in the key of C Major. There is a D minor...not sure what you are getting at?

Low G?
Low or high
It should be noted that this is a low g tuned ukulele.
Robert Morgan Added to the description now. The patterns and technique will work on both low and high G ukes.
Hi Robert! Let me know if you need any additional help?
I have to buy me a Ukulele ;-)
Do it!
I should have read his video comments first. Low G string.
Hi Shane! No worries too many details right. Decided to run this lesson with a "Low G" to keep the range on the low end.
