Hi Mont Marte Joe, just letting you know, that I did finish my Klimt inspired tree. I couldn't affford the gold leaf, but I did it this way: Golden yellow back ground and brown slopey ground on which the tree stands. The branches are wavey and the twigs in spirals. Cheeky red owl looking a bit confused on one branch and lots of colourful dots. I wanted to give some glimmer and I found some adhesive tree leafs which I placed on. Looks fab and I'm sure my grandchild to be will love it :-)
You are a GREAT teacher. The way you speak to us, your students is so easy for you. I have learned a lot from your videos. I subscribed and look forward to more videos. Thank You for taking the time to help all us aspiring artists.
Hi Sweet Bianca19, I can't remember if I had replied to you or not sorry! There is a pdf version on the Mont Marte website which has a big picture and step-by-step instructions :) The link is now in the description.
Hi WisteriaWishes, yes Klimpt is amazing. Mont Marte gold leaf sells for under AU$5.00, and you get 14 sheets ! From my experience Varnishing does stop tarnishing but it deadens the leaf a bit also, so it is really the lesser of two evils. Have a bit of fun and do some experimenting and Keep on painting! Mont marte Joe
Hi bill, yes you can substitute spray paint for the leaf. As you have pointed out it won't provide the same extent of 'glimmer'. But as I say art is an experiment so one needs to experiment. Thanks for the comment I'm glad you can gain something from it. Peace Mont Marte Joe
***** Hi stephane, we're really glad you are inspired, sometimes that can be a hard feeling to conjure up. Thanks for the encouraging comment and keep on painting aye ! ;) Joe.
Hi Pearly403, sorry for the late reply. Regarding your question murals are quite an undertaking,I don't know how we would go about teaching it in lesson form as we are mainly studio based. It is a great idea though! One thing I would suggest is to use Acrylic paint, paint on the background first, then, draw it up on a transparency and image it up on to the wall with an over head projector, transfering the drawing like that. House paints are ok to use as an under base/background :) mont mart joe
Hello pearly403, That is so great to here that you finished ' Gustav kimpts tree' and I'm sure your grandchild will love it, the gift of Art is unique and cannot matched I feel. Incidently the Mont Marte Gold leaf that I used retails for AU$3.95 and you get 14 sheets, It is imitation and it looks fantastic. Keep on painting, oh and we would love to see your painting. You could send us an image to if you feel like it. You can find the link in the description. -Mont MarteJjoe.
Hello Dulcearoha, I just wanted to tell you that I reposted a Q and A regarding varnishing and you are right if you varnish your Leaf it will be more inclined not to tarnish. Just use a Oil Based Varnish. Sorry for any confusion. Mont Marte Joe
You are so easy going, nice approach! I am a Klimt fan and have always been intimated about trying to capture the gold effect I love so much in his work, your tutorial has inspired me to try..hail to "Pallas Athene" my most fave Klimt piece, to ambitious for a novice but you have enthused me try something of my own! Awesome stuff MontMarte..MwahMwah
I'm not a great fan of Klimt, but it was great fun. I love the ink works (El Torros) of Picasso and the wavey human shapes of Matisse. As for obtaining the gold leaf...I life in UK and over here if you want to buy gold leaf you have to pay gold price. Thing is that your tree and your rose got me into painting pictures again and for that inspiration I can't thank you enough. I wish I could send a pic of my Klimt-tree I think you'd love it
Awwww MadMumProductions, that is a really nice thing to say, your very welcome and we're so glad to have another friend in the Mont Marte gang. Don't forget to join our facebook! Thanks again and keep on painting. MMJ
Hi Mont Mart Joe, no problem for the delay. Great idea with the over head projector. I will definitely do one wall in HER (yes, it's going to be a little girl :-) ) room, but with you suggesting the use of an over head projector, I now have developed the crazy idea to paint Schloss Neuschwanstein (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle) and a land in which fairies live on her walls :-). It'll be fun :-) and I make sure I take pics before she's old enough to paint over ;-)
MontMarte, I was going to do a Klimt-like painting and I happened upon your wonderful video. However, I had a different plan of action to which I was going to try. What would you think of using gold leaf spray paint covering the background and then paint on the tree? I realize spray paint wouldn't look quite the same as imitation gold leaf but I feel it could be a good substitute.
hi Mont Mart Joe, I LOVE your picture of Gustav Klimt and Im trying to paint it at the moment :) Is it possible to add a whole picture of the finished work? that would be really helpul :))
Hey there keybladeguy, yeah if you use the proper size no worries at all, This leafing size is great with watercolour. Actually the silver is a great addition to use on any areas depicting metallic surfaces on a watercolour, like chain mail, helmets and swords as this is almost impossible to suggest with the medium. Peace mont Marte Joe
Hi Linda, thanks for your questions! For this project we used leafing size (not glue). Any solvent-based varnish would be suitable, but make sure it's not water-based because this will ruin your gold leafing. Good luck :)
Hello michiilah, we're glad you found it to :) Due to the non porus nature of matallic leaf, it does not accept acrylic paint very well unfortunatlely, it can always be worked around though , and If you use the proper size (glue) it will stay on forever, and we love questions :) Keep on painting MMJ
Hi resortraveler yes depending on where it is it can after a while. I have heard of people using retouching Varnish and a soft brush. Thanks for the comment. Mont Marte Joe
Thanks dude! Appreciate your comment! Actually the Mont Marte Imitation Gold Leaf is only about $4-$5 for a pack of 25 sheets. So it's very affordable to use! ~Mont Marte Joe
Hi MonteMarteJoe, I love this video as I am a great fan of Kustav Klimt! I have sketched the picture onto my canvas and I am just about to start the gold leaf process. I wanted to check if ordinary PVA glue is fine to use? Thank you -)
+Sarah Curtis Hi sarah sorry I missed your first message :( No it doesn't it doesn't have tack. Or stay open. You should be able to salvage your work. Just apply the size over the pva. it will still key on. Joe
i'm so happy i found this!!! i really wanted to use gustav klimt's style as inspiration for my year 12 body of work. could i ask if it's alright to paint over the gold leaf after it's stuck on? and does it last long or does it fall off easily? any tips? sorry for all the questions! :)
Thanks for this video.. can you let me know how you sealed this gold leaf after you finished? I was wondering is there any way you can leave the gold leaf without any sealent as it looks great the way it is. How did Klimt seal his gold leaf back in the day.
Hi luminor, the leaf was not sealed in this case. The opinion is divided regarding the effectiveness of a sealer. If you choose to use a sealer make sure it is Oil based. Mr Klimpt didn't use any sealer over his leaf as he used 'Real' Gold leaf as opposed to imitation gold leaf as is used in this project. Real gold does not tarnish you see. Thank you for commenting. Joe
Hi! thank you for your video! I have been playing around with gold leaf, and was wondering if you have any suggestions for removing paint that accidentally get's on the gold leaf? I try to wipe it off right away, but sometimes I don't catch it in time.
Hi Caitlyn, if possible the gold leaf should be adhered last. If you do get paint onto the leaf the trick is to remove it as soon as possible with a clean rag dampened with methylated spirits. Thanks for the comment.
Wow! Great job! Your channel was recommended to me and I find it very inspiring and interesting the Tree of life. I was unable to access the pdf file. Is there another way to get it? Thanks so much. Great project to work and vey symbolic. Blessings and take and be safe. New subscriber!
Hi Crisalida, thank you for your comment! You can find the lesson PDF by clicking the 'How to guide' button on our site: www.montmarte.net/create/articles/create-gustav-klimt-inspired-tree-painting
Hey man, quick question, I have to do a Klimt-style painting for my art class, I bought these sheets but I want to do tiny flakes instead of a full background, is it possible to splatter the glue all over the page and then press the sheets down to only get little bits of gold leaf? It's a watercolored pencil piece on decently sturdy drawing paper, and I just want to make sure that it won't accidentally leave huge chunks on my page. Thanks!
wow that's awesome Dulcearoha, Yes I love that work too, that piece would be hard due to the complex gold scale like armour, Love that your enthused though you need to strike while the iron is hot :) MMJ
It's great to hear that you are back into painting Pearly403! I would love to see your picture, if you have a photo of your Klimt-tree you could post it or email it on our facebook page (link above).
Hi There, I have applied gold leaf onto a painting and am not happy with some parts of it, is there any way i can remove it or would i be able to paint over it. What is my best option.
Kiasha Daya Hi Kiasha, you won't be able to remove it but you will be able to paint over it will an oil based paint. Give it 2 coats. Make the first one really thin and wait for it to dry totally before you apply the second coat. Joe
Hi Wendy, yes, you can spray the finished artwork with an oil-based varnish. We would recommend an enamel varnish as it has no water in it. Hope this helps! : )
Don't you apply a protective topcoat over the imitation gold leaf? I have heard that copper in that foil becomes green later so it's important to seal it (unless it's real gold)
Iryna Yemelkina Hi Iryna, yes the gold leaf is 86 % Copper and 14% Zinc. And yes some people do apply a topcoat. This will slow down the 'tarnishing' of the leafing over time, unfortunately this can also 'deaden' the finish so it is the lesser of both evils really. The tarnishing of the leaf can also be cleaned with a little lemon juice too. Thanks for the great comment. Joe
...(continue) ...full flight. A cute lion would be great (I know they don't live jungles, but I always think that cute lions give bravery for the day ;-) ) the snake e.g. could be used as a jump coil for something? (hence it ends up looking dazed). Omg, I have so many crazy ideas and I really would appreciate your help.
Haha..I like owls too. I just did a history lesson on Klimt and the tree of life project. The kids always love this one. We use metallic paints however.

Hello, I would like to know if we can paint on the gold leaf. Also this piece turned out very lovely
Hi there, thanks for your question! We wouldn't recommend painting over gold leaf with acrylic but it works reasonably well with oil paints :)

Hi Hilda, I used Mont Marte Leafing size. :)

Can you spray the finished artwork with varnish
Hi Wendy, yes, you can spray the finished artwork with an oil-based varnish. We would recommend an enamel varnish as it has no water in it. Hope this helps! : )
That is totally wicked dude! Thanx a lot
Yo dude, I would suggest using gold paint instead of gold leaf as gold leaf is expensive
What's that glue you used, how is it spelt? 'Size.'
how would you seal your art work can you spray a sealer right overtop your whole painting even on the acrylic paint helppppp

the 18 hundreds are the 19th century, just saying
Hi pilotstyle123, yeah I just watched it. Yeah your right. Thanks for letting us know.
The guy is handsome
Why an owl and not the black bird? The tree is about life and the black bird the symbol of death.
I didn't know that, thanks Karen. I guess i just like owls aye haha

the black bird is a symbol of Odin,, Odin hung himself on such a tree.
er 19th century artist actually!!
Ok
19th and 20th-century artist - not 18th century. Nice video though - thank you.
