how does the fiber at the customer location get converted to copper? where is the power being pulled from to convert data?

Great question. That magic is preformed at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT is connected to a power supply.

@@fiberoptic166 Where is the power supply plugged in? Is it run into the inside of the house and plugged into an outlet?

@@HaulBag we use a power supply that can be placed indoors or outdoors and connect it to a 110 V outlet. Whatever works better.

@@fiberoptic166 Which ONT are you talking about? Modem? Why don't you build it on the modem and have FTTH=fiber to the home directly hooking the modem to the drop? with a nice neat fiber jack on the wall feeding fiber directly to the modem. Just drill and push the drop through. Make fiber end inside of res with the 900m hidden behind a fiber jack than SC connecting the drop with a patch cord to the modem than having everything over IP VOICE/TV don't matter the second I get internet to the prem I automatically have VOICE/TV cuz its all over IP. Also my last question is what's your dbM reading at the prem?

@@ishooal7433 Well, there is no modem. There is no frequency to MOdulate and DEModulate. That is an Adtran Total Access 354E Outdoor Single Family Unit / Single Business Unit. If you were doing a retrofit this is the way it was done. I say was because this is the way we used to do it back in the late 1990s. I worked on one of the first FTTH systems which were not GPON and used AIM over fiber. Those systems were much more sensitive to light levels, backscatter from poor splices and dirty connectors.
The problem with what you are mentioning is if the customer has an alarm and you generate dialtone inside. You have to either backffeed the the alarm on a spare, if there is one and in some cases, drill out and run a wire back to the telco entry point and then connect there.
With systems like this, if a neighbor's fibre got hit, I used to reprogram their number to the nearest house and drop some data lines and some phone lines to keep them up. Repair the fiber and then switch them back.
Now we just force everybody to go with our IP based platform and go full wireless with a cordless phone and sell them a security system that works over cellular..
Because there is no AIM over the fiber the levels can be much lower. AIM on a RFoG PON needs to be 2 to -3 whereas on a GPON you would be more like -14 to -26 db and have no issues.
