- Believe it or not, the Renault Clio is Europe’s second best-selling car behind the Volkswagen Golf. The all-new fifth-generation Clio has a lot to live up to, then, so how will it take the fight to its numerous rivals - cars like the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 2008 - many of which are very good indeed? The answer is with style and technology, says Renault, so does the Clio deliver. Auto Trader’s Road Test Editor Ivan Aistrop goes to Lisbon, Portugal to find out.

The days when VW could be used as a benchmark for interior quality have well and truly gone.

Me too. He is just repeating those tired old cliches about VWs.. Latest Polo looks tired and drab already.

You say it can't match the Polo on the plushness side in terms of materials? Are you serious. The new Polo is just hard plastic everywhere apart from the top of the dash. The Clio has more soft touch surfaces. This is a typical biased journalist thing to say. VW no longer makes interiors that are plush. They've started using more hard plastic than anyone else. They're honestly not as great as all of them say it is inside.

Plush doesn't have to mean soft touch materials.. It just means expensive feeling so that can be down to the tactile buttons with a satisfying click or the feel of the leather. Can mean a variety of things which having owned a vw I believe they still do albeit the difference is not as big as it once was

Rofl, new polo has a better plastic than clio??? Polo je almost 100% hard cheap plastic.

Be a nice car if you could get both the tech pack option and the traffic motorway assist pack .on the rs line but for some reason you can only have one or the other .

I don't know about this model, but the Clio IV would have been better if it had a option to disable ESC mode, instead of removing the thingy on the hood
I’ve driven in both the new Clio (100hp) as the current Polo(95hp). While the Clio does look more luxurious when you sit in it, the Polo feels more luxurious. And then I’m talking about the steering wheel, buttons, the screen etc. The cabin of the Clio is quieter tough.
I'm curious as to where you'd have gotten to drive the new Clio? Or is it already out in showrooms in some countries?
ShroomWalrus it’s already in the showrooms in The Netherlands. Except the Initiale Paris, I was told that it wouldn’t be in the showrooms before week 41.

Quite a decent small car. Spain and Portugal have quite a presence of Clio´s, not to mention France. Renault has a decent after service and warranty plan, better than Hyundai or KIA that may have 7 year warranty but exclude a lot of parts and have very few dealerships.
So when will Australia be getting the Clio 5th gen? I have a 2014 Clio Expression

It's not a review it's literally a "first drive".
The can also hide the car paint inside. I can clearly see it on the door inside.it's like having a VW up or Fiat Panda

All these reviews could only be realistic and somewhat objective if the reviewer could not see the badge of the car or if for example this car came with fake vw badge. Like this however we are presented with prejudices and cliches stuck deep in the mind of the reviewer which are simply not trrue.

I'm sorry but the materials in the clio are better than in the polo, it's got more soft touch materials, even on the door tops which the polo doesn't, i've seen many reviews that confirm that. To me, the Clio 5 has one of the best quality interior of its segment if not the best.
Hate the fact that it's based on megane's chassis and from the front its' almost identical...no signature at all...
Shame on You..... How can You say that the interior of the Polo is better then Clio's... Can You open your eyes for once, and not only repeat what you heard somewhere, from unknown somebody, and use Your head, fingers, earss and nose to make a comment or decision which one is better ..... I'm very disapointed ;o(

rolly polly...?..we want a car like this to be comfortable for everyday driving...most of us aren't racing in corners to need a firm uncomfortable suspension....and btw ...why do english reviewers have such a problem with renault cars and saying it's better than polo interior?
🤦🏻♂️ it doesn't look like a 3-door. the rear door is tremendously obvious which makes it look really weird to have a regular door handle in front but nothing on the back.
Got one of these as hire car at the moment, its like a french van in a car body feel like your sat on it rather than init, gearbox is awfully notchy, rather have a Polo anyday.

Most Americans would scoff at 100hp
not so much new.. just redesigned, and interior stolen from Mazda 2 and Mazda 3
with the 1 L turbo engine it will eat gas like nobody’s business. These small engines when not being driven like somebodys grandma get like 8.8L to 100 km. It’s ridiculous
almost 12 seconds to 100 with 100 hp? those numbers are so 1989!
To all who criticize VW POLO on the quality of its interior. Go check the competition first and then judge. I laugh at the other person below who said that the interior of the new Clio is better than the Polo. Where did he see one? They are not on sale as yet! Who's biased then? Quality on the new Polo is way ahead of its current competitors. I went a year ago when in search of a new supermini, the current Clio is way behind, all plastics, controls, seats feel so cheap I walked away right away, only one close to Polo was the Fiesta and if it had better rear passenger space and boot I would most probably had chosen it instead of the Polo, because the way it drived was way better than anything else. The Seat Ibiza on the other hand also had not quality interior, the materials seemed cheap, it was all hard plastic and even the boot floor it was made as of plain carpet, not well carpeted lid as in the Polo. Polo is the best all rounder, this is not only my opinion after driven and seen the competition but also the opinion of most of the experts. So better be carefull and do your research before voicing your negative opinion about something you only saw on youtbe or on tv.
New Polo is a huge step down from the previous generation one, terms of quality
