The future sister-in-law _never_ intended for OP to be in the wedding. She knew that OP could afford the dress, which could then be passed on to her "new friend" who couldn't afford it. OP should go low-contact with SIL, and also go low-contact with her brother if he's going to support this BS.

NTA. You spent *years* and *thousands of dollars* anticipating being part of the bridal party, and they pulled the rug out from under you last minute, and then had the gall to demand you give them the dress you bought. They're treating you like trash, treat them that way right back and go NC.
A good bride would have picked out a dress that was affordable for everyone. The ones that make their bride's maids pay that much money are the ones that you should avoid because they will disappear in the future. It sounds like the bride in this story conned everyone for two years. No one should pay that much money to be a bride's maid. What did the other bride's maids say about all this?
I love the idea of her having kept the dress and taking it to Miami. That would have been an epic screw you move.

Oh no don’t go to the wedding. They can’t kick you from the bridal party after spending thousands of dollars and not have the dress you paid for because the new person can’t afford it. I would be okay if the couple offered to pay OP for the dress.

With Brothers like that who needs enemies? I would have returned that garment and would have jumped on that flight to Miami with her the second thought and I would have taken that $800 and would have gambled it and party did all the way and I would have take lots of selfies with the friend and post it on their Facebook page right under their wedding. I added a bridesmaid, and to keep it even, I added another groomsman! TAH bride could have done the same and there would be no bad blood.
